1 ¶ Samuel prit une fiole d’huile, qu’il répandit sur la tête de Saül. Il le baisa, et dit : L’Éternel ne t’a-t-il pas oint pour que tu sois le chef de son héritage ?
L’Éternel ne t’a-t-il pas oint … chef? L’Éternel avait choisi Saül comme chef d’Israël, et il communiqua son choix par cette onction, faite en privé par Samuel, qui signifiait la consécration au service de Dieu (voir #1S 2:10).
son héritage. L’héritage de Dieu, c’était son peuple, Israël, dans le sens où il lui appartenait tout particulièrement (#De 4:20 ; #De 9:26).
2 Aujourd’hui, après m’avoir quitté, tu trouveras deux hommes près du sépulcre de Rachel, sur la frontière de Benjamin, à Tseltsach. Ils te diront : Les ânesses que tu es allé chercher sont retrouvées ; et voici, ton père ne pense plus aux ânesses, mais il est en peine de vous, et dit : Que dois-je faire au sujet de mon fils ?
Tseltsach. C’est l’unique mention de cet endroit dans la Bible. Il se situait probablement près de Rama, entre Béthel et Bethléhem, où Rachel mourut (#Ge 35:19 ; #Ge 48:7).
3 De là tu iras plus loin, et tu arriveras au chêne de Thabor, où tu seras rencontré par trois hommes montant vers Dieu à Béthel, et portant l’un trois chevreaux, l’autre trois gâteaux de pain, et l’autre une outre de vin.
Thabor. Il ne s’agit pas du mont Thabor, mais d’un endroit inconnu, certainement près de Béthel.
4 Ils te demanderont comment tu te portes, et ils te donneront deux pains, que tu recevras de leur main.
5 Après cela, tu arriveras à Guibea-Élohim, où se trouve une garnison de Philistins. En entrant dans la ville, tu rencontreras une troupe de prophètes descendant du haut lieu, précédés du luth, du tambourin, de la flûte et de la harpe, et prophétisant eux-mêmes.
une garnison de Philistins. C’était la garnison de Guibea en Benjamin, à environ 8 km au nord de Jérusalem.
prophétisant. En tant que messager de Dieu, le prophète prononçait la parole de l’Éternel (#2S 7:5 ; #2S 12:1), parfois au son des instruments (#1Ch 25:1). Ici, le verbe « prophétiser » est synonyme de louer Dieu et enseigner le peuple avec un accompagnement musical.
6 L’esprit de l’Éternel te saisira, tu prophétiseras avec eux, et tu seras changé en un autre homme.
L’Esprit de l’Éternel te saisira. Le Saint-Esprit rendrait Saül capable de prononcer la parole de l’Éternel avec les prophètes.
changé en un autre homme. Rempli de la puissance du Saint-Esprit, Saül serait transformé (cf. #1S 10:9), équipé à la manière de Gédéon et de Jephthé pour accomplir des actions importantes (cf. v. #1S 10:9 ; #Jug 6:34 ; #Jug 11:29).
7 Lorsque ces signes auront eu pour toi leur accomplissement, fais ce que tu trouveras à faire, car Dieu est avec toi.
ces signes. C’est-à-dire les trois signes des vv. 2-6:
1° l’annonce de la découverte des ânesses;
2° la rencontre avec les trois hommes se rendant à Béthel;
3° la rencontre avec les prophètes.
fais ce que tu trouveras à faire. Saül devait faire ce qu’il pourrait (#Ec 9:10).
8 Puis tu descendras avant moi à Guilgal ; et voici, je descendrai vers toi, pour offrir des holocaustes et des sacrifices d’actions de grâces. Tu attendras sept jours, jusqu’à ce que j’arrive auprès de toi et que je te dise ce que tu dois faire.
Guilgal. La ville où Saül serait finalement déclaré roi (#1S 11:14-15), où il offrirait un sacrifice à l’Éternel en l’absence de Samuel (#1S 13: 12) et où ce dernier tuerait le roi Agag (#1S 15: 33). Guilgal se trouvait à l’est de Jéricho sur la rive occidentale du Jourdain.
sept jours. Saül devait attendre que Samuel vienne pour lui dire ce qu’il devait faire (cf. #1S 13: 8).
9 ¶ Dès que Saül eut tourné le dos pour se séparer de Samuel, Dieu lui donna un autre cœur, et tous ces signes s’accomplirent le même jour.
Dieu lui donna un autre cœur. Littéralement « Dieu lui retourna le cœur (en un) autre », c’est-à-dire que Dieu le prépara à exercer la royauté en le revêtant du Saint-Esprit (cf. v. #1S 10:6).
10 Lorsqu’ils arrivèrent à Guibea, voici, une troupe de prophètes vint à sa rencontre. L’esprit de Dieu le saisit, et il prophétisa au milieu d’eux.
11 Tous ceux qui l’avaient connu auparavant virent qu’il prophétisait avec les prophètes, et l’on se disait l’un à l’autre dans le peuple : Qu’est-il arrivé au fils de Kis ? Saül est-il aussi parmi les prophètes ?
12 Quelqu’un de Guibea répondit : Et qui est leur père ? — De là le proverbe : Saül est-il aussi parmi les prophètes ?
qui est leur père? Ils voulaient découvrir l’identité du chef de la troupe prophétique dont Saül faisait désormais partie.
proverbe. C’est-à-dire un dicton populaire.
13 Lorsqu’il eut fini de prophétiser, il se rendit au haut lieu.
14 L’oncle de Saül dit à Saül et à son serviteur : Où êtes-vous allés ? Saül répondit : Chercher les ânesses ; mais nous ne les avons pas aperçues, et nous sommes allés vers Samuel.
15 L’oncle de Saül reprit : Raconte-moi donc ce que vous a dit Samuel.
16 Et Saül répondit à son oncle : Il nous a assuré que les ânesses étaient retrouvées. Et il ne lui dit rien de la royauté dont avait parlé Samuel.
de la royauté. Ce silence de Saül à propos des informations que lui avait données Samuel concernant son futur rôle de roi était peut-être un signe de son humilité (cf. v. #1S 10:22).
17 ¶ Samuel convoqua le peuple devant l’Éternel à Mitspa,
Samuel convoqua le peuple. Le choix de Saül par l’Éternel fut rendu public à Mitspa, lieu du renouveau spirituel avant la victoire d’Israël sur les Philistins (#1S 7:5-8).
18 et il dit aux enfants d’Israël : Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël : J’ai fait monter d’Égypte Israël, et je vous ai délivrés de la main des Égyptiens et de la main de tous les royaumes qui vous opprimaient.

