1 ¶  Il fit un autel d’airain, long de vingt coudées, large de vingt coudées, et haut de dix coudées.

C’était l’autel principal sur lequel on offrait des sacrifices (cf. l’autel du temple du millénium; #Ez 43:13-17). Pour comparer avec l’autel du tabernacle, voir #Ex 27:1-8 ; #Ex 38:1-7. L’autel mesurait environ 10 m sur 10, et 5 m de haut.

2  Il fit la mer de fonte. Elle avait dix coudées d’un bord à l’autre, une forme entièrement ronde, cinq coudées de hauteur, et une circonférence que mesurait un cordon de trente coudées.

la mer. Ce grand bassin était utilisé pour les purifications rituelles (cf. #Ex 30:17-21 en lien avec le tabernacle). Dans le millénium, il sera apparemment remplacé par l’eau qui jaillira du temple (#Ez 47:1-12).

3  Des figures de bœufs l’entouraient au-dessous de son bord, dix par coudée, faisant tout le tour de la mer ; les bœufs, disposés sur deux rangs, étaient fondus avec elle en une seule pièce.

bœufs. #1R 7:24 parle de « coloquintes », ce qui est plus probable. Elles faisaient le tour du bassin, lui-même posé sur douze bœufs.

4  Elle était posée sur douze bœufs, dont trois tournés vers le nord, trois tournés vers l’occident, trois tournés vers le midi, et trois tournés vers l’orient ; la mer était sur eux, et toute la partie postérieure de leur corps était en dedans.

douze bœufs. Ils représentaient les douze tribus, elles aussi disposées tout autour du tabernacle avant les marches dans le désert (cf. #No 2:1-34).

5  Son épaisseur était d’un palme ; et son bord, semblable au bord d’une coupe, était façonné en fleur de lis. Elle pouvait contenir trois mille baths.

trois mille baths. Environ 105 000 litres, ce qui entraîne une différence avec les « deux mille baths » de #1R 7:26. Ici, on tient compte non seulement de la contenance du bassin, mais aussi de la quantité d’eau nécessaire pour qu’il y ait un écoulement constant, à l’instar d’une fontaine.

6  Il fit dix bassins, et il en plaça cinq à droite et cinq à gauche, pour qu’ils servissent aux purifications : on y lavait les diverses parties des holocaustes. La mer était destinée aux ablutions des sacrificateurs.

7  Il fit dix chandeliers d’or, selon l’ordonnance qui les concernait, et il les plaça dans le temple, cinq à droite et cinq à gauche.

4:7-8

dix chandeliers …  dix tables. Il y avait seulement un chandelier et une table dans le tabernacle. Dans le temple, tout était plus grand, car des milliers de personnes devaient y venir chaque jour, ainsi que lors des fêtes.

8  Il fit dix tables, et il les plaça dans le temple, cinq à droite et cinq à gauche. Il fit cent coupes d’or.

9  Il fit le parvis des sacrificateurs, et le grand parvis avec ses portes, dont il couvrit d’airain les battants.

10  Il plaça la mer du côté droit, au sud-est.

11 ¶  Huram fit les cendriers, les pelles et les coupes. Ainsi Huram acheva l’ouvrage que le roi Salomon lui fit faire pour la maison de Dieu:

Tous ces détails soulignaient la grande attention portée au culte, mais ils servaient aussi de manuel aux Juifs de retour de Babylone pour construire un nouveau temple sous l’égide de Zorobabel.

Huram. Cet artisan dirigea les travaux, sous les ordres de Salomon.

12  deux colonnes, avec les deux chapiteaux et leurs bourrelets sur le sommet des colonnes ; les deux treillis, pour couvrir les deux bourrelets des chapiteaux sur le sommet des colonnes ;

13  les quatre cents grenades pour les deux treillis, deux rangées de grenades par treillis, pour couvrir les deux bourrelets des chapiteaux sur le sommet des colonnes ;

14  les dix bases, et les dix bassins sur les bases ;

15  la mer, et les douze bœufs sous elle ;

16  les cendriers, les pelles et les fourchettes. Tous ces ustensiles que le roi Salomon fit faire à Huram-Abi pour la maison de l’Éternel étaient d’airain poli.

