1 ¶ Voici les fils d’Israël. Ruben, Siméon, Lévi, Juda, Issacar, Zabulon,
2:1-7:40
Ces généalogies récapitulent la descendance de Jacob/Israël par ses douze fils. La présence de la tribu de Juda en tête de liste souligne son importance, sans aucun doute du fait de l’héritage davidique. Après Juda, c’est Lévi qui reçoit le plus d’attention, et cela reflète l’importance de son rôle sacerdotal. Joseph (#1Ch 2:2) est cité, puis c’est la généalogie de ses fils, Manassé et Éphraïm, qui est donnée. La descendance de Dan et Zabulon n’est pas mentionnée, bien qu’ils soient tous deux comptés dans la répartition territoriale du millénium (selon mon interprétation d’#Ez 48:1-2, #Ez 48:26-27). La raison de ces omissions est inconnue. Benjamin bénéficie d’une attention particulière en #1Ch 8:1-40. Les tribus sont décrites dans l’ordre qui suit:

3 Fils de Juda : Er, Onan, Schéla ; ces trois lui naquirent de la fille de Schua, la Cananéenne. Er, premier-né de Juda, était méchant aux yeux de l’Éternel, qui le fit mourir.
4 Tamar, belle-fille de Juda, lui enfanta Pérets et Zérach. Total des fils de Juda: cinq.
5 Fils de Pérets : Hetsron et Hamul.
6 Fils de Zérach : Zimri, Ethan, Héman, Calcol et Dara. En tout : cinq. —
7 Fils de Carmi : Acar, qui troubla Israël lorsqu’il commit une infidélité au sujet des choses dévouées par interdit. —
8 Fils d’Ethan : Azaria.
9 Fils qui naquirent à Hetsron : Jerachmeel, Ram et Kelubaï.
10 Ram engendra Amminadab. Amminadab engendra Nachschon, prince des fils de Juda.
11 Nachschon engendra Salma. Salma engendra Boaz.
12 Boaz engendra Obed. Obed engendra Isaï.
13 Isaï engendra Éliab, son premier-né, Abinadab le second, Schimea le troisième,
14 Nethaneel le quatrième, Raddaï le cinquième,
15 Otsem le sixième, David le septième.
16 Leurs sœurs étaient : Tseruja et Abigaïl. Fils de Tseruja : Abischaï, Joab et Asaël, trois.
17 Abigaïl enfanta Amasa ; le père d’Amasa fut Jéther, l’Ismaélite.
18 ¶ Caleb, fils de Hetsron, eut des enfants d’Azuba, sa femme, et de Jérioth. Voici les fils qu’il eut d’Azuba : Jéscher, Schobab et Ardon.
19 Azuba mourut ; et Caleb prit Éphrath, qui lui enfanta Hur.
20 Hur engendra Uri, et Uri engendra Betsaleel. —
21 Ensuite, Hetsron alla vers la fille de Makir, père de Galaad, et il avait soixante ans lorsqu’il la prit ; elle lui enfanta Segub.
22 Segub engendra Jaïr, qui eut vingt-trois villes dans le pays de Galaad.
23 Les Gueschuriens et les Syriens leur prirent les bourgs de Jaïr avec Kenath et les villes de son ressort, soixante villes. Tous ceux-là étaient fils de Makir, père de Galaad.
24 Après la mort de Hetsron à Caleb-Éphratha, Abija, femme de Hetsron, lui enfanta Aschchur, père de Tekoa.
25 Les fils de Jerachmeel, premier-né de Hetsron, furent : Ram, le premier-né, Buna, Oren et Otsem, nés d’Achija.
26 Jerachmeel eut une autre femme, nommée Athara, qui fut mère d’Onam. —

