1 ¶ Elie, le Thischbite, l’un des habitants de Galaad, dit à Achab : L’Éternel est vivant, le Dieu d’Israël, dont je suis le serviteur ! il n’y aura ces années-ci ni rosée ni pluie, sinon à ma parole.
Elie. Littéralement « mon Dieu est l’Éternel ». Le ministère du prophète Elie correspondait à son nom: il fut envoyé pour s’opposer au culte de Baal et affirmer à Israël que c’était l’Éternel qui était Dieu, à l’exclusion de tout autre.
Thischbite. Elie vivait dans une ville appelée Thischbé, à l’est du Jourdain, près du torrent de Jabbok.
ni rosée ni pluie. Les pluies d’automne et du printemps et la rosée d’été étaient nécessaires pour les récoltes. L’Éternel avait menacé de les retenir, si son peuple se détournait de lui pour servir d’autres dieux (#Lé 26:18-19 ; #De 11:16-17 ; #De 28:23-24). Elie avait prié dans ce sens (cf. #Ja 5:17), et Dieu l’exauça. La sécheresse dura trois ans et six mois (#Ja 5:17), prouvant l’impuissance de Baal, le dieu de l’orage et de la fertilité, face à l’Éternel.
2 Et la parole de l’Éternel fut adressée à Elie, en ces mots:
3 Pars d’ici, dirige-toi vers l’orient, et cache-toi près du torrent de Kerith, qui est en face du Jourdain.
torrent de Kerith. Situé à l’est du Jourdain, il n’était probablement alimenté en eau que de façon saisonnière.
4 Tu boiras de l’eau du torrent, et j’ai ordonné aux corbeaux de te nourrir là.
5 Il partit et fit selon la parole de l’Éternel, et il alla s’établir près du torrent de Kerith, qui est en face du Jourdain.
6 Les corbeaux lui apportaient du pain et de la viande le matin, et du pain et de la viande le soir, et il buvait de l’eau du torrent.
corbeaux lui apportaient. Cet approvisionnement surnaturel ressemblait beaucoup à l’envoi de la manne et des cailles pendant l’errance d’Israël dans le désert (#Ex 16:13-36).
7 Mais au bout d’un certain temps le torrent fut à sec, car il n’était point tombé de pluie dans le pays.
8 ¶ Alors la parole de l’Éternel lui fut adressée en ces mots:
9 Lève-toi, va à Sarepta, qui appartient à Sidon, et demeure là. Voici, j’y ai ordonné à une femme veuve de te nourrir.
Sarepta. Ville située sur la côte méditerranéenne, à environ 11 km au sud de Sidon. Elie reçut donc l’ordre de séjourner dans un territoire contrôlé par le beau-père d’Achab, Ethbaal. En subvenant miraculeusement aux besoins de cette veuve pendant la famine (vv. #1R 17:10-16), il démontra la puissance de l’Éternel au cœur même d’une région vouée au culte de Baal.
10 Il se leva, et il alla à Sarepta. Comme il arrivait à l’entrée de la ville, voici, il y avait là une femme veuve qui ramassait du bois. Il l’appela, et dit: Va me chercher, je te prie, un peu d’eau dans un vase, afin que je boive.
11 Et elle alla en chercher. Il l’appela de nouveau, et dit : Apporte-moi, je te prie, un morceau de pain dans ta main.
12 Et elle répondit : L’Éternel, ton Dieu, est vivant ! je n’ai rien de cuit, je n’ai qu’une poignée de farine dans un pot et un peu d’huile dans une cruche. Et voici, je ramasse deux morceaux de bois, puis je rentrerai et je préparerai cela pour moi et pour mon fils ; nous mangerons, après quoi nous mourrons.
13 Elie lui dit : Ne crains point, rentre, fais comme tu as dit. Seulement, prépare-moi d’abord avec cela un petit gâteau, et tu me l’apporteras ; tu en feras ensuite pour toi et pour ton fils.
14 Car ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël : La farine qui est dans le pot ne manquera point et l’huile qui est dans la cruche ne diminuera point, jusqu’au jour où l’Éternel fera tomber de la pluie sur la face du sol.
15 Elle alla, et elle fit selon la parole d’Elie. Et pendant longtemps elle eut de quoi manger, elle et sa famille, aussi bien qu’Elie.
16 La farine qui était dans le pot ne manqua point, et l’huile qui était dans la cruche ne diminua point, selon la parole que l’Éternel avait prononcée par Elie.
17 ¶ Après ces choses, le fils de la femme, maîtresse de la maison, devint malade, et sa maladie fut si violente qu’il ne resta plus en lui de respiration.
18 Cette femme dit alors à Elie : Qu’y a-t-il entre moi et toi, homme de Dieu ? Es-tu venu chez moi pour rappeler le souvenir de mon iniquité, et pour faire mourir mon fils ?
19 Il lui répondit : Donne-moi ton fils. Et il le prit du sein de la femme, le monta dans la chambre haute où il demeurait, et le coucha sur son lit.
20 Puis il invoqua l’Éternel, et dit: Éternel, mon Dieu, est-ce que tu affligerais, au point de faire mourir son fils, même cette veuve chez qui j’ai été reçu comme un hôte ?
