1 ¶ L’année suivante, au temps où les rois se mettaient en campagne, Joab, à la tête d’une forte armée, alla ravager le pays des fils d’Ammon et assiéger Rabba. Mais David resta à Jérusalem. Joab battit Rabba et la détruisit.
20:1-3
Sous l’influence de l’inspiration divine, l’auteur omit de mentionner ici l’adultère de David avec Bath-Schéba et les péchés qu’il entraîna, alors qu’ils sont liés, en #2S 11:2-12:23, au moment où il resta à Jérusalem au lieu d’aller sur le champ de bataille. Cette omission est probablement due au fait que l’ouvrage vise surtout à démontrer la permanence de l’intérêt de Dieu pour son peuple, Israël, et la perpétuation du royaume davidique.
2 David enleva la couronne de dessus la tête de son roi, et la trouva du poids d’un talent d’or : elle était garnie de pierres précieuses. On la mit sur la tête de David, qui emporta de la ville un très grand butin.
3 Il fit sortir les habitants, et il les mit en pièces avec des scies, des herses de fer et des haches ; il traita de même toutes les villes des fils d’Ammon. David retourna à Jérusalem avec tout le peuple.
4 ¶ Après cela, il y eut une bataille à Guézer avec les Philistins. Alors Sibbecaï, le Huschatite, tua Sippaï, l’un des enfants de Rapha. Et les Philistins furent humiliés.
20:4-8
L’auteur a choisi de ne pas évoquer certains jours sombres du règne de David, en particulier la révolte de son fils Absalom, pour la même raison qu’il a omis de mentionner son péché avec Bath-Schéba.
5 Il y eut encore une bataille avec les Philistins. Et Elchanan, fils de Jaïr, tua le frère de Goliath, Lachmi de Gath, qui avait une lance dont le bois était comme une ensouple de tisserand.
6 Il y eut encore une bataille à Gath. Il s’y trouva un homme de haute taille, qui avait six doigts à chaque main et à chaque pied, vingt-quatre en tout, et qui était aussi issu de Rapha.
7 Il jeta un défi à Israël ; et Jonathan, fils de Schimea, frère de David, le tua.
8 Ces hommes étaient des enfants de Rapha à Gath. Ils périrent par la main de David et par la main de ses serviteurs.

1 ¶ And it came to pass in the following year, that when the kings went out, Joab, at the head of a mighty army, went to ravage the land of the children of Ammon and besiege Rabba. But David remained in Jerusalem. Joab defeated Rabbah and destroyed it.

Under the influence of divine inspiration, the author omitted to mention David's adultery with Bath-Sheba and the sins he caused, while they were bound, in # 2Sa 11: 2-12: 23, when he remained in Jerusalem instead of going to the field of battle. This omission is probably due to the fact that the book is intended primarily to demonstrate the continuing interest of God for his people, Israel, and the perpetuation of the Davidic kingdom.
2 David took the crown from the head of his king, and found it with the weight of a talent of gold: it was garnished with precious stones. And they put it on David's head, and carried away a great spoil from the city.
3 And he brought out the inhabitants, and cut them to pieces with saws, and iron-plates, and axes; He also treated all the cities of the children of Ammon. David returned to Jerusalem with all the people.
4 ¶ After this there was a battle at Gezer with the Philistines. Then Sibbecai, the Huschatite, slew Sippai, one of Rapha's children. And the Philistines were humbled.
20: 4-8
The author chose not to evoke certain dark days of David's reign, especially the revolt of his son Absalom, for the same reason that he failed to mention his sin with Bath-Sheba.
5 And there was a battle with the Philistines. And Elchanan the son of Jair killed Goliath's brother, Lachmi of Gath, who had a spear whose wood was like a weaver's beam.
6 There was another battle in Gath. There was a tall man, with six fingers in each hand and foot, twenty-four in all, and who was also a descendant of Rapha.
7 He challenged Israel; And Jonathan the son of Shimea, David's brother, slew him.
8 These men were children of Rapha at Gath. They perished by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.
