1 ¶ Josaphat eut en abondance des richesses et de la gloire, et il s’allia par mariage avec Achab.
18:1-34
Achab était roi d’Israël. Josaphat organisa le mariage de son fils (cf. #2Ch 21: 6) avec Athalie, la fille de ce roi impie, puis conclut une alliance militaire avec lui. Ce comportement insensé eut des conséquences tragiques:
1° Josaphat s’attira la colère de Dieu (#2Ch 19: 2);
2° après la mort de Josaphat, Athalie devint reine et exécuta presque tous les descendants de David pour s’emparer du pouvoir (#2Ch 22: 10);
3° en digne fille d’Achab, elle introduisit les idoles d’Israël en Juda, ce qui provoqua finalement la destruction et l’exil à Babylone.
La tendance de Josaphat à s’appuyer sur d’autres rois est manifeste dans le récit de son alliance avec Achab (v. #2Ch 18:1). Voir aussi 20:35-37 pour une alliance avec Achazia (av. J.-C.).
2 Au bout de quelques années, il descendit auprès d’Achab à Samarie ; et Achab tua pour lui et pour le peuple qui était avec lui un grand nombre de brebis et de bœufs, et il le sollicita de monter à Ramoth en Galaad.
3 Achab, roi d’Israël, dit à Josaphat, roi de Juda : Veux-tu venir avec moi à Ramoth en Galaad ? Josaphat lui répondit : Moi comme toi, et mon peuple comme ton peuple, nous irons l’attaquer avec toi.
4 ¶ Puis Josaphat dit au roi d’Israël: Consulte maintenant, je te prie, la parole de l’Éternel.
5 Le roi d’Israël assembla les prophètes, au nombre de quatre cents, et leur dit : Irons-nous attaquer Ramoth en Galaad, ou dois-je y renoncer ? Et ils répondirent : Monte, et Dieu la livrera entre les mains du roi.
Les mauvais rois disposaient de faux prophètes qui leur disaient ce qu’ils voulaient entendre (cf. #Esa 30:10-11 ; #Jér 14:13-16 ; #Jér 23: 16, #Jér 23: 21, #Jér 23:30-36). Le vrai prophète, celui qui transmettait le message de Dieu, courait le risque d’être arrêté (v. #2Ch 18: 26).
6 Mais Josaphat dit : N’y a-t-il plus ici aucun prophète de l’Éternel, par qui nous puissions le consulter ?
7 Le roi d’Israël répondit à Josaphat: Il y a encore un homme par qui l’on pourrait consulter l’Éternel ; mais je le hais, car il ne me prophétise rien de bon, il ne prophétise jamais que du mal : c’est Michée, fils de Jimla. Et Josaphat dit : Que le roi ne parle pas ainsi !
8 Alors le roi d’Israël appela un eunuque, et dit : Fais venir tout de suite Michée, fils de Jimla.
9 Le roi d’Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, étaient assis chacun sur son trône, revêtus de leurs habits royaux ; ils étaient assis dans la place à l’entrée de la porte de Samarie. Et tous les prophètes prophétisaient devant eux.
10 Sédécias, fils de Kenaana, s’était fait des cornes de fer, et il dit : Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Avec ces cornes, tu frapperas les Syriens jusqu’à les détruire.
11 Et tous les prophètes prophétisèrent de même, en disant : Monte à Ramoth en Galaad ! tu auras du succès, et l’Éternel la livrera entre les mains du roi.
12 Le messager qui était allé appeler Michée lui parla ainsi : Voici, les prophètes d’un commun accord prophétisent du bien au roi ; que ta parole soit donc comme la parole de chacun d’eux ! annonce du bien !
13 Michée répondit : L’Éternel est vivant ! j’annoncerai ce que dira mon Dieu.
14 Lorsqu’il fut arrivé auprès du roi, le roi lui dit : Michée, irons-nous attaquer Ramoth en Galaad, ou dois-je y renoncer ? Il répondit : Montez ! vous aurez du succès, et ils seront livrés entre vos mains.
15 Et le roi lui dit : Combien de fois me faudra-t-il te faire jurer de ne me dire que la vérité au nom de l’Éternel ?
16 Michée répondit : Je vois tout Israël dispersé sur les montagnes, comme des brebis qui n’ont point de berger ; et l’Éternel dit : Ces gens n’ont point de maître, que chacun retourne en paix dans sa maison !
