1 ¶ Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car tout Israël était venu à Sichem pour le faire roi.
10:1-36:21
Cette section mentionne les vingt rois qui se sont assis sur le trône de Juda après le schisme, depuis Roboam, le fils de Salomon (vers 931 av. J.-C.), jusqu’à Sédécias (vers 586 av. J.-C.), souverain en exercice lors de la déportation à Babylone. Elle présente aussi bien les rois justes et leurs réformes que les mauvais rois et leur influence désastreuse. Le royaume du nord n’entre pas en ligne de compte, puisque les Chroniques se concentrent sur la lignée davidique.

10:1-11:4
Roboam écouta les conseils stupides et mauvais de novices au lieu de suivre les bons conseils d’hommes sages et expérimentés, ce qui provoqua la division en Israël. Étonnamment, malgré toute la force qui avait caractérisé le règne de Salomon, l’union entre les tribus était restée très fragile, et la prise de pouvoir par un insensé suffit pour y mettre fin. Roboam chercha à réunir le peuple par la force, mais Dieu ne le lui permit pas (#2Ch 11:1-4).
2 Lorsque Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, eut des nouvelles, il était en Égypte, où il s’était enfui loin du roi Salomon, et il revint d’Égypte.
Jéroboam. Il deviendrait le premier roi du royaume du nord, Israël (av. J.-C.). Voir l’histoire de son retour d’Égypte en #1R 11:26-40.
3 On l’envoya appeler. Alors Jéroboam et tout Israël vinrent vers Roboam et lui parlèrent ainsi:
4 Ton père a rendu notre joug dur ; maintenant allège cette rude servitude et le joug pesant que nous a imposé ton père. Et nous te servirons.
5 Il leur dit : Revenez vers moi dans trois jours. Et le peuple s’en alla.
6 Le roi Roboam consulta les vieillards qui avaient été auprès de Salomon, son père, pendant sa vie, et il dit : Que conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple ?
7 Et voici ce qu’ils lui dirent : Si tu es bon envers ce peuple, si tu les reçois favorablement, et si tu leur parles avec bienveillance, ils seront pour toujours tes serviteurs.
8 Mais Roboam laissa le conseil que lui donnaient les vieillards, et il consulta les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui et qui l’entouraient.
9 Il leur dit : Que conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple qui me tient ce langage : Allège le joug que nous a imposé ton père ?
10 Et voici ce que lui dirent les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui : Tu parleras ainsi à ce peuple qui t’a tenu ce langage : Ton père a rendu notre joug pesant, et toi, allège-le-nous ! tu leur parleras ainsi : Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père.
11 Maintenant, mon père vous a chargés d’un joug pesant, et moi je vous le rendrai plus pesant ; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, et moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.
12 ¶ Jéroboam et tout le peuple vinrent à Roboam le troisième jour, suivant ce qu’avait dit le roi : Revenez vers moi dans trois jours.
13 Le roi leur répondit durement. Le roi Roboam laissa le conseil des vieillards,
14 et leur parla ainsi d’après le conseil des jeunes gens : Mon père a rendu votre joug pesant, et moi je le rendrai plus pesant ; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, et moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.
15 Ainsi le roi n’écouta point le peuple ; car cela fut dirigé par Dieu, en vue de l’accomplissement de la parole que l’Éternel avait dite par Achija de Silo à Jéroboam, fils de Nebath.
16 Lorsque tout Israël vit que le roi ne l’écoutait pas, le peuple répondit au roi : Quelle part avons-nous avec David ? Nous n’avons point d’héritage avec le fils d’Isaï ! À tes tentes, Israël ! Maintenant, pourvois à ta maison, David ! Et tout Israël s’en alla dans ses tentes.
10:16-19
Ces vv. relatent le début du schisme. Dix tribus suivirent Jéroboam et furent désormais appelées Israël. Les deux autres tribus, Benjamin et Juda, restant loyales à la famille de David, se soumirent à l’autorité de Roboam et furent appelées Juda. Cependant, la loyauté de Benjamin ne fut pas toujours totale.
17 Les enfants d’Israël qui habitaient les villes de Juda furent les seuls sur qui régna Roboam.
18 Alors le roi Roboam envoya Hadoram, qui était préposé aux impôts. Mais Hadoram fut lapidé par les enfants d’Israël, et il mourut. Et le roi Roboam se hâta de monter sur un char, pour s’enfuir à Jérusalem.
19 C’est ainsi qu’Israël s’est détaché de la maison de David jusqu’à ce jour.

This section mentions the twenty kings who sat on the throne of Judah after the schism, from Rehoboam, the son of Solomon (c. 931 BC), to Zedekiah (around 586 BC, C.), a sovereign in office at the time of the deportation to Babylon. It presents as well the righteous kings and their reforms as the bad kings and their disastrous influence. The kingdom of the north does not matter, since the Chronicles concentrate on the Davidic lineage.

Roboam listened to the stupid and evil advice of novices instead of following the good advice of wise and experienced men, which caused division in Israel. Surprisingly, despite all the strength that had characterized the reign of Solomon, the union between the tribes had remained very fragile, and the taking of power by a madman was enough to put an end to it. Rehoboam sought to gather the people together by force, but God did not permit it (# 2Ch 11: 1-4).
2 When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard about him, he was in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon, and returned from Egypt.
Jeroboam. He would become the first king of the northern kingdom, Israel (BC). See the story of his return from Egypt in # 1R 11: 26-40.
3 He was sent for. Then Jeroboam and all Israel came to Rehoboam, and said to him,
4 Your father made our yoke hard; Now alleviates this rude servitude and the heavy yoke imposed upon us by your father. And we will serve you.
5 He said to them, "Come back to me in three days." And the people went away.
6 And king Rehoboam consulted the old men that were with Solomon his father during his lifetime, and said, What counsel do you that you should answer this people?
7 And this is what they said unto him, If thou be good to this people, and receive them favorably, and speak well with them, they shall be thy servants for ever.
8 But Rehoboam left the advice of the old men, and he consulted the young men who had grown up with him and surrounded him.
9 He said to them, "What advice do you have to answer this people who speak this language to me? Reduces the yoke imposed on us by your father?
10 And this is what the young men who had grown up with him said unto him, Speak thus unto this people, who have spoken to thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou lighten it. Thou shalt speak to them thus: My little finger is bigger than my father's loins.
11 Now my father hath charged you with a heavy yoke, and I will make you heavier; My father chastised you with whips, and I will chastise you with scorpions.
12 And Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, according to the words of the king: Come back to me in three days.
13 The king answered them harshly. King Rehoboam left the council of the elders,
14 And spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, My father has made your yoke heavy, and I will make it heavier; My father chastised you with whips, and I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 So the king did not listen to the people; For it was directed by God, for the fulfillment of the word which Jehovah spake by Ahijah of Shiloh to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 When all Israel saw that the king was not listening to him, the people answered the king, "What part have we with David? We have no inheritance with the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel! Now, come to your house, David! And all Israel went into his tents.
10: 16-19
These vv. Relate the beginning of the schism. Ten tribes followed Jeroboam and were henceforth called Israel. The two other tribes, Benjamin and Judah, remaining loyal to the family of David, submitted to the authority of Roboam and were called Judah. However, the loyalty of Benjamin was not always complete.
17 The children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah were the only ones over whom Roboam reigned.
18 Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the taxes. But Hadoram was stoned by the children of Israel, and he died. And king Rehoboam hastened up into a chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 Thus Israel separated from the house of David unto this day.
