AMOS 09: 1 à 15 *** +
1 ¶ Je vis le Seigneur qui se tenait sur l’autel. Et il dit : Frappe les chapiteaux et que les seuils s’ébranlent, Et brise-les sur leurs têtes à tous ! Je ferai périr le reste par l’épée. Aucun d’eux ne pourra se sauver en fuyant, Aucun d’eux n’échappera.
La cinquième vision s’ouvrait sur l’image du Seigneur, debout à côté de l’autel érigé à Béthel et ordonnant que le sanctuaire soit détruit et s’écroule sur ceux qui y offraient leurs sacrifices. Personne ne serait épargné.
2 S’ils pénètrent dans le séjour des morts, Ma main les en arrachera ; S’ils montent aux cieux, Je les en ferai descendre.
9:2-4 Chacun chercherait désespérément à fuir, mais personne ne parviendrait à échapper au jugement. Alors que David voyait dans l’omniprésence de Dieu un sujet de réconfort (#Ps 139:7-10 ; cf. #Jér 23:23-24), les méchants n’auraient droit qu’à la colère divine (cf. #Ap 20: 13).
3 S’ils se cachent au sommet du Carmel, Je les y chercherai et je les saisirai ; S’ils se dérobent à mes regards dans le fond de la mer, Là j’ordonnerai au serpent de les mordre.
Carmel. Région montagneuse s’élevant à près de 550 m d’altitude, célèbre pour ses nombreuses grottes et forêts.
4 S’ils vont en captivité devant leurs ennemis, Là j’ordonnerai à l’épée de les faire périr ; Je dirigerai contre eux mes regards Pour faire du mal et non du bien.
5 Le Seigneur, l’Éternel des armées, touche la terre, et elle tremble, Et tous ses habitants sont dans le deuil ; Elle monte tout entière comme le fleuve, Et elle s’affaisse comme le fleuve d’Égypte.
9:5-9 Afin que personne ne puisse mettre en doute la puissance de l’Éternel, Amos rappela son omnipotence, révélée dans la création et dans son règne souverain sur les nations.
6 Il a bâti sa demeure dans les cieux, Et fondé sa voûte sur la terre ; Il appelle les eaux de la mer, Et les répand à la surface de la terre : L’Éternel est son nom.
7 N’êtes-vous pas pour moi comme les enfants des Ethiopiens, Enfants d’Israël ? dit l’Éternel. N’ai-je pas fait sortir Israël du pays d’Égypte, Comme les Philistins de Caphtor et les Syriens de Kir ?
8 Voici, le Seigneur, l’Éternel, a les yeux sur le royaume coupable. Je le détruirai de dessus la face de la terre ; Toutefois je ne détruirai pas entièrement la maison de Jacob, Dit l’Éternel.
9 Car voici, je donnerai mes ordres, Et je secouerai la maison d’Israël parmi toutes les nations, Comme on secoue avec le crible, Sans qu’il tombe à terre un seul grain.
secouerai … parmi toutes les nations. Seule la paille serait châtiée; un reste serait préservé et hériterait des bénédictions mentionnées dans les vv. suivants.
10 Tous les pécheurs de mon peuple mourront par l’épée, Ceux qui disent : Le malheur n’approchera pas, ne nous atteindra pas.
11 ¶ En ce temps-là, je relèverai de sa chute la maison de David, J’en réparerai les brèches, j’en redresserai les ruines, Et je la rebâtirai comme elle était autrefois,
la maison de David. Allusion à la dynastie davidique. Dieu rétablira et reconstruira cette « maison » sur la terre pour que Christ règne pendant le royaume millénaire (cf. #Za 14:9-11). Les apôtres utilisèrent ce passage pour illustrer l’idée que les païens pouvaient bénéficier de la rédemption divine.
9:11-15 Les bénédictions du millénium seront réservées au reste fidèle ultime, lorsque le Messie viendra régner personnellement sur toutes les nations, depuis le trône de David à Jérusalem. Les Juifs ne seront plus jamais arrachés à leur terre, reçue de Dieu en héritage.
12 Afin qu’ils possèdent le reste d’Édom et toutes les nations Sur lesquelles mon nom a été invoqué, Dit l’Éternel, qui accomplira ces choses.
13 Voici, les jours viennent, dit l’Éternel, Où le laboureur suivra de près le moissonneur, Et celui qui foule le raisin celui qui répand la semence, Où le moût ruissellera des montagnes Et coulera de toutes les collines.