le Dieu d’Israël … vous a délivrés. Malgré la fidélité continuelle dont Dieu avait fait preuve envers eux, les Israélites désiraient un roi humain pour être délivrés de la main de leurs ennemis.
19 Et aujourd’hui, vous rejetez votre Dieu, qui vous a délivrés de tous vos maux et de toutes vos souffrances, et vous lui dites : Établis un roi sur nous ! Présentez-vous maintenant devant l’Éternel, selon vos tribus et selon vos milliers.
20 Samuel fit approcher toutes les tribus d’Israël, et la tribu de Benjamin fut désignée.

désignée … désigné. Cette désignation intervint probablement par le biais d’un tirage au sort (cf. #Lé 16:8-10 ; #Jos 7:15-18).
21 Il fit approcher la tribu de Benjamin par familles, et la famille de Matri fut désignée. Puis Saül, fils de Kis, fut désigné. On le chercha, mais on ne le trouva point.
22 On consulta de nouveau l’Éternel : Y a-t-il encore un homme qui soit venu ici ? Et l’Éternel dit : Voici, il est caché vers les bagages.
caché vers les bagages. Troublé, Saül s’était caché parmi le matériel militaire.
23 On courut le tirer de là, et il se présenta au milieu du peuple. Il les dépassait tous de la tête.
dépassait tous de la tête. La taille de Saül était impressionnante, et cette supériorité physique sur ses compatriotes lui donnait une prestance toute royale.
24 Samuel dit à tout le peuple : Voyez-vous celui que l’Éternel a choisi ? Il n’y a personne dans tout le peuple qui soit semblable à lui. Et tout le peuple poussa les cris de : Vive le roi !
25 Samuel fit alors connaître au peuple le droit de la royauté, et il l’écrivit dans un livre, qu’il déposa devant l’Éternel. Puis il renvoya tout le peuple, chacun chez soi.
le droit de la royauté. Samuel rappela au peuple les règles relatives à la conduite des rois selon #De 17:14-20.
26 Saül aussi s’en alla dans sa maison à Guibea. Il fut accompagné par les honnêtes gens, dont Dieu avait touché le cœur.
dont Dieu avait touché le cœur. Ces hommes furent poussés par Dieu à se joindre à Saül, désireux qu’ils étaient de confirmer le choix divin.
27 Il y eut toutefois des hommes pervers, qui disaient : Quoi ! c’est celui-ci qui nous sauvera ! Et ils le méprisèrent, et ne lui apportèrent aucun présent. Mais Saül n’y prit point garde.
des hommes pervers. Littéralement « des fils de Bélial ». Ceux-là ne montrèrent pas à Saül le respect dû à un roi.

