1 ¶ Écoutez ceci, maison de Jacob, Vous qui portez le nom d’Israël, Et qui êtes sortis des eaux de Juda ; Vous qui jurez par le nom de l’Éternel, Et qui invoquez le Dieu d’Israël, Mais sans vérité ni droiture !
2 Car ils prennent leur nom de la ville sainte, Et ils s’appuient sur le Dieu d’Israël, Dont le nom est l’Éternel des armées.
3 Dès longtemps j’ai fait les premières prédictions, Elles sont sorties de ma bouche, et je les ai publiées : Soudain j’ai agi, et elles se sont accomplies.
4 Sachant que tu es endurci, Que ton cou est une barre de fer, Et que tu as un front d’airain,
5 Je t’ai annoncé dès longtemps ces choses, je te les ai déclarées avant qu’elles arrivassent, Afin que tu ne dises pas : C’est mon idole qui les a faites, C’est mon image taillée ou mon image en fonte qui les a ordonnées.
6 Tu entends ! Considère tout cela ! Et vous, ne l’avouerez-vous pas ? … Maintenant, je t’annonce des choses nouvelles, Cachées, inconnues de toi.
7 Elles se produisent à présent, et n’appartiennent point au passé ; Jusqu’à leur avènement tu n’en avais aucune connaissance, Afin que tu ne dises pas : Voici, je le savais.
8 Tu n’en as rien appris, tu n’en as rien su, Et jadis ton oreille n’en a point été frappée: Car je savais que tu serais infidèle, Et que dès ta naissance tu fus appelé rebelle.
9 ¶ A cause de mon nom, je suspends ma colère ; A cause de ma gloire, je me contiens envers toi, Pour ne pas t’exterminer.
10 Je t’ai mis au creuset, mais non pour retirer de l’argent ; Je t’ai éprouvé dans la fournaise de l’adversité.
11 C’est pour l’amour de moi, pour l’amour de moi, que je veux agir ; Car comment mon nom serait-il profané ? Je ne donnerai pas ma gloire à un autre.
12 Écoute-moi, Jacob ! Et toi, Israël, que j’ai appelé ! C’est moi, moi qui suis le premier, C’est aussi moi qui suis le dernier.
13 Ma main a fondé la terre, Et ma droite a étendu les cieux : Je les appelle, et aussitôt ils se présentent.
14 Vous tous, assemblez-vous, et écoutez ! Qui d’entre eux a annoncé ces choses ? Celui que l’Éternel aime exécutera sa volonté contre Babylone, Et son bras s’appesantira sur les Chaldéens.
15 Moi, moi, j’ai parlé, et je l’ai appelé ; Je l’ai fait venir, et son œuvre réussira.
16 ¶ Approchez-vous de moi, et écoutez ! Dès le commencement, je n’ai point parlé en cachette, Dès l’origine de ces choses, j’ai été là. Et maintenant, le Seigneur, l’Éternel, m’a envoyé avec son esprit.
17 Ainsi parle l’Éternel, ton rédempteur, le Saint d’Israël : Moi, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, je t’instruis pour ton bien, Je te conduis dans la voie que tu dois suivre.
18 Oh ! si tu étais attentif à mes commandements ! Ton bien-être serait comme un fleuve, Et ton bonheur comme les flots de la mer ;
19 Ta postérité serait comme le sable, Et les fruits de tes entrailles comme les grains de sable ; Ton nom ne serait point effacé, anéanti devant moi.
20 Sortez de Babylone, fuyez du milieu des Chaldéens ! Avec une voix d’allégresse annoncez-le, publiez-le, Faites-le savoir jusqu’à l’extrémité de la terre, Dites : L’Éternel a racheté son serviteur Jacob !
21 Et ils n’auront pas soif dans les déserts où il les conduira : Il fera jaillir pour eux l’eau du rocher, Il fendra le rocher, Et l’eau coulera.
22 Il n’y a point de paix pour les méchants, dit l’Éternel.

48:1-2
jurez par le nom de l’Éternel … sans vérité. Ces Israélites n’avaient d’israélite que le nom, car leur cœur était éloigné de Dieu. Une telle hypocrisie ne fut pas rare au cours de l’histoire d’Israël, et même du temps de Jésus. Cf. #Mt 23: 3, #Mt 23:13-39.
