1 ¶ Le troisième jour, Esther mit ses vêtements royaux et se présenta dans la cour intérieure de la maison du roi, devant la maison du roi. Le roi était assis sur son trône royal dans la maison royale, en face de l’entrée de la maison.
2 Lorsque le roi vit la reine Esther debout dans la cour, elle trouva grâce à ses yeux ; et le roi tendit à Esther le sceptre d’or qu’il tenait à la main. Esther s’approcha, et toucha le bout du sceptre.
elle trouva grâce. Cela signifiait qu’elle avait d’abord trouvé grâce aux yeux du Dieu d’Israël (cf. #Pr 21: 1).
3 Le roi lui dit : Qu’as-tu, reine Esther, et que demandes-tu ? Quand ce serait la moitié du royaume, elle te serait donnée.
que demandes-tu. Esther ne fit part de son véritable désir qu’en #Est 7:2-3.

la moitié du royaume. Cette hyperbole royale ne devait pas être prise pour argent comptant (cf. #Mr 6:22-23).
4 Esther répondit : Si le roi le trouve bon, que le roi vienne aujourd’hui avec Haman au festin que je lui ai préparé.
au festin. Le premier des deux banquets (cf. vv. #Est 5:4 ; #Est 6:14-7) qu’Esther organisa. Dieu intervint de manière providentielle entre les deux (#Est 6:1-2).
5 Et le roi dit : Allez tout de suite chercher Haman, comme le désire Esther. Le roi se rendit avec Haman au festin qu’avait préparé Esther.
6 Et pendant qu’on buvait le vin, le roi dit à Esther : Quelle est ta demande ? Elle te sera accordée. Que désires-tu ? Quand ce serait la moitié du royaume, tu l’obtiendras.
7 Esther répondit : Voici ce que je demande et ce que je désire.
8 Si j’ai trouvé grâce aux yeux du roi, et s’il plaît au roi d’accorder ma demande et de satisfaire mon désir, que le roi vienne avec Haman au festin que je leur préparerai, et demain je donnerai réponse au roi selon son ordre.
9 ¶ Haman sortit ce jour-là, joyeux et le cœur content. Mais lorsqu’il vit, à la porte du roi, Mardochée qui ne se levait ni ne se remuait devant lui, il fut rempli de colère contre Mardochée.
10 Il sut néanmoins se contenir, et il alla chez lui. Puis il envoya chercher ses amis et Zéresch, sa femme.
11 Haman leur parla de la magnificence de ses richesses, du nombre de ses fils, de tout ce qu’avait fait le roi pour l’élever en dignité, et du rang qu’il lui avait donné au-dessus des chefs et des serviteurs du roi.
du nombre de ses fils. Haman, qui était l’orgueil personnifié (cf. #Pr 16: 18 ; #1Co 10:12 ; #Ga 6:3), eut au moins dix fils (cf. #Est 9:13).
12 Et il ajouta : Je suis même le seul que la reine Esther ait admis avec le roi au festin qu’elle a fait, et je suis encore invité pour demain chez elle avec le roi.
13 Mais tout cela n’est d’aucun prix pour moi aussi longtemps que je verrai Mardochée, le Juif, assis à la porte du roi.
n’est d’aucun prix pour moi. Cela révèle que le désir d’Haman de tuer Mardochée tournait à l’obsession.
14 Zéresch, sa femme, et tous ses amis lui dirent : Qu’on prépare un bois haut de cinquante coudées, et demain matin demande au roi qu’on y pende Mardochée ; puis tu iras joyeux au festin avec le roi. Cet avis plut à Haman, et il fit préparer le bois.
un bois haut. On empalait les criminels soit pour les faire mourir, soit après leur mort (cf. #Est 2:23).
cinquante coudées. Environ 25 m. Le bois était peut-être placé au sommet d’un bâtiment ou d’une muraille, pour atteindre une telle hauteur.

1 ¶ On the third day Esther put on his royal garments and appeared in the inner courtyard of the king's house before the king's house. The king was seated on his royal throne in the royal house, opposite the entrance of the house.
2 When the king saw Queen Esther standing in the courtyard, she found favor in her eyes; And the king held out to Esther the golden scepter which he held in his hand. Esther approached, and touched the end of the scepter.
She found grace. This meant that she had first found grace in the eyes of the God of Israel (cf. # 21: 1).
3 And the king said to him, What is the matter, Queen Esther, and what do you want? When it was half the kingdom, it would be given to you.
What do you ask. Esther expressed her true desire only in Eastern 7: 2-3.

Half of the kingdom. This royal hyperbole should not be taken for cash (see #Mr 6: 22-23).
4 And Esther said, If the king think fit, let the king come with Haman today to the feast that I have prepared for him.
At the feast. The first of the two banquets (see vv. 5: 4; # 6: 14-7) that Esther organized. God intervened providentially between the two (#Est 6: 1-2).
5 And the king said, Go and seek Haman as Esther desired. The king went with Haman to the feast prepared by Esther.
6 And while they were drinking the wine, the king said to Esther, What is your request? It will be granted to you. What do you want? When it is half the kingdom, you will get it.
7 Esther said, This is what I ask and what I desire.
8 If I have found grace in the eyes of the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my request and satisfy my desire, let the king come with Haman to the feast that I will prepare for them, and to-morrow I will give an answer to the king According to his order.
9 ¶ Haman went out that day joyfully and with contentment. But when he saw, at the king's gate, Mordecai, who did not rise or move in front of him, was filled with anger against Mordecai.
10 Nevertheless he was able to restrain himself, and he went to his house. Then he sent for his friends, and Zeresh his wife.
11 Haman spoke to them of the magnificence of his riches, of the number of his sons, of all that the king had done to elevate him to dignity, and of the rank which he had given him over the chiefs and servants of the King.
Of the number of his sons. Haman, who was personified pride (cf. # 16: 18; # 1Co 10:12; #Ga 6: 3), had at least ten sons (cf. #Est 9:13).
12 And he added, "I am the only one whom Queen Esther has admitted with the king to the feast she has made, and I am still invited to-morrow with her at the king's."
13 But all this is of no value to me as long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's door.
Is of no value to me. This reveals that Haman's desire to kill Mordecai turned into obsession.
14 And Zeresh his wife, and all his friends, said unto him, Let a wood be made fifty cubits high, and to morrow ask the king that Mordecai should be hanged there; Then you will go joyfully to the feast with the king. This advice pleased Haman, and he had the wood prepared.
A high wood. The criminals were impaled either to kill them or after their death (cf #Est 2:23).
Fifty cubits. About 25 m. The wood was perhaps placed at the top of a building or wall, to reach such a height.