1 ¶ Then Samuel took a vial of oil and poured it on Saul's head. Kissed him, and said, The LORD hath he not anointed you to be prince over his inheritance?
The LORD hath he anointed leader ...? The Lord chose Saul as leader of Israel, and he communicated his choice by this anointing, made privately by Samuel, which meant the consecration to the service of God (see # 1S 2:10).
his legacy. The legacy of God, it was his people, Israel, in the sense that it belonged to him especially (# of 4:20; # of 9:26).
2 Today, after leaving me, you will find two men near Rachel's tomb, in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah. They will tell you, The asses which you went to seek are found; and behold, your father does not think the asses, but is anxious for you, saying, What shall I do about my son?
Zelzah. This is the only mention of this place in the Bible. It probably was near Ramah, between Bethel and Bethlehem, where Rachel died (#Ge 35:19; #Ge 48: 7).
3 From here you will go away, and come to the oak of Tabor, where you will be met by three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another three loaves of bread, and the other a of wine.
Tabor. This is not Mount Tabor, but an unknown location, probably near Bethel.
4 They will ask you how you doors, and they will give you two loaves, which thou shalt receive of their hand.
5 After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines. On entering the city, you will meet a descendant company of prophets from the high place with a psaltery, tambourine, flute and harp, and prophesying themselves.
a garrison of the Philistines. It was the garrison of Gibeah in Benjamin, about 8 km north of Jerusalem.
prophesying. As a messenger of God, the Prophet pronounced the word of the Lord (# 2S 7: 5; 2S # 12: 1), sometimes the sound of instruments (# 1Ch 25: 1). Here the verb "prophesy" is synonymous with praise God and teach the people with musical accompaniment.
6 The spirit of the Lord will come upon you, you will prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
The Spirit of the Lord will come. The Holy Spirit would make Saul able to pronounce the word of the Lord with the prophets.
turned into another man. Filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, Saul would be transformed (see # 1S 10: 9), with the manner of Gideon and Jephthah to perform important actions (cf. v # 1S. 10: 9; 6 #Jug : 34; #Jug 11:29).
7 When these signs come to you their accomplishment, do what thou do, for God is with you.
these signs. That is to say, the three signs of vv. 2-6:
1. The announcement of the discovery of the asses,
2 meeting with the three men visiting Bethel;
3rd meeting with the prophets.
do what thou do. Saul had to do what he could (#EC 9:10).
8 And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I come down to you to offer burnt offerings and peace offerings. You shall wait seven days until I come to you and I tell you what you must do.
Gilgal. The city where Saul would finally declared king (# 1S 11: 14-15), where he would offer a sacrifice to the Lord in the absence of Samuel (# 1S 13: 12) and that the latter would kill the king Agag (# 1S 15: 33). Gilgal was east of Jericho on the West Bank.
seven days. Saul had to wait for Samuel to come to tell him what to do (see # 1S 13: 8).
¶ 9 As soon as he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart, and all those signs came to pass that day.
God gave him another heart. Literally "God returned the heart (one) other", that is to say, God prepared him to exercise kingship by coating the Holy Spirit (cf. v # 1S. 10: 6).
10 When they came to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him. The spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
11 And all who knew him before saw how he prophesied with the prophets, and we said to each other in the people: What happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
12 man of the place answered, Who is their father? - Hence the proverb: Is Saul also among the prophets?
who is their father? They wanted to discover the identity of the head of the troupe whose prophetic Saul was now a part.
proverb. That is to say, a popular saying.
13 When he had finished prophesying, he came to the high place.
14 Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Where did you go? Saul said, To seek the asses; but we have not spotted them, and we went to Samuel.
15 Saul's uncle said, Tell me what Samuel said to you.
16 And Saul said to his uncle, He told us that the asses were found. And he said nothing of royalty which Samuel had spoken.
of royalty. This silence Saul about the information given to him by Samuel about his future role as king was perhaps a sign of humility (cf. v. # 1S 10:22).
17 ¶ Samuel called the people to the LORD at Mizpah;
Samuel called the people. The choice of Saul the LORD was made public at Mizpah place of spiritual renewal before Israel's victory over the Philistines (# 1S 7: 5-8).
18 and said to the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel: I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all the kingdoms that oppressed you.

the God of Israel ... has delivered you. Despite the continued loyalty of which God had shown to them, the Israelites wanted a human king to be delivered from the hand of their enemies.
19 And today rejected your God, who saves you from all your adversities and all your sufferings, and you say, set a king over us! Introduce yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.
20 Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken.

... designated appointed. This designation probably intervened through a random draw (see # Lev 16: 8-10; #Jos 7: 15-18).
21 He brought the tribe of Benjamin by families, and the family of Matri was taken. And Saul the son of Kish was. they sought him, but found him not.
22 Therefore they inquired of the LORD: Are there still a man come here? And the LORD said, Behold, he is hiding among the baggage.
hidden among the baggage. Troubled, Saul was hiding among the military equipment.
23 We ran and fetched him there, and he stood among the people. It exceeded all of the head.
exceeded all of the head. The size of Saul was impressive, and this physical superiority over his countrymen gave him a right royal presence.
24 Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD has chosen? There is no one in all the people fit for him. And all the people shouted, Long live the king!
25 Then Samuel told the people the law of royalty, and wrote it in a book, and laid before the LORD. Then he sent all the people away, every man.
the right of kingship. Samuel reminded the people the rules on the conduct of kings as # of 17: 14-20.
26 Saul also went home to Gibeah. He was accompanied by honest people, whose heart God had touched.
whose heart God had touched. These men were moved by God to join Saul eager they were to confirm the divine choice.
27 But the children of Belial, saying: What! it is this that will save us! And they despised him, and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
wicked men. Literally "son of Belial." Those did not show Saul the respect due to a king.