21 Et il s’étendit trois fois sur l’enfant, invoqua l’Éternel, et dit: Éternel, mon Dieu, je t’en prie, que l’âme de cet enfant revienne au dedans de lui !
22 L’Éternel écouta la voix d’Elie, et l’âme de l’enfant revint au dedans de lui, et il fut rendu à la vie.
23 Elie prit l’enfant, le descendit de la chambre haute dans la maison, et le donna à sa mère. Et Elie dit : Vois, ton fils est vivant.
ton fils est vivant. Les mythes cananéens affirmaient que Baal était capable de ressusciter les morts, mais là ce fut l’Éternel, et non la divinité païenne, qui redonna vie au garçon. Cela prouva de façon concluante qu’il était bien le seul vrai Dieu, et Elie son prophète (v. #1R 17: 24).
24 Et la femme dit à Elie : Je reconnais maintenant que tu es un homme de Dieu, et que la parole de l’Éternel dans ta bouche est vérité.
un homme de Dieu. Un homme de Dieu transmettait les véritables paroles de Dieu.

1 ¶ And Elijah the Tishbite, one of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, The LORD liveth, the God of Israel, whose servant I am. There will be neither dew nor rain these years except to my word.
Elijah. Literally "my God is the Lord." The ministry of the prophet Elijah corresponded to his name: he was sent to oppose the worship of Baal and to assert to Israel that it was the Lord who was God, to the exclusion of all others.
Thischbite. Elijah lived in a city called Thischbe, east of the Jordan, near the torrent of Jabbok.
Neither dew nor rain. Autumn and spring rains and summer dew were necessary for crops. The LORD had threatened to restrain them, if his people turned away from him to serve other gods (Lev. 26: 18-19; # 11: 16-17; # 28: 23-24). Elijah had prayed in this direction (cf. Jn 5:17), and God heard him. The dryness lasted three years and six months (Jn 5:17), proving the impotence of Baal, the god of storm and fertility, before the LORD.
2 And the word of the LORD came to Elijah, saying,
3 Go from thence, and go eastward, and hide thyself by the brook of Kerith, which is before the Jordan.
Torrent of Kerith. Located east of the Jordan River, it was probably watered only seasonally.
4 Thou shalt drink water from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee.
5 And he went and did according to the word of the LORD, and went and stood by the brook of Kerith, which is before the Jordan.
6 The crows brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank water from the torrent.
Crows brought him. This supernatural supply resembled much the sending of manna and quail during the wandering of Israel in the desert (#Ex 16: 13-36).
7 But after a time the river was dry, for there was no rain in the land.
8 ¶ Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying,
9 Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and abide there. Behold, I have commanded a widow woman to feed you.
Sarepta. Town located on the Mediterranean coast, about 11 km south of Sidon. Elie was therefore ordered to stay in a territory controlled by Ahab's father-in-law, Ethbaal. By miraculously supporting the widow's needs during the famine (vv # 1R 17: 10-16), he demonstrated the power of the Lord at the very heart of a region devoted to the worship of Baal.
10 And he arose, and went to Zarephath. As he came to the entrance of the city, behold, there was a widow woman gathering wood. And he called unto him, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
11 And she went in search of it. And he called again, and said, Bring me a piece of bread into your hand, I pray thee.
12 And she said, The LORD thy God is alive. I have nothing cooked, I have only a handful of flour in a pot and a little oil in a pitcher. And behold, I gather two pieces of wood, and then I will go in and prepare it for myself and my son; We shall eat, after which we shall die.
13 And Elijah said unto him, Fear not, return, do as thou hast said. Only prepare a cupcake, and bring it to me; Then you will do it for you and for your son.
14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The flour that is in the jar shall not fail, and the oil that is in the pitcher shall not diminish, until the day when the LORD shall bring down rain On the face of the ground.
15 And she went and did according to the word of Elijah. And for a long time she had enough to eat, she and her family, as well as Elijah.
16 The flour that was in the pot did not fail, and the oil that was in the pitcher did not diminish, according to the word which the LORD had spoken by Elijah.
17 ¶ After these things the son of the woman, the hostess of the house, became sick, and her sickness was so violent that there was no breathing in her.
18 This woman said to Elijah, "What is there between me and you, man of God? Have you come to me to recall the remembrance of my iniquity, and to kill my son?
19 And he said unto him, Give me thy son. And he took him out of the woman's womb, and went up to the upper room where he dwelt, and laid him on his bed.
20 And he called upon the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, would you afflict to the point of killing his son, even that widow with whom I was received as a guest?
21 And he stretched out upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul return within him.
22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child returned within him, and he returned to life.
23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave it to his mother. And Elijah said, See, your son is alive.
Your son is alive. The Canaanite myths asserted that Baal was able to resurrect the dead, but there it was the Lord, not the pagan divinity, that brought the boy back to life. This proved conclusively that he was indeed the only true God, and Elijah his prophet (v. # 1R 17:24).
24 And the woman said unto Elijah, I now know that thou art a man of God, and the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.
A man of God. A man of God transmitted the true words of God.
