1 SAMUEL 3 : 1 à 21*** +
1 ¶ Le jeune Samuel était au service de l’Éternel devant Eli. La parole de l’Éternel était rare en ce temps-là, les visions n’étaient pas fréquentes.
Le jeune Samuel. Samuel n’était plus un enfant, il était certainement entré dans l’adolescence (#1S 2:21, #1S 2:26). L’historien juif Flavius Josèphe estime qu’il devait avoir 12 ans. Le même terme hébreu décrit David lors de son combat contre Goliath (#1S 17: 33).
La parole de l’Éternel était rare. L’époque des juges fut une période au cours de laquelle l’activité prophétique fut extrêmement limitée, tout comme les visions accordées par Dieu.
visions. C’est-à-dire des révélations divines transmises par le biais d’un contact d’ordre auditif ou visuel.
2 En ce même temps, Eli, qui commençait à avoir les yeux troubles et ne pouvait plus voir, était couché à sa place,
3 la lampe de Dieu n’était pas encore éteinte, et Samuel était couché dans le temple de l’Éternel, où était l’arche de Dieu.
la lampe de Dieu n’était pas encore éteinte. Le chandelier d’or, dans le lieu saint du tabernacle, était rempli d’huile d’olives et allumé au crépuscule (#Ex 30:8). Il devait brûler du soir au matin (#Ex 27:20-21). C’est donc juste avant l’aube que Samuel fut appelé au ministère prophétique.

4 Alors l’Éternel appela Samuel. Il répondit : Me voici !
5 Et il courut vers Eli, et dit : Me voici, car tu m’as appelé. Eli répondit : Je n’ai point appelé ; retourne te coucher. Et il alla se coucher.
6 L’Éternel appela de nouveau Samuel. Et Samuel se leva, alla vers Eli, et dit : Me voici, car tu m’as appelé. Eli répondit : Je n’ai point appelé, mon fils, retourne te coucher.
7 Samuel ne connaissait pas encore l’Éternel, et la parole de l’Éternel ne lui avait pas encore été révélée.
Samuel ne connaissait pas encore l’Éternel. Il n’avait pas encore rencontré personnellement le Seigneur et n’avait pas encore reçu la parole de Dieu par une révélation divine (voir #1S 2:12).
8 L’Éternel appela de nouveau Samuel, pour la troisième fois. Et Samuel se leva, alla vers Eli, et dit : Me voici, car tu m’as appelé. Eli comprit que c’était l’Éternel qui appelait l’enfant,
Eli comprit. La lenteur d’Eli à reconnaître que Dieu appelait Samuel montre que son discernement spirituel n’était pas digne d’un homme qui occupait la fonction de sacrificateur et de juge en Israël (voir aussi 1:12-16).
9 et il dit à Samuel : Va, couche-toi ; et si l’on t’appelle, tu diras : Parle, Éternel, car ton serviteur écoute. Et Samuel alla se coucher à sa place.
10 L’Éternel vint et se présenta, et il appela comme les autres fois : Samuel, Samuel ! Et Samuel répondit : Parle, car ton serviteur écoute.
écoute. Il s’agissait d’une écoute attentive, avec l’intention d’obéir.
11 ¶ Alors l’Éternel dit à Samuel : Voici, je vais faire en Israël une chose qui étourdira les oreilles de quiconque l’entendra.
étourdira les oreilles. Cette expression annonçait un message de destruction imminente, ici concernant la famille d’Eli (cf. #2R 21: 12 ; #Jér 19: 3).
12 En ce jour j’accomplirai sur Eli tout ce que j’ai prononcé contre sa maison ; je commencerai et j’achèverai.
tout ce que j’ai prononcé. Voir #1S 2:27-36. La répétition de cet oracle par Samuel confirmait les propos tenus par l’homme de Dieu.
13 Je lui ai déclaré que je veux punir sa maison à perpétuité, à cause du crime dont il a connaissance, et par lequel ses fils se sont rendus méprisables, sans qu’il les ait réprimés.
se sont rendus méprisables. La LXX porte « ont dit du mal de Dieu », offense qui méritait la mort (cf. #Lé 24:11-16, #Lé 24: 23).
sans qu’il les ait réprimés. Eli s’était fait le complice des péchés de ses fils en n’intervenant pas pour les sanctionner. S’ils blasphémaient contre Dieu, ils devaient être lapidés (cf. #Lé 24:15-16).
14 C’est pourquoi je jure à la maison d’Eli que jamais le crime de la maison d’Eli ne sera expié, ni par des sacrifices ni par des offrandes.
jamais … ne sera expié. La famille d’Eli s’était apparemment rendue coupable d’arrogance dans son péché. Il n’y avait aucune expiation pour un péché délibéré, et la peine de mort pouvait être infligée immédiatement (voir #No 15:30-31).
15 Samuel resta couché jusqu’au matin, puis il ouvrit les portes de la maison de l’Éternel. Samuel craignait de raconter la vision à Eli.

