1 ¶ L’esprit de Dieu fut sur Azaria, fils d’Obed,
L’Esprit de Dieu. « Être sur quelqu’un » était courant, pour le Saint-Esprit, dans l’A.T. C’était un acte par lequel il rendait les serviteurs de Dieu capables de parler ou d’agir uniquement pour lui.
Azaria. Ce prophète, mentionné seulement ici, alla à la rencontre d’Asa lors de son retour victorieux et lui parla devant toute son armée.
2 et Azaria alla au-devant d’Asa et lui dit : Écoutez-moi, Asa, et tout Juda et Benjamin ! L’Éternel est avec vous quand vous êtes avec lui ; si vous le cherchez, vous le trouverez ; mais si vous l’abandonnez, il vous abandonnera.
La vérité spirituelle énoncée ici est fondamentale: Dieu est présent et puissant pour défendre son peuple, si ce dernier lui obéit. Cf. #De 20: 1 ; #1Ch 28:9 ; #Esa 55:6-7 ; #Jér 29:12-14 ; #Ja 4:8. Les huit mauvais rois, Jéroboam y compris, qui régnèrent sur Israël pendant les 41 ans de pouvoir d’Asa illustrèrent tous la vérité inverse (cf. #2Ch 12:1).
3 Pendant longtemps il n’y a eu pour Israël ni vrai Dieu, ni sacrificateur qui enseignât, ni loi.
4 Mais au sein de leur détresse ils sont retournés à l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, ils l’ont cherché, et ils l’ont trouvé.
5 Dans ces temps-là, point de sécurité pour ceux qui allaient et venaient, car il y avait de grands troubles parmi tous les habitants du pays ;
6 on se heurtait peuple contre peuple, ville contre ville, parce que Dieu les agitait par toutes sortes d’angoisses.
7 Vous donc, fortifiez-vous, et ne laissez pas vos mains s’affaiblir, car il y aura un salaire pour vos œuvres.
8 ¶ Après avoir entendu ces paroles et la prophétie d’Obed le prophète, Asa se fortifia et fit disparaître les abominations de tout le pays de Juda et de Benjamin et des villes qu’il avait prises dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, et il restaura l’autel de l’Éternel qui était devant le portique de l’Éternel.
la prophétie d’Oded. Il s’agit plutôt de son fils, selon le v. 1.
portique. Allusion à l’espace situé à l’extérieur du lieu saint, où se trouvait l’autel des holocaustes.
9 Il rassembla tout Juda et Benjamin, et ceux d’Éphraïm, de Manassé et de Siméon qui habitaient parmi eux, car un grand nombre de gens d’Israël se joignirent à lui lorsqu’ils virent que l’Éternel, son Dieu, était avec lui.
d’Éphraïm, de Manassé et de Siméon. Cela signifie que certains membres des dix tribus apostates du royaume du nord n’avaient pas abandonné Dieu. Beaucoup avaient émigré au sud, de sorte que toutes les tribus étaient représentées parmi les habitants de Juda.
10 Ils s’assemblèrent à Jérusalem le troisième mois de la quinzième année du règne d’Asa.
quinzième année. Vers 897 av. J.-C., en mai/juin, lors de la fête des semaines.
11 Ce jour-là, ils sacrifièrent à l’Éternel, sur le butin qu’ils avaient amené, sept cents bœufs et sept mille brebis.

Les adorateurs rassemblés promirent à nouveau d’obéir à Dieu (cf. #Ex 24: 1) et d’appliquer rigoureusement les lois qui punissaient de mort l’idolâtrie (cf. #De 17:2-5). Ils confirmèrent leur engagement par le sacrifice d’animaux pris sur le butin des Ethiopiens (#2Ch 14: 14).
12 Ils prirent l’engagement de chercher l’Éternel, le Dieu de leurs pères, de tout leur cœur et de toute leur âme ;
13 et quiconque ne chercherait pas l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, devait être mis à mort, petit ou grand, homme ou femme.
14 Ils jurèrent fidélité à l’Éternel à voix haute, avec des cris de joie, et au son des trompettes et des cors ;
15 tout Juda se réjouit de ce serment, car ils avaient juré de tout leur cœur, ils avaient cherché l’Éternel de plein gré, et ils l’avaient trouvé, et l’Éternel leur donna du repos de tous côtés.