17 Le roi d’Israël dit à Josaphat : Ne te l’ai-je pas dit ? Il ne prophétise sur moi rien de bon, il ne prophétise que du mal.
18 Et Michée dit : Écoutez donc la parole de l’Éternel ! J’ai vu l’Éternel assis sur son trône, et toute l’armée des cieux se tenant à sa droite et à sa gauche.
19 Et l’Éternel dit : Qui séduira Achab, roi d’Israël, pour qu’il monte à Ramoth en Galaad et qu’il y périsse ? Ils répondirent l’un d’une manière, l’autre d’une autre.
20 Et un esprit vint se présenter devant l’Éternel, et dit : Moi, je le séduirai. L’Éternel lui dit : Comment ?
21 Je sortirai, répondit-il, et je serai un esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de tous ses prophètes. L’Éternel dit : Tu le séduiras, et tu en viendras à bout ; sors, et fais ainsi.
22 Et maintenant, voici, l’Éternel a mis un esprit de mensonge dans la bouche de tes prophètes qui sont là. Et l’Éternel a prononcé du mal contre toi.
23 Alors Sédécias, fils de Kenaana, s’étant approché, frappa Michée sur la joue, et dit : Par quel chemin l’esprit de l’Éternel est-il sorti de moi pour te parler ?
24 Michée répondit : Tu le verras au jour où tu iras de chambre en chambre pour te cacher.
25 Le roi d’Israël dit : Prenez Michée et emmenez-le vers Amon, chef de la ville, et vers Joas, fils du roi.
26 Vous direz : Ainsi parle le roi : Mettez cet homme en prison, et nourrissez-le du pain et de l’eau d’affliction, jusqu’à ce que je revienne en paix.
27 Et Michée dit : Si tu reviens en paix, l’Éternel n’a point parlé par moi. Il dit encore : Vous tous, peuples, entendez !
28 ¶ Le roi d’Israël et Josaphat, roi de Juda, montèrent à Ramoth en Galaad.
29 Le roi d’Israël dit à Josaphat : Je veux me déguiser pour aller au combat ; mais toi, revêts-toi de tes habits. Et le roi d’Israël se déguisa, et ils allèrent au combat.
30 Le roi de Syrie avait donné cet ordre aux chefs de ses chars : Vous n’attaquerez ni petit ni grand, mais vous attaquerez seulement le roi d’Israël.
31 Quand les chefs des chars aperçurent Josaphat, ils dirent : C’est le roi d’Israël. Et ils l’entourèrent pour l’attaquer. Josaphat poussa un cri, et l’Éternel le secourut, et Dieu les écarta de lui.
32 Les chefs des chars, voyant que ce n’était pas le roi d’Israël, s’éloignèrent de lui.
33 Alors un homme tira de son arc au hasard, et frappa le roi d’Israël au défaut de la cuirasse. Le roi dit à celui qui dirigeait son char : Tourne, et fais-moi sortir du champ de bataille, car je suis blessé.
34 Le combat devint acharné ce jour-là. Le roi d’Israël fut retenu dans son char, en face des Syriens, jusqu’au soir, et il mourut vers le coucher du soleil.

1 ¶ And Jehoshaphat had riches and glory in abundance, and made a marriage with Ahab.
18: 1-34
Ahab was king of Israel. Josaphat organized his son's marriage with Athaliah, the daughter of this impious king, and concluded a military alliance with him. This senseless behavior had tragic consequences:
1 Jehoshaphat drew the wrath of God (2Ch 19: 2);
(2) after the death of Jehoshaphat, Athalia became queen and executed almost all the descendants of David to seize power (# 2Ch 22:10);
(3) as a daughter of Ahab, she brought the idols of Israel into Judah, which eventually brought destruction and exile to Babylon.
Jehoshaphat's tendency to rely on other kings is evident in the account of his covenant with Ahab (2: 18: 1). See also 20: 35-37 for an alliance with Ahaziah (bc).
2 After a few years he went down to Ahab in Samaria; And Ahab slew for him and for the people that were with him a great number of sheep and oxen, and he desired him to go up to Ramoth-gilead.