9:13-14 Description d’une prospérité extraordinaire (cf. #Lé 26:5 ; #Joe 3:18 ; contraster avec #Esa 5). La terre sera si fertile que les saisons de la semence et de la moisson se chevaucheront les unes les autres. Cette prospérité encouragera un rapatriement massif (cf. #Esa 11:15-16) et la reconstruction d’Israël (cf. #Za 2:1-5).
14 Je ramènerai les captifs de mon peuple d’Israël ; Ils rebâtiront les villes dévastées et les habiteront, Ils planteront des vignes et en boiront le vin, Ils établiront des jardins et en mangeront les fruits.
15 Je les planterai dans leur pays, Et ils ne seront plus arrachés du pays que je leur ai donné, Dit L’Éternel, ton Dieu.
ils ne seront plus arrachés du pays. L’accomplissement ultime de la promesse, faite par Dieu à Abraham, d’un territoire (cf. #Ge 12:7 ; #Ge 15: 7 ; #Ge 17: 8) surviendra au cours du règne millénaire de Christ sur la terre (cf. #Joe 2:26-27).

1 ¶ I saw the Lord standing on the altar. And he said, Smite the capitals so that the thresholds may shake; and break them in the head at all! I will destroy the rest with the sword. None of them will flee away, none of them escape.
The fifth vision opened on the image of the Lord standing beside the altar erected at Bethel and ordering that the sanctuary was destroyed and collapses on those who offered their sacrifices. No one would be spared.
2 Though they dig into Sheol, my hand will take them; If they climb up to heaven, I will bring them down.
9: 2-4 Each desperately seeking to flee but no one successfully escape judgment. When David saw the omnipresence of God comfort of subject (#PS 139: 7-10; cf. # Jer 23: 23-24), the wicked would be allowed only divine wrath (see # Rev 20: 13).
3 If they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them; If they hide from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent to bite them.
Carmel. mountainous area amounting to almost 550 m above sea level, famous for its caves and forests.
4 If they go into captivity before their enemies, there I will command the sword to destroy them; I will set my eyes against them for evil and not for good.
5 The Lord God of hosts touches the earth and it melts, and all its inhabitants mourn; It rises as the entire Nile, and sinks like the river of Egypt.
9: 5-9 So that no one can doubt the power of the Lord Amos remembered his omnipotence revealed in creation and in his sovereign rule over the nations.
6 He built his home in the heavens, and has founded his vault on the earth; He calls the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the surface of the earth: The LORD is his name.
7 Are you not for me as children of the Ethiopians, O children of Israel? says the Lord. Have I not brought Israel out of Egypt, the Philistines from Caphtor and the Arameans from Kir?
8 Behold, the Lord, the Lord is watching the sinful kingdom. I destroy from off the face of the earth; However I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.
9 For behold, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations as one shakes with a sieve, falls to the ground Without a single grain.
... will shake all nations. Only the straw would be chastised; a remnant would be preserved and would inherit the blessings mentioned in vv. following.
10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor meet us. '
¶ 11 In that day will I raise of his fall the house of David, I close up the breaches, I will raise up his ruins, and I will build as it once was,
the house of David. Referring to the Davidic dynasty. God will restore and rebuild this "house" on earth for Christ to reign during the millennial kingdom (cf. #Za 14: 9-11). The apostles used this passage illustrate the idea that pagans could benefit from the Divine redemption.
9: 11-15 The blessings of the millennium will be reserved to the rest ultimate true when the Messiah will reign personally upon all the nations, from the throne of David in Jerusalem. The Jews will never be uprooted from their land, God-given inheritance.
12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord that doeth this.
13 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; the wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills.
9: 13-14 Description of extraordinary prosperity (see # Lev 26: 5; 3:18 #Joe; contrast with #Esa 5). The land will be fertile as the seasons of sowing and harvest will overlap each other. This prosperity will encourage mass repatriation (cf. #Esa 11: 15-16) and the reconstruction of Israel (cf. #Za 2: 1-5).
14 I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel; They shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them and they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 I will plant them upon their land, and they will not be uprooted from the land I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.
they will not be uprooted from the land. The ultimate fulfillment of the promise made by God to Abraham, territory (see #Ge 12: 7; #Ge 15: 7; #Ge 17: 8) occur during the millennial reign of Christ on earth (see #Joe 2: 26-27).
