1 ¶ Le Seigneur, l’Éternel, m’envoya cette vision. Voici, c’était une corbeille de fruits.
une corbeille de fruits. Dans la quatrième vision, des fruits étaient mûris par le soleil estival; de la même façon, Israël était mûr pour le jugement.
2 Il dit : Que vois-tu, Amos ? Je répondis : Une corbeille de fruits. Et l’Éternel me dit : La fin est venue pour mon peuple d’Israël ; Je ne lui pardonnerai plus.
3 En ce jour-là, les chants du palais seront des gémissements, Dit le Seigneur, l’Éternel ; On jettera partout en silence une multitude de cadavres.
4 ¶ Écoutez ceci, vous qui dévorez l’indigent, Et qui ruinez les malheureux du pays !
5 Vous dites : Quand la nouvelle lune sera-t-elle passée, Afin que nous vendions du blé ? Quand finira le sabbat, afin que nous ouvrions les greniers ? Nous diminuerons l’épha, nous augmenterons le prix, Nous falsifierons les balances pour tromper ;
la nouvelle lune. Son calendrier étant lunaire, Israël célébrait ce jour comme un jour de fête officiel. Comme pour le sabbat, tout travail était alors interdit (#1S 20:5-6 ; #2R 4:23 ; #Ez 46:3). L’impatience des commerçants à voir arriver la fin de ce jour férié attestait de leur cupidité.
l’épha … les balances. Grâce à leurs balances falsifiées, les commerçants minimisaient le poids des marchandises qu’on leur fournissait et augmentaient le prix de celles qu’ils vendaient.
6 Puis nous achèterons les misérables pour de l’argent, Et le pauvre pour une paire de souliers, Et nous vendrons la criblure du froment.
la criblure du froment. On mêlait la paille au bon grain dans le but de voler le client.
7 L’Éternel l’a juré par la gloire de Jacob : Je n’oublierai jamais aucune de leurs œuvres.
la gloire de Jacob. Tout aussi sûrement qu’Israël était rempli d’orgueil, l’Éternel se rappellerait les œuvres de son peuple (cf. #Am 6:8).
8 Le pays, à cause d’elles, ne sera-t-il pas ébranlé, Et tous ses habitants ne seront-ils pas dans le deuil ? Le pays montera tout entier comme le fleuve, Il se soulèvera et s’affaissera comme le fleuve d’Égypte.
comme le fleuve d’Égypte. Tous les ans, le Nil, en débordant de son lit, fournissait l’eau et les dépôts nécessaires à l’agriculture du pays. Pareil à lui, le châtiment divin inonderait le pays.
9 En ce jour-là, dit le Seigneur, l’Éternel, Je ferai coucher le soleil à midi, Et j’obscurcirai la terre en plein jour ;
je ferai coucher le soleil à midi. Probable allusion à l’éclipse totale du soleil qui survint vers 763 av. J.-C.: elle illustrait le jugement de Dieu à venir.
10 Je changerai vos fêtes en deuil, Et tous vos chants en lamentations, Je couvrirai de sacs tous les reins, Et je rendrai chauves toutes les têtes ; Je mettrai le pays dans le deuil comme pour un fils unique, Et sa fin sera comme un jour d’amertume.
sacs. Généralement en poil de chèvre, le plus souvent de couleur noire ou foncée (cf. #Ap 6:12), et placée directement à même la peau, à la hauteur des hanches, de façon à découvrir le buste pour que l’on puisse plus facilement se frapper la poitrine (#Esa 32:11-12), cette tenue marquait la tristesse et la repentance dans le monde antique (#Né 9:1 ; #Esa 37:1 ; #Mt 11:21). Comme leurs messages invitaient à la repentance, les prophètes étaient souvent vêtus de cette façon (#Mt 3:4 ; #Ap 11:3).
11 ¶ Voici, les jours viennent, dit le Seigneur, l’Éternel, Où j’enverrai la famine dans le pays, Non pas la disette du pain et la soif de l’eau, Mais la faim et la soif d’entendre les paroles de l’Éternel.
8:11-12 En période de prospérité, Israël rejetait les prophètes (cf. #Am 7:10-17). Durant l’exil, aucune parole de l’Éternel ne se ferait plus entendre (cf. #1S 28:6).
12 Ils seront alors errants d’une mer à l’autre, Du septentrion à l’orient, Ils iront çà et là pour chercher la parole de l’Éternel, Et ils ne la trouveront pas.