48:3-5 Le Seigneur avait prophétisé des événements qui se déroulèrent comme il l’avait annoncé (#Esa 41:2-4 ; #Esa 46:10), de façon à ce que le peuple n’ait aucun doute sur leur origine et ne les attribue pas à d’autres dieux.
48:3
les premières prédictions. Les auditeurs d’Esaïe étaient invités à se souvenir:
1° de toute la série de prophéties accomplies au cours de l’histoire d’Israël;
2° des délivrances miraculeuses telles que celle qui leur avait permis d’échapper à l’Égypte;
3° des bénédictions providentielles dont Israël avait fait l’expérience.
Tous ces exemples démontraient que l’Éternel seul était Dieu.
48:6
choses nouvelles. Désormais, les prophéties concernant les deux venues du Messie et la restauration d’Israël prennent un sens singulier: Babylone devient la Babylone de l’Apocalypse (v. #Esa 48:20), et Dieu utilise Esaïe pour communiquer par sa bouche les vérités relatives au royaume messianique terrestre ainsi qu’aux nouveaux cieux et à la nouvelle terre (p. ex. #Esa 11:1-5 ; #Esa 65:17). Le v. 7 indique que Dieu n’avait jamais, auparavant, révélé ces éléments de l’avenir.
48:9
A cause de mon nom. Si Dieu soutient Israël (v. #Esa 48:8), ce n’est pas en raison de ses qualités, puisque le peuple élu mérite, en réalité, de subir sa colère. La grâce dont l’Éternel fait preuve envers les Israélites est due à son désir d’être glorifié et de démontrer l’intégrité de son propre nom.
48:10-11
mis au creuset … éprouvé. Depuis l’époque d’Esaïe, les épreuves d’Israël ont inclus la captivité à Babylone et la dispersion actuelle sur toute la surface de la terre, mais sa purification n’est pas encore complète. Dieu maintiendra la pression des afflictions jusqu’à ce que son peuple soit purifié (cf. #Za 13: 1), en veillant toutefois à ce que son nom ne soit pas souillé par sa destruction. Le plan de Dieu exige que lui seul reçoive le crédit du salut d’Israël, sans être supplanté par un homme ni par une idole fabriquée de main d’homme (#Esa 42:8 ; cf. #Ro 11:25-27, #Ro 11:33-36). Les adversaires de Dieu n’auront jamais de motif légitime de se moquer de lui ou de son œuvre.
48:14-15
Celui … son bras … son œuvre. A partir du v. 6, le prophète s’était mis à écrire au sujet de « choses nouvelles »: Babylone y est celle qui existera lors d’#Ap 18, et l’instrument du jugement de Dieu est le Messie. Les divers pronoms renvoient à Jésus-Christ, que le Seigneur oindra pour vaincre l’ultime Babylone lors de son retour; il ramènera Israël sur sa terre et dans son royaume. Il n’est pas question ici de Cyrus, comme le montre clairement l’expression « celui que l’Éternel aime »: elle est trop forte pour pouvoir s’appliquer à ce roi païen, mais parfaitement appropriée, en revanche, pour le bien-aimé Seigneur Jésus.
48:16
m’a envoyé. Ce n’est pas le prophète qui parle ici, mais le Messie, le « serviteur de l’Éternel » que Dieu et le Saint-Esprit enverront effectuer le rassemblement final d’Israël et l’instauration du royaume (décrits en #Esa 61:1-7).
48:17-19 Les châtiments infligés à Israël par le « rédempteur » et le « Saint d’Israël » sont destinés à le discipliner (#Esa 42:18-43:13 ; cf. #Hé 12: 10). Un jour, lorsque le peuple prêtera attention aux commandements du Seigneur, ils prendront fin. Alors les châtiments se changeront en prospérité. Une génération future connaîtra cela et jouira des rafraîchissements du fleuve éternel de la paix et de la justice de Dieu. Il coulera sur elle comme les rouleaux d’une mer éternelle (#Esa 65:18).