31 Fils d’Appaïm : Jischeï. Fils de Jischeï : Schéschan. Fils de Schéschan : Achlaï. —
32 Fils de Jada, frère de Schammaï : Jéther et Jonathan. Jéther mourut sans fils.
33 Fils de Jonathan : Péleth et Zara. — Ce sont là les fils de Jerachmeel. —
34 Schéschan n’eut point de fils, mais il eut des filles. Schéschan avait un esclave égyptien nommé Jarcha.
35 Et Schéschan donna sa fille pour femme à Jarcha, son esclave, à qui elle enfanta Attaï.
36 Attaï engendra Nathan ; Nathan engendra Zabad ;
37 Zabad engendra Éphlal ; Éphlal engendra Obed ;
38 Obed engendra Jéhu ; Jéhu engendra Azaria ;
39 Azaria engendra Halets ; Halets engendra Élasa ;
40 Élasa engendra Sismaï ; Sismaï engendra Schallum ;
41 Schallum engendra Jekamja ; Jekamja engendra Elischama.
42 Fils de Caleb, frère de Jerachmeel : Méscha, son premier-né, qui fut père de Ziph, et les fils de Maréscha, père d’Hébron.
43 Fils d’Hébron : Koré, Thappuach, Rékem et Schéma.
44 Schéma engendra Racham, père de Jorkeam. Rékem engendra Schammaï.
45 Fils de Schammaï : Maon ; et Maon, père de Beth-Tsur.
46 Epha, concubine de Caleb, enfanta Haran, Motsa et Gazez. Haran engendra Gazez.
47 Fils de Jahdaï : Réguem, Jotham, Guéschan, Péleth, Epha et Schaaph.
48 Maaca, concubine de Caleb, enfanta Schéber et Tirchana.
49 Elle enfanta encore Schaaph, père de Madmanna, et Scheva, père de Macbéna et père de Guibea. La fille de Caleb était Acsa.
50 Ceux-ci furent fils de Caleb : Schobal, fils de Hur, premier-né d’Ephrata, et père de Kirjath-Jearim ;
51 Salma, père de Bethléhem ; Hareph, père de Beth-Gader.
52 Les fils de Schobal, père de Kirjath-Jearim, furent : Haroé, Hatsi-Hammenuhoth.
53 Les familles de Kirjath-Jearim furent : les Jéthriens, les Puthiens, les Schumathiens et les Mischraïens ; de ces familles sont sortis les Tsoreathiens et les Eschthaoliens.
54 Fils de Salma : Bethléhem et les Néthophatiens, Athroth-Beth-Joab, Hatsi-Hammanachthi, les Tsoreïens ;
55 et les familles des scribes demeurant à Jaebets, les Thiréathiens, les Schimeathiens et les Sucathiens. Ce sont les Kéniens, issus de Hamath, père de la maison de Récab.

1 ¶ These are the children of Israel. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,

These genealogies recapitulate the descendants of Jacob / Israel by his twelve sons. The presence of the tribe of Judah at the top of the list underlines its importance, no doubt because of the Davidic heritage. After Judah, it is Levi who receives the most attention, and this reflects the importance of his sacerdotal role. Joseph (# 1Ch 2: 2) is quoted, and then the genealogy of his sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, is given. The descent of Dan and Zabulon is not mentioned, although they are both counted in the territorial distribution of the millennium (according to my interpretation of # Ez 48: 1-2, #Ez 48: 26-27). The reason for these omissions is unknown. Benjamin enjoys special attention in # 1Ch 8: 1-40. The tribes are described in the following order:

25 The sons of Jerahmeel, the firstborn of Hezron, were Ram, the firstborn, Buna, Oren, and Otsem, born of Ahijah.

45 The sons of Shammai: Maon; And Maon, father of Beth-Tsur.
46 Ephah, the concubine of Caleb, bore Haran, Motsa, and Gazez. Haran begat Gazez.
7 The sons of Jahdai: Reuem, and Jotham, and Geshan, and Peleth, and Ephah, and Shaaph.
48 Maachah, the concubine of Caleb, bore Sheba and Tirchana.
49 She also bore Shaaph, the father of Madmanna, and Sheva, father of Macbena, and father of Gibeah. Caleb's daughter was Acsa.
50 These were the sons of Caleb: Shobal the son of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrath, and the father of Kiriath-jearim;
51 Salma, the father of Bethlehem; Hareph, father of Beth-Gader.
52 And the sons of Shobal, the father of Kiriath-Jearim, were Haroeh, and Hazi-hammenuhoth.
53 The families of Kiriath-Jearim were: the Jethrians, the Puthians, the Schumathians, and the Mishraites; From these families came the Zorathites and the Eshtaholites.
54 The sons of Salma: Bethlehem and the Nethophathites, Athroth-Beth-Joab, Hatsi-Hammanachthi, and the Zorites;
55 And the families of the scribes dwelling in Jabez, the Thirathites, and the Shimeathites, and the Sukathites. These are the Kenites, the descendants of Hamath, the father of the house of Rechab.