13 En ce jour, les belles jeunes filles et les jeunes hommes mourront de soif.
14 Ils jurent par le péché de Samarie, Et ils disent : Vive ton Dieu, Dan ! Vive la voie de Beer-Schéba ! Mais ils tomberont, et ne se relèveront plus.
Samarie … Dan. Jéroboam Ier avait érigé des autels sur ces deux sites, afin d’éviter que la population de l’Israël du nord n’aille jusqu’à Jérusalem pour adorer (#1R 12:26-29).
Beer-Schéba. Située dans le sud de Juda, à 80 km au sud-ouest de Jérusalem, Beer-Schéba avait joué un rôle important dans l’histoire d’Israël (cf. #Ge 21: 33 ; #Ge 26:33 ; #1S 8:1-3 ; #1R 19:3-7). Apparemment, les Israélites du nord franchissaient sans problème la frontière pour adorer là-bas (cf. #Am 8:14).

1 ¶ The Lord God showed me this vision. Here, it was a fruit basket.
a fruit basket. The fourth vision, fruits were ripened by the summer sun; in the same way, Israel was ripe for judgment.
2 And he said: What do you see, Amos? I said, A basket of fruit. And the Lord said to me: The end is come upon my people Israel; I do forgive them.
3 On that day, the songs of the temple will be moaning, saith the Lord GOD; everywhere we lay in silence a multitude of corpses.
4 ¶ Hear this, you who swallow up the needy, and the poor who are ruining the country!
5 saying, When will will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may open the barn? We will reduce the ephah, we will increase the price, falsifying the balances by deceit?
the new moon. His calendar is lunar, Israel celebrated this day as an official holiday. As for the Sabbath, any work was then forbidden (# 1S 20: 5-6; # 2R 4:23; #Ez 46: 3). Impatience traders arrive to see the end of this holiday attested to their greed.
the ephah ... scales. Through their falsified balances, traders downplayed the weight of goods that provided them and increased the price of those they were selling.
6 That we may buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of shoes, and sell the refuse of the wheat.
the refuse of the wheat. We mixed the straw chaff in order to steal the customer.
7 The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: I will never forget any of their works.
the glory of Jacob. Just as surely Israel was filled with pride, the Lord would remember the works of his people (cf. #AM 6: 8).
8 countries, because of them, only he will not be shaken, and all that dwell they will not mourn? The country will rise as the entire river, it will rise and sink like the river of Egypt.
as the river of Egypt. Every year, the Nile overflowing its banks, provided water and deposits necessary for the country's agriculture. Like him, the divine punishment would flood the country.
9 In that day, saith the Lord GOD, I will sleep the sun at noon, and darken the earth in broad daylight;
I will cause the sun at noon. Likely referring to the total eclipse of the sun which came to 763 BC. J.-C .: she illustrated God's judgment to come.
10 I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; I sackcloth upon all loins, and I will make baldness upon every head; I will make it as the mourning for an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.
bags. Usually goat hair, usually black or dark color (see #Ap 6:12) and placed directly on the skin, to hip height, so as to expose the bust so that we can easily beat his breast (#Esa 32: 11-12), this outfit marked sadness and repentance in the ancient world (# 9 Born: 1; #Esa 37: 1; 11:21 #Mt). Like their messages invited to repentance, the prophets were often dressed this way (#Mt 3: 4; #Ap 11: 3).
11 ¶ Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, and thirst of water, but hunger and thirst to hear words of the LORD.
8: 11-12 In good times, Israel rejected the prophets (cf. #AM 7: 10-17). During the exile, no word of the Lord would hear (see # 1 S 28: 6).
12 They shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, They go to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, and they shall not find it.
13 In that day the lovely young women and young men faint for thirst.
14 They swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, Thy god, Dan! Long live the way of Beersheba! But they will fall, and never rise up again.
... Dan Samaria. Jeroboam I had erected altars on both sites, to prevent the population of northern Israel will go up to Jerusalem to worship (# 1R 12: 26-29).
Beersheba. Located in the south of Judah, 80 km to the southwest of Jerusalem, Beersheba had played an important role in the history of Israel (cf. #Ge 21: 33; #Ge 26:33; # 1S 8 : 1-3; # 1R 19: 3-7). Apparently, the Israelites crossed the northern border without problems for the worship there (cf. #AM 8:14).