48:19
comme les grains de sable. Du fait de la désobéissance d’Israël, la promesse faite par Dieu à Abraham de multiplier ses descendants (#Ge 22: 17) ne s’est pas encore totalement accomplie. Même si le peuple a temporairement été mis à l’écart durant la captivité à Babylone et la diaspora (avant 1948 apr. J.-C.), et même s’il doit encore endurer le « temps d’angoisse pour Jacob » (#Jér 30:7), Dieu sera fidèle à sa promesse.
48:20
Sortez de Babylone. La proclamation mondiale de cette délivrance, accompagnée de la déclaration « l’Éternel a racheté … Jacob », prouve qu’il ne s’agit pas ici du maigre reste de 5000 Juifs revenus de la Babylone historique (la majorité étant restés en terre païenne), mais de la rédemption finale d’Israël dont parlent Zacharie (#Za 12:10-13:1) et Paul (#Ro 11:1-2, #Ro 11:25-27). L’Israël racheté effectuera sa séparation totale d’avec l’ultime Babylone et son système corrompu. Il proclamera au monde entier la grâce du Seigneur envers lui. Jean répète ce commandement en #Ap 18: 4.
48:21
ils n’auront pas soif. Esaïe rappelle la façon miraculeuse dont Dieu a pourvu aux besoins de la génération de Moïse après l’avoir délivrée de l’Égypte (#Ex 17: 6 ; cf. #Esa 41:17-18), pour illustrer la manière dont il pourvoira aux besoins de l’Israël racheté, le jour où celui-ci quittera l’Empire mondial de la dernière Babylone.
48:22
point de paix pour les méchants. Cf. #Esa 57:21. Les Israélites ne seront pas tous au bénéfice du salut, mais seulement les membres du reste fidèle qui se sera détourné de ses mauvaises voies. Les méchants seront chassés avant l’instauration définitive du royaume de paix (cf. #Za 13:7-9).

1 ¶ Hear this, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth the waters of Judah; Who swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness
2 For they call themselves of the holy city, and they rely on the God of Israel, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
3 For a long time I made the first predictions, they went forth out of my mouth, and I showed them: suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.
4 Since thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and you have a brow brass;
5 I announced long ago those things you, I have declared before they came to pass that you should say: This is my idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image who commanded them.
6 You hear! Consider all this! And you, do not you admit it? ... Now I announce new things, Hidden unknown to you.
7 They are created now, and not from the past; Until their arrival you do have any knowledge, that you should say, Behold, I knew.
8 You have not learned anything, as you do not know anything, and once your ear hath not been hit: Because I knew you'd be unfaithful, and from the womb wast called a transgressor.
¶ 9 Because of my name, I defer mine anger, Because of my glory will I refrain for thee, cut thee not off.
10 I will put you to the crucible, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of adversity.
11 For my sake, for my sake, will I do it; For how should my name be polluted? I will not give my glory to another.
12 Listen to me, Jacob! And you, Israel, whom I called! It is I, I am the first, it is also am the last.
13 My hand founded the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: I called them, and immediately they arise.
14 All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear; Who among them has declared these things? That the Lord loves execute his will against Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans.
15 I, I, I have spoken, and I called him; I brought him, and his work will succeed.
16 ¶ Come near to me, and listen! From the beginning I have not spoken in secret from the origin of these things, I've been there. And now the Lord GOD has sent me with his mind.
17 Thus saith the LORD thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, the Lord your God, I teaches you for your own good, I lead you in the way you should go.
18 Oh! If you had listened to my commandments! Your well-being as a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea;
19 And thy seed as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the grains of sand; Your name will be cut off nor destroyed before me.
20 out of Babylon, flee from the Chaldeans! With a voice of singing declare it, publish it, Make it known to the ends of the earth, Say: The Lord hath redeemed his servant Jacob!
21 And they thirsted not in the desert when he led them: He will shoot for them water from the rock, he split the rock, and the waters gushed.
22 There is no peace for the wicked, says the Lord.

48: 1-2
swear by the name of the Lord ... not truth. These Israelites had Israelite as name, because their heart was far from God. Such hypocrisy was not uncommon in the history of Israel, and even the time of Jesus. #Mt Cf. 23: 3, #Mt 23: 13-39.
48: 3-5 The Lord prophesied the events that took place as he had announced (#Esa 41: 2-4; #Esa 46:10), so that the people had no doubt about their origin and do not assign to other gods.