16 Le roi Asa enleva même à Maaca, sa mère, la dignité de reine, parce qu’elle avait fait une idole pour Astarté. Asa abattit son idole, qu’il réduisit en poussière, et la brûla au torrent de Cédron.
17 Mais les hauts lieux ne disparurent point d’Israël, quoique le cœur d’Asa fût en entier à l’Éternel pendant toute sa vie.
18 Il mit dans la maison de Dieu les choses consacrées par son père et par lui-même, de l’argent, de l’or et des vases.
19 Il n’y eut point de guerre jusqu’à la trente-cinquième année du règne d’Asa.

1 ¶ The spirit of God was upon Azariah the son of Obed,
The Spirit of God. "Being on someone" was common, for the Holy Spirit, in the TA. It was an act by which he made the servants of God capable of speaking or acting only for him.
Azaria. This prophet, mentioned only here, went to meet Asa during his victorious return and spoke to him before all his army.
2 And Azaria went to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin. The LORD is with you when you are with him; If you seek it, you will find it; But if you forsake him, he will forsake you.
The spiritual truth spelled out here is fundamental: God is present and powerful to defend his people, if the latter obeys him. See # 20: 1; # 1Ch 28: 9; #Esa 55: 6-7; Jeremiah 29: 12-14; #Ja 4: 8. The eight evil kings, including Jeroboam, who reigned over Israel during Asa's 41 years of power, all illustrated the opposite truth (see # 2Ch 12: 1).
3 For a long time there was no true God for Israel, neither a priest who taught, nor a law.
4 But in the midst of their distress they returned unto the LORD God of Israel, and sought him, and found him.
5 In those days there was no security for those who came and went, for there was great trouble among all the inhabitants of the land;
6 people clashed against people, city against city, because God was agitating them with all kinds of anguish.
7 Be ye therefore strong, and let not your hands be weakened, for there shall be a reward for your works.
8 ¶ And when he heard these words, and the prophecy of Obed the prophet, Asa strengthened himself, and destroyed the abominations of all the land of Judah and Benjamin, and the cities which he had taken in mount Ephraim; Restored the altar of the LORD which was before the porch of the LORD.
The Oded prophecy. It is rather his son, according to v. 1.
Portal. Allusion to the space outside the holy place, where the altar of holocausts was.
9 And he gathered all Judah and Benjamin, and Ephraim, and Manasseh, and Simeon, who dwelt among them; for a great many of the people of Israel joined him when they saw that the LORD his God was with him.
Of Ephraim, of Manasseh, and of Simeon. This means that some members of the ten apostate tribes of the northern kingdom had not abandoned God. Many had emigrated to the south, so that all the tribes were represented among the inhabitants of Judah.
10 And they gathered themselves in Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa.
Fifteenth year. About 897 av. J.-C., in May / June, during the feast of the weeks.
11 And on that day they sacrificed to the LORD, out of the booty which they had brought, seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep.
15: 11-15
The worshipers assembled again promised to obey God (cf. Exodus 24: 1) and to apply rigorously the laws that punished idolatry for death (cf. # 17: 2-5). They confirmed their commitment by the sacrifice of animals taken from the spoils of the Ethiopians (# 2Ch 14:14).
12 They made a pledge to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul;
13 And whosoever shall not seek the LORD God of Israel, he shall be put to death, small or great, man or woman.
14 And they swore allegiance to Jehovah with a loud voice, with shouts of joy, and with the sound of trumpets and horns;
15 And all Judah rejoiced in this oath, for they had sworn with all their heart, and had sought the Lord willingly, and found him, and the LORD gave them rest on all sides.
16 King Asa even took away Maaca, his mother, the dignity of a queen, because she had made an idol for Astarte. Asa destroyed his idol, which he reduced to dust, and burned it at the torrent of Cedron.
17 But the high places did not disappear from Israel, although the heart of Asa was wholly with the LORD throughout his life.
18 And he put into the house of God the things consecrated by his father and by himself, and silver, and gold, and vessels.
19 There was no war until the thirty-fifth year of the reign of Asa.
