ÉSAÏE 10 : 1 À 11 ***
1 ¶ Malheur à ceux qui prononcent des ordonnances iniques, Et à ceux qui transcrivent des arrêts injustes,
2 Pour refuser justice aux pauvres, Et ravir leur droit aux malheureux de mon peuple, Pour faire des veuves leur proie, Et des orphelins leur butin !
3 Que ferez-vous au jour du châtiment, Et de la ruine qui du lointain fondra sur vous ? Vers qui fuirez-vous, pour avoir du secours, Et où laisserez-vous votre gloire ?
4 Les uns seront courbés parmi les captifs, Les autres tomberont parmi les morts. Malgré tout cela, sa colère ne s’apaise point, Et sa main est encore étendue.
5 ¶ Malheur à l’Assyrien, verge de ma colère ! La verge dans sa main, c’est l’instrument de ma fureur.
6 Je l’ai lâché contre une nation impie, Je l’ai fait marcher contre le peuple de mon courroux, Pour qu’il se livre au pillage et fasse du butin, Pour qu’il le foule aux pieds comme la boue des rues.
7 Mais il n’en juge pas ainsi, Et ce n’est pas là la pensée de son cœur ; Il ne songe qu’à détruire, Qu’à exterminer les nations en foule.
8 Car il dit : Mes princes ne sont-ils pas autant de rois ?
9 N’en a-t-il pas été de Calno comme de Carkemisch ? N’en a-t-il pas été de Hamath comme d’Arpad ? N’en a-t-il pas été de Samarie comme de Damas ?
10 De même que ma main a atteint les royaumes des idoles, Où il y avait plus d’images qu’à Jérusalem et à Samarie,
11 Ce que j’ai fait à Samarie et à ses idoles, Ne le ferai-je pas à Jérusalem et à ses images ?

ordonnances iniques … refuser justice aux pauvres. Le prophète revint à l’énoncé des raisons de la colère divine:
1° l’absence d’équité dans la façon de rendre la justice;
2° le traitement impitoyable réservé aux faibles.
10:2
veuves … orphelins. Voir #Esa 1:17.
10:3
jour du châtiment. Les Assyriens seraient les premiers envahisseurs, suivis de Babylone et d’autres puissances étrangères.
10:5
verge de ma colère. Dieu utilisa l’Assyrie comme un instrument de son jugement contre Israël et Juda. Il fit plus tard de même avec Babylone pour punir Juda (#Ha 1:6).
10:6
nation impie. C’est-à-dire « mon peuple » (v. #Esa 10:2), Israël et Juda.
10:7
ce n’est pas là la pensée de son cœur. L’Assyrie était loin de se douter qu’elle n’était qu’un instrument au service de l’Éternel; elle pensait que sa conquête d’Israël était le fruit de sa propre puissance.
10:9
Calno … Damas. Ces villes, avec leurs territoires, avaient toutes capitulé devant les envahisseurs assyriens.
10:10-11
ne le ferai-je pas. L’orgueilleuse Assyrie avertissait Jérusalem qu’elle l’emporterait contre elle, tout comme elle avait servi d’instrument entre les mains de Dieu contre d’autres nations.

1 ¶ Woe to those who pronounce unjust statutes, and to those who transcribe unfair judgments
2 To deny justice to the poor, and take away the right from the poor of my people, to make widows their prey, And the fatherless their prey!
3 What do you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far you? To whom will you flee for help, and where will ye leave your glory?
4 they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall among the dead. Despite all this, his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
5 ¶ Woe to the Assyrian, the rod of my anger! The staff in their hand is the instrument of my wrath.
6 I will send him against a godless nation, I marched against the people of my wrath, for it is the spoil and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets .
7 But he did not judge well, and this is not the thought of his heart; He thinks to destroy and cut off nations not a few.
8 For he saith, My princes are they not altogether kings?
9 Do has he not been Calno as Carchemish? Did he not Hamath as Arpad? Did he not Samaria as Damascus?
10 As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, where there were more pictures of Jerusalem and of Samaria;
11 What I have done unto Samaria and her idols, Do I not do to Jerusalem and her idols?

Orders unfair ... refuse justice to the poor. The Prophet returned to the statement of reasons of divine wrath:
1 inequity in the way of administering justice;
2 ruthless treatment of low.
10:2
widows ... orphans. See # Esa 1:17.
10:3
day of visitation. The Assyrians were the first invaders, followed by Babylon and other foreign powers.
10:5
rod of my anger. God used Assyria as an instrument of judgment against Israel and Judah. He later even Babylon to punish Judah (# Ha 1:6).
10:6
godless nation. That is to say "my people" (v. # Esa 10:2), Israel and Judah.
10:7
this is not the thought of his heart. Assyria was far from suspecting that she was only an instrument in the service of the Lord; she thought her conquest of Israel was the result of his own power.
10:9
Calno ... Damascus. These cities with their territories, all had capitulated to the Assyrian invaders.
10:10-11
not I will not. The proud Assyria warned that Jerusalem would prevail against her, just as she had served as an instrument in the hands of God against other nations.