48: 3
early predictions. Listeners were invited Isaiah to remember:
1 of the entire series of prophecies fulfilled in Israel's history;
2. miraculous deliverances such as that allowed them to escape to Egypt;
3. providential blessings which Israel had experienced.
All these examples demonstrate that Jehovah alone was God.
48: 6
new things. Now the prophecies about the two comings of the Messiah and the restoration of Israel take a singular meaning, Babylon is the Babylon of the Apocalypse (v #Esa 48:20.) And Isaiah God uses to communicate with its mouth truths relating to land messianic kingdom and the new heaven and the new earth (eg #Esa 11: 1-5; 65:17 #Esa..). V. 7 indicates that God had never previously revealed these elements of the future.
48: 9
Because of my name. If God supports Israel (v #Esa. 48: 8), it is not because of his qualities, as the chosen people deserve in reality suffer his wrath. The grace which the Lord showed to the Israelites is due to his desire to be glorified and to demonstrate the integrity of its own name.
48: 10-11
put the crucible ... experienced. Since the days of Isaiah, Israel tests included the Babylonian captivity and the current dispersion over the entire surface of the earth, but its purification is not yet complete. God will maintain pressure afflictions until his people to be purified (cf. #Za 13: 1), while ensuring that its name is not sullied by its destruction. God's plan requires that only he gets the credit of Israel's salvation without being supplanted by a man or a man-made idol (#Esa 42: 8; cf. #Ro 11: 25-27, #Ro 11: 33-36). Opponents of God will never have a legitimate reason to make fun of him or his work.
48: 14-15
He ... his arm ... his work. From v. 6, the prophet began to write about "new things" Babylon is one that will exist during '# Rev 18, and the instrument of God's judgment is the Messiah. The various pronouns refer to Jesus Christ, the Lord anoint to defeat the ultimate Babylon on his return; Israel shall he turn on his land and his kingdom. It is not a matter of Cyrus, as clearly shown by the expression "the one the Lord loves" it is too strong to apply to this pagan king, but perfectly appropriate, however, for the good -aimé Lord Jesus.
48:16
sent me. This is not the prophet who speaks here, but the Messiah, the "servant of the Lord" and that God will send the Holy Spirit make the final gathering of Israel and the establishment of the kingdom (described #Esa 61 : 1-7).
48: 17-19 The punishment for Israel by the "Redeemer" and the "Holy One of Israel" are intended to discipline (#Esa 42: 18-43: 13; cf. Heb # 12: 10). One day, when the people will pay attention to the commandments of the Lord, they will cease. Then the punishment will change into prosperity. A future generation will see this and enjoy refreshments from the eternal river of peace and justice of God. It will run on it as the rollers of an eternal sea (#Esa 65:18).
48:19
like grains of sand. Because of Israel's disobedience, the promise God made to Abraham to multiply his descendants (#Ge 22: 17) has not yet fully completed. Although the people was temporarily sidelined during the Babylonian captivity and the Diaspora (before 1948 AD. AD), and although it has yet to endure the "time of Jacob" (# Jer 30: 7), God will be faithful to his promise.
48:20
Get out of Babylon. The global proclamation of this issue, accompanied by the statement "the Lord has redeemed Jacob ..." proves he is not here lean remaining 5,000 Jews income of historical Babylon (the majority of which remained pagan land ), but the final redemption of Israel which speak Zechariah (#Za 12: 10-13: 1) and Paul (#Ro 11: 1-2, #Ro 11: 25-27). Israel redeemed will make his total separation from the ultimate Babylon and his corrupt system. He will proclaim to the world the Lord's grace to him. John repeats this commandment #Ap 18: 4.
48:21
they will not thirst. Isaiah reminds the miraculous way God provided the needs of the generation after Moses delivered from Egypt (#Ex 17: 6; cf. #Esa 41: 17-18), to illustrate the way in which it will provide the needs of the redeemed Israel, the day it will leave the world empire of the last Babylon.
48:22
no peace for the wicked. See #Esa 57:21. The Israelites will not all to the benefit of salvation, but only members who remain faithful will be diverted from their wicked ways. The wicked will be driven out before the final establishment of the kingdom of peace (cf. #Za 13: 7-9).