3 Ahab king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, Will you come with me to Ramoth-gilead? And Jehoshaphat said unto him, As thou, and my people as thy people, we will go and attack him with thee.
4 Then Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, "Now hear the word of the Lord, I pray thee.
5 And the king of Israel gathered together the prophets, four hundred, and said unto them, Shall we attack Ramoth-gilead, or ought I to renounce it? And they said, Go up, and God will deliver it into the hand of the king.
The evil kings had false prophets who told them what they wanted to hear (see #Esa 30: 10-11; # Jer. 14: 13-16; # Jer. 23:16; # Jer. 23: 21; : 30-36). The true prophet, the one who transmitted God's message, ran the risk of being arrested (see # 2Ch 18:26).
6 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there no prophet of the Lord here, by whom we may consult him?
7 And the king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, There is yet a man by whom the LORD may be consulted; But I hate him, for he does not prophesy good to me, he never prophesies only evil: it is Micah the son of Jimla. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king speak thus.
8 Then the king of Israel called an eunuch, and said, Bring forth Micaiah the son of Jimla.
9 And the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat king of Judah, were seated on their throne, clothed in their royal robes; They were sitting in the square at the entrance of the gate of Samaria. And all the prophets prophesied before them.
10 And Zedekiah the son of Kenaana had made horns of iron, and said, Thus saith the LORD, With these horns thou shalt smite the Syrians, and destroy them.
11 And all the prophets prophesied, saying, Go up to Ramoth-gilead. Thou shalt be successful, and the LORD shall deliver it into the hand of the king.
12 And the messenger that went to call Micah spake unto him, saying, Behold, the prophets of one accord prophesy good to the king; Let your word be like the word of each of them! Announcement of the property!
13 And Micaiah answered, The LORD liveth; I will announce what my God will say.
14 And when he came to the king, the king said to him, Micaiah, shall we go and attack Ramoth-gilead, or shall I renounce it? And he said, Go up! You will be successful, and they will be delivered into your hands.
15 And the king said unto him, How often shall I swear that thou shalt tell me the truth in the name of the LORD?
16 And Micah said, I see all Israel scattered over the mountains, like sheep that have no shepherd; And the LORD said, "These people have no master, let every man return to his house in peace."
17 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee? He prophesies nothing good about me, he prophesies only evil.
18 And Micah said, Hear now the word of the LORD. I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left.
19 And the LORD said, Who shall deceive Ahab king of Israel, that he may go up to Ramoth-gilead, and perish? They answered one in one way, the other in another.
20 And a spirit came before the LORD, and said, I will deceive him. And the LORD said unto him, What?
21 And I will go forth, and he will be a spirit of falsehood in the mouth of all his prophets. And the LORD said, Thou shalt seduce him, and thou shalt overcome it; Go out, and do so.
22 And now, behold, the LORD hath put a spirit of falsehood in the mouth of thy prophets that are there. And the LORD hath spoken evil against thee.
23 Then Zedekiah the son of Kenaana came and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, How did the Spirit of the LORD come out of me to speak to thee?
24 And Micah answered and said, Thou shalt see it in the day that thou goest from thy room to hide thyself.
25 And the king of Israel said, Take Micaiah, and bring him to Amon the chief of the city, and to Joash the king's son.
26 And you shall say, Thus says the king, Put this man in prison, and feed him with bread and water of affliction, until I come again in peace.
27 And Micaiah said, If thou return in peace, the LORD hath not spoken by me. And he said, All ye peoples, hear!
28 And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead.
29 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself to go into battle; But clothe thy garments. And the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into battle.
30 And the king of Syria commanded the captains of his chariots, saying, You shall not attack little or great, but you will attack only the king of Israel.
31 And when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, This is the king of Israel. And they surrounded him to attack him. And Jehoshaphat uttered a cry, and the Lord helped him, and God removed them from him.
32 And the captains of the chariots, seeing that it was not the king of Israel, departed from him.
33 Then a man drew from his bow at random, and struck the king of Israel on the breast of the cuirass. The king said to the man who was in charge of his chariot, Turn, and bring me out of the battle-field, for I am wounded.
34 The fight became fierce that day. The king of Israel was held in his chariot before the Syrians until the evening, and he died at sunset.
