ÉSAÏE 36 : 12 À 22 ***
12 Rabschaké répondit : Est-ce à ton maître et à toi que mon maître m’a envoyé dire ces paroles ? N’est-ce pas à ces hommes assis sur la muraille pour manger leurs excréments et pour boire leur urine avec vous ?
13 Puis Rabschaké s’avança et cria de toute sa force en langue judaïque : Écoutez les paroles du grand roi, du roi d’Assyrie !
14 Ainsi parle le roi : Qu’Ézéchias ne vous abuse point, car il ne pourra vous délivrer.
15 Qu’Ézéchias ne vous amène point à vous confier en l’Éternel, en disant : L’Éternel nous délivrera, cette ville ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi d’Assyrie.
16 N’écoutez point Ézéchias ; car ainsi parle le roi d’Assyrie : Faites la paix avec moi, rendez-vous à moi, et chacun de vous mangera de sa vigne et de son figuier, et chacun boira de l’eau de sa citerne,
17 jusqu’à ce que je vienne, et que je vous emmène dans un pays comme le vôtre, dans un pays de blé et de vin, un pays de pain et de vignes.
18 Qu’Ézéchias ne vous séduise point, en disant : L’Éternel nous délivrera. Les dieux des nations ont-ils délivré chacun son pays de la main du roi d’Assyrie ?
19 Où sont les dieux de Hamath et d’Arpad ? Où sont les dieux de Sepharvaïm ? Ont-ils délivré Samarie de ma main ?
20 Parmi tous les dieux de ces pays, quels sont ceux qui ont délivré leur pays de ma main, pour que l’Éternel délivre Jérusalem de ma main ?
21 Mais ils se turent, et ne lui répondirent pas un mot ; car le roi avait donné cet ordre : Vous ne lui répondrez pas.
22 Et Eliakim, fils de Hilkija, chef de la maison du roi, Schebna, le secrétaire, et Joach, fils d’Asaph, l’archiviste, vinrent auprès d’Ézéchias, les vêtements déchirés, et lui rapportèrent les paroles de Rabschaké.

ces hommes assis sur la muraille. Les émissaires étrangers cherchèrent à saper le moral des habitants en évoquant devant qui voulait les entendre les horreurs de la disette qu’un long siège provoquerait.
36:13-17 Rabschaké parla plus longtemps et plus fort pour suggérer qu’Ézéchias était incapable de sauver la ville, tandis que le roi d’Assyrie déverserait sur le peuple l’abondance de sa richesse (vv. #Esa 36:16-17).
36:16
Faites la paix avec moi. Littéralement « faites une bénédiction avec moi ». L’émissaire invita le peuple à rendre les armes et à faire alliance avec l’Assyrie.
36:17
je vous emmène dans un pays. Rabschaké ne manqua pas de rappeler la pratique bien connue des Assyriens consistant à déporter ceux qu’ils avaient vaincus vers des terres lointaines.
36:18-20 Aux yeux de Rabschaké, l’Éternel ne valait pas plus que les nombreux dieux qu’adoraient les nations conquises par l’Assyrie (cf. #Esa 10:8-11).
36:21
Mais ils se turent. Ézéchias avait visiblement anticipé l’ultimatum que ne manqueraient pas d’imposer les Assyriens, et il avait ordonné à ses représentants et aux sentinelles postées sur la muraille de ne pas réagir.
36:22
vêtements déchirés. Les représentants du roi lui firent leur rapport dans un état de grande tristesse, choqués par le blasphème qu’ils pensaient avoir entendu proférer.

12 But Rabshakeh said: Is thy master, and to thee my master sent me to speak these words? Is it not to the men sitting on the wall, to eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
13 Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with all his might in Judean, Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
14 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you, for he will deliver you.
15 Neither let Hezekiah make you not to trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will deliver us, this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.
16 Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus saith the king of Assyria: Make peace with me and come to me, and then eat ye every one of his vine and his fig tree, and everyone drinks the water of his own cistern;
17 until I come and I will take you in a country like this, in a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18 Do not let Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. The gods of the nations delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria?
19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods Sepharvites? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
20 Of all the gods of the countries, which are the ones that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
21 But they held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king had commanded: Do not answer him.
22 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, head of the royal household, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

These men sit on the wall. The goverment sought to undermine the morale of the people by referring to who wanted to hear the horrors of famine cause a long siege.
36: 13-17 Rabshakeh spoke longer and harder to suggest that Hezekiah was unable to save the city, while the king of Assyria would pour over the people the abundance of his riches (vv 36 #Esa. 16- 17).
36:16
Make peace with me. Literally "made a blessing to me." The envoy invited the people to surrender and make alliance with Assyria.
36:17
I take you in a country. Rabshakeh did not fail to recall the well-known Assyrian consisting deport those they had conquered to distant lands practice.
36: 18-20 In the eyes of Rabshakeh, the Lord was not worth more than the many gods worshiped by the nations conquered by Assyria (cf. #Esa 10: 8-11).
36:21
But they were silent. Hezekiah had clearly anticipated the ultimatum that would inevitably impose the Assyrians, and he ordered his representatives and the sentries on the wall not to react.

clothes torn. The representatives of the king made him their relationship in a state of great sadness, shocked by the profanity they thought they had heard him speak