17  Le roi les fit fondre dans la plaine du Jourdain, dans un sol argileux, entre Succoth et Tseréda.

18  Salomon fit tous ces ustensiles en si grande quantité que l’on ne vérifia pas le poids de l’airain.

19  Salomon fit encore tous les autres ustensiles pour la maison de Dieu : l’autel d’or ; les tables sur lesquelles on mettait les pains de proposition ;

20  les chandeliers et leurs lampes d’or pur, qu’on devait allumer selon l’ordonnance devant le sanctuaire,

21  les fleurs, les lampes et les mouchettes d’or, d’or très pur ;

22  les couteaux, les coupes, les tasses et les brasiers d’or pur ; et les battants d’or pour la porte de l’intérieur de la maison à l’entrée du lieu très saint, et pour la porte de la maison à l’entrée du temple.

It was the main altar on which sacrifices were offered (cf. the altar of the temple of the millennium, Ezekiel 43: 13-17). To compare with the altar of the tabernacle, see #Ex 27: 1-8; #Ex 38: 1-7. The altar measured about 10 m by 10 m, and 5 m high.

2 He made the molten sea. It had ten cubits from one side to the other, a round shape, five cubits in height, and a circumference measured by a line of thirty cubits.

The sea. This great basin was used for ritual purifications (see # 30: 17-21 in connection with the tabernacle). In the millennium, it will apparently be replaced by the water that will spring from the temple (#Ez 47: 1-12).

3 Numbers of oxen surrounded him beneath his brim, ten cubits, and made all the way round the sea; The oxen, arranged in two rows, were melted with it in one piece.

Oxen. # 1R 7:24 talks about "colocrossed", which is more likely. They made the round of the basin, itself laid on twelve oxen.

4 And it stood upon twelve oxen, three of them turned northward, three facing westward, three facing southward, and three facing eastward. The sea was upon them, and all the posterior part of their body was within.

Twelve oxen. They represented the twelve tribes, which were also arranged around the tabernacle before the steps in the desert (cf. # 2: 1-34).

5 His thickness was of a palm; And its edge, like the edge of a cup, was shaped like a fleur-de-lis. It could hold three thousand baths.

Three thousand baths. Approximately 105,000 liters, which results in a difference with the "two thousand baths" of # 1R 7:26. Here, account is taken not only of the capacity of the basin, but also of the quantity of water necessary for there to be a constant flow, like a fountain.

6 And he made ten ponds, and set five on the right hand, and five on the left, that they might be used for cleansing: the different parts of the burnt-offering were washed there. The sea was destined for the ablution of the priests.

Ten basins. Elements without correspondence in the tabernacle.

7 And he made ten candlesticks of gold, according to the ordinance concerning them, and set them in the temple, five on the right and five on the left.

Ten candlesticks, ten tables. There was only a candlestick and a table in the tabernacle. In the temple everything was bigger, because thousands of people had to come there every day, as well as during the holidays.

8 He made ten tables, and placed them in the temple, five on the right and five on the left. He made a hundred cups of gold.

9 And he made the court of the priests, and the great court with his gates, and covered the doors with brass.

10 He placed the sea on the right side, to the south-east.

11 Huram made the ashtrays, the shovels and the cups. Thus Huram finished the work which King Solomon made him do for the house of God:

All these details emphasized the great attention paid to worship, but they also served as a manual for the Jews returning from Babylon to build a new temple under the aegis of Zorobabel.

Huram. This artisan led the work under the orders of Solomon.

12 two pillars, with the two capitals, and their ribs on the top of the pillars; The two trellises, to cover the two beads of the capitals on the top of the columns;

13 the four hundred pomegranates for the two trellises, two rows of pomegranates per trellis, to cover the two bulges of the capitals on the top of the pillars;

14 the ten bases, and the ten basins on the bases;

15 the sea, and the twelve oxen beneath it;

16 ashtrays, shovels and forks. All these utensils that King Solomon sent to Huram-Abi for the house of the Lord were of polished brass.

17 And the king melt them in the plain of the Jordan, in a clay soil, between Succoth and Zereda.

18 And Solomon made all these vessels in such great quantities that they did not verify the weight of the brass.

19 And Solomon made all the other vessels for the house of God: the golden altar; The tables on which the loaves of offer were put;

20 the candlesticks and their lamps of pure gold, which were to be kindled according to the ordinance before the sanctuary,

21 The flowers, the lamps, and the golden flies, of pure gold;

22 the knives, the cups, the cups, and the burners of pure gold; And the doors of gold for the door of the interior of the house at the entrance of the most holy place, and for the door of the house at the entrance of the temple.