16 Mais Eli appela Samuel, et dit : Samuel, mon fils ! Il répondit : Me voici !
17 Et Eli dit : Quelle est la parole que t’a adressée l’Éternel ? Ne me cache rien. Que Dieu te traite dans toute sa rigueur, si tu me caches quelque chose de tout ce qu’il t’a dit !
Que Dieu te traite dans toute sa rigueur. C’était un serment d’imprécation par lequel Eli appelait le jugement de Dieu sur Samuel s’il refusait de dire tout ce qu’il savait.
18 Samuel lui raconta tout, sans lui rien cacher. Et Eli dit : C’est l’Éternel, qu’il fasse ce qui lui semblera bon !

19 ¶ Samuel grandissait. L’Éternel était avec lui, et il ne laissa tomber à terre aucune de ses paroles.
L’Éternel était avec lui. L’Éternel était aux côtés de Samuel comme il serait plus tard avec David (#1S 16: 18 ; #1S 18: 12). Par sa présence, il confirmait le choix qu’il avait fait d’un homme pour son service.

20 Tout Israël, depuis Dan jusqu’à Beer-Schéba, reconnut que Samuel était établi prophète de l’Éternel.

21 L’Éternel continuait à apparaître dans Silo ; car l’Éternel se révélait à Samuel, dans Silo, par la parole de l’Éternel.

1 ¶ The young Samuel was serving the LORD before Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days, visions were infrequent.
The young Samuel. Samuel was not a child, he was certainly entered adolescence (# 1S 2:21, 2:26 # 1S). The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus believes it would be 12 years old. The same Hebrew term describes David in his fight against Goliath (# 1S 17: 33).
The word of the LORD was rare. The era of the judges was a period during which the prophetic activity was extremely limited, as the visions granted by God.
visions. That is to say, divine revelations transmitted through contact with an auditory or visual order.
2 At that time Eli, who began to have troubles eyes and could not see, was lying in his place,
3 The lamp of God was not yet extinguished, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God.
the lamp of God was not yet extinguished. The candlestick, the holy place of the tabernacle was filled with olive oil and lit at dusk (#Ex 30: 8). He had to burn from evening to morning (#Ex 27: 20-21). It is just before dawn Samuel was called to the prophetic ministry.

4 Then the LORD called Samuel. He answered: Here I am!
5 And he ran to Eli and said, Here I am, for you called me. Eli answered, I did not call; lie down again. And he went to bed.
6 The LORD called Samuel again. And Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, Here I am, for you called me. Eli answered, I did not call, my son; lie down again.
7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.
Samuel did not yet know the Lord. He had not personally met the Lord and had not yet received the word of God through divine revelation (see # 1S 2:12).
8 The LORD called Samuel again the third time. And Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, Here I am, for you called me. Eli realized it was the Lord who was calling the child,
Eli understood. Eli slow to recognize that God called Samuel shows his spiritual discernment was not worthy of a man who held the position of priest and judge in Israel (see 1: 12-16).
9 and he said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if he calls you, say: Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth. Samuel went and lay down in his place.
10 The LORD came and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel! Samuel answered, Speak, for your servant is listening.
listening. It was a listening with the intent to obey.
11 ¶ Then the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do something in Israel which both the ears of everyone who hears.
both the ears. This expression announced an imminent destruction of message here regarding the family of Eli (see # 2R 21: 12; # Jer 19: 3).
12 In that day I will perform against Eli everything I spoke against his house; I beginning to end.
everything I made. See # 1S 2: 27-36. The repetition of this oracle Samuel confirmed by the words of the man of God.
13 I told him that I will judge his house forever, for the iniquity which he has knowledge, and which his son made themselves vile, but he restrained them.
made themselves vile. The LXX door "have spoken ill of God" offense that deserved death (cf. # Lev 24: 11-16, # Lev 24: 23).
without he restrained them. Eli was an accomplice of the sins of his son by not intervening to punish. If they blasphemed against God, they were to be stoned (see # Lev 24: 15-16).
14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be expiated by either sacrifice or offering.
never ... shall not be expiated. The family of Eli had apparently been guilty of arrogance in his sin. There was no atonement for a deliberate sin, the death penalty could be imposed immediately (see #No 15: 30-31).
15 Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli.
the doors of the house of the Lord. That is to say, the doors of the courtyard of the tabernacle (see # 1S 1: 9).
16 But Eli called Samuel and said, Samuel, my son! He answered: Here I am!
17 And he said: What is the thing that hath the LORD addressed? Hide nothing from me. God make thee in all its rigor, if you hiding something from everything he told you!
God make thee in all its rigor. It was an oath of imprecation by which Eli called God's judgment on Samuel if he refused to tell all he knew.
18 Samuel told him everything, without him hiding anything. And he said, It is the Lord, let him do what seems good to him!
let him do what seems good to him! Eli submitted without any reluctance to divine sovereignty.
19 ¶ And Samuel grew. The Lord was with him, and he let fall any of his words.
The Lord was with him. The Lord was with Samuel sides as it would be later with David (# 1S 16: 18; # 1S 18: 12). By his presence, he confirmed the choice he had made of a man for his service.
not let fall any of his words. Everything Samuel said with divine authorization was accomplished, and it showed that he was a true prophet of God (cf. # of 18: 21-22).
20 All Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was a prophet of the LORD.

prophet of the LORD. The spokesman of God status was recognized by all the Israelites Samuel.
21 And the Lord appeared again in Shiloh; for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
