1 ¶ L’Éternel dit à Moïse : Va, pars d’ici, toi et le peuple que tu as fait sortir du pays d’Égypte ; monte vers le pays que j’ai juré de donner à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, en disant : Je le donnerai à ta postérité.
2 J’enverrai devant toi un ange, et je chasserai les Cananéens, les Amoréens, les Héthiens, les Phéréziens, les Héviens et les Jébusiens.
33:2-6 Les mauvaises nouvelles incluaient aussi de bonnes nouvelles! L’entrée dans la terre promise interviendrait malgré tout, mais la présence de Dieu sur le trajet leur était retirée. La promesse faite aux patriarches avec serment ne pouvait pas être tout simplement annulée, ce qui était rassurant. Quant à la présence divine au cours du voyage, qui n’était qu’annoncée, elle pouvait être retirée à cause du péché (cf. #Ex 23:20-23). En enlevant leurs bijoux, les Israélites manifestaient leurs profonds regrets. Cela équivalait à se revêtir d’un sac et de cendre.
3 Monte vers ce pays où coulent le lait et le miel. Mais je ne monterai point au milieu de toi, de peur que je ne te consume en chemin, car tu es un peuple au cou roide.
4 Lorsque le peuple eut entendu ces sinistres paroles, il fut dans la désolation, et personne ne mit ses ornements.
5 Et l’Éternel dit à Moïse : Dis aux enfants d’Israël : Vous êtes un peuple au cou roide ; si je montais un seul instant au milieu de toi, je te consumerais. Ôte maintenant tes ornements de dessus toi, et je verrai ce que je te ferai.
6 Les enfants d’Israël se dépouillèrent de leurs ornements, en s’éloignant du mont Horeb.
7 ¶ Moïse prit la tente et la dressa hors du camp, à quelque distance ; il l’appela tente d’assignation ; et tous ceux qui consultaient l’Éternel allaient vers la tente d’assignation, qui était hors du camp.
tente d’assignation. Avant la construction du tabernacle, la tente de Moïse était le lieu où il rencontrait Dieu, l’endroit où ils discutaient « face à face » (v. #Ex 33:11). Le peuple qui regardait de loin était forcément conscient que Dieu avait retiré sa présence.
8 Lorsque Moïse se rendait à la tente, tout le peuple se levait ; chacun se tenait à l’entrée de sa tente, et suivait des yeux Moïse, jusqu’à ce qu’il fût entré dans la tente.
9 Et lorsque Moïse était entré dans la tente, la colonne de nuée descendait et s’arrêtait à l’entrée de la tente, et l’Éternel parlait avec Moïse.
10 Tout le peuple voyait la colonne de nuée qui s’arrêtait à l’entrée de la tente, tout le peuple se levait et se prosternait à l’entrée de sa tente.
11 L’Éternel parlait avec Moïse face à face, comme un homme parle à son ami. Puis Moïse retournait au camp ; mais son jeune serviteur, Josué, fils de Nun, ne sortait pas du milieu de la tente.
12 ¶ Moïse dit à l’Éternel : Voici, tu me dis : Fais monter ce peuple ! Et tu ne me fais pas connaître qui tu enverras avec moi. Cependant, tu as dit : Je te connais par ton nom, et tu as trouvé grâce à mes yeux.
33:12-17 Avec honnêteté et assurance, Moïse assuma à nouveau son rôle d’intercesseur en faveur de la nation qu’il nomma « ton peuple » (vv. #Ex 33:13, #Ex 33:16). Il avait compris que, sans la présence de Dieu, ce peuple ne serait pas distinct des autres, et qu’il ne servirait alors à rien de poursuivre le voyage. L’Éternel lui accorda sa faveur et lui répondit positivement (v. #Ex 33:17).
13 Maintenant, si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, fais-moi connaître tes voies ; alors je te connaîtrai, et je trouverai encore grâce à tes yeux. Considère que cette nation est ton peuple.
14 L’Éternel répondit : Je marcherai moi-même avec toi, et je te donnerai du repos.
15 Moïse lui dit : Si tu ne marches pas toi-même avec nous, ne nous fais point partir d’ici.
16 Comment sera-t-il donc certain que j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, moi et ton peuple ? Ne sera-ce pas quand tu marcheras avec nous, et quand nous serons distingués, moi et ton peuple, de tous les peuples qui sont sur la face de la terre ?
17 L’Éternel dit à Moïse : Je ferai ce que tu me demandes, car tu as trouvé grâce à mes yeux, et je te connais par ton nom.
18 Moïse dit : Fais-moi voir ta gloire !
33:18-23 Des mesures de prudence étaient nécessaires pour que Dieu puisse répondre, même partiellement, à la requête de Moïse qui aspirait à voir encore plus que ce qu’il expérimentait déjà (cf. #No 12: 8). Sans ces mesures, il mourrait. En dépit de la grâce et de la compassion de Dieu, Moïse ne pouvait pas voir sa face et vivre. Quoi qu’il ait vu de la nature de Dieu transformée en lumière flamboyante, il ne le vit que de dos et n’en parla jamais par la suite (cf. #Jn 1:18 ; #1Jn 4:12).
19 L’Éternel répondit : Je ferai passer devant toi toute ma bonté, et je proclamerai devant toi le nom de l’Éternel ; je fais grâce à qui je fais grâce, et miséricorde à qui je fais miséricorde.

20 L’Éternel dit : Tu ne pourras pas voir ma face, car l’homme ne peut me voir et vivre.
21 L’Éternel dit : Voici un lieu près de moi ; tu te tiendras sur le rocher.
22 Quand ma gloire passera, je te mettrai dans un creux du rocher, et je te couvrirai de ma main jusqu’à ce que j’aie passé.
23 Et lorsque je retournerai ma main, tu me verras par derrière, mais ma face ne pourra pas être vue.

1 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, leave here, you and the people you brought out of Egypt; unto the land which I swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, I will give it to your descendants.
2 I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.
33: 2-6 The bad news also included good news! The entrance into the Promised Land would intervene anyway, but the presence of God in the path they had withdrawn. The promise made to the patriarchs oath could not simply be canceled, which was reassuring. As for the divine presence on the journey, which was as announced, she could be removed because of sin (cf. #Ex 23: 20-23). By removing their jewelry, the Israelites showed their deep regret. This amounted to clothe themselves with sackcloth and ashes.
3 Unto a land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go up among you, lest I consume you in the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.
4 When the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments.
5 And the LORD said unto Moses, Say to the Israelites: You are a stiff-necked people; I will come up for a moment in your midst, I and consume you. Now take off your ornaments above you, and I will see what I will do to you.
6 The children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by Mount Horeb.
¶ 7 Moses took the tent and pitched it outside the camp some distance away; he called Tent of Meeting; and all those who sought the LORD went out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.
Tent of Meeting. Before the construction of the tabernacle, the tent was the place where he met God, where they discussed "face to face" (v. #Ex 33:11). The people who looked by far was necessarily aware that God had withdrawn his presence.
8 When Moses went to the tent, all the people rose up, each stood at the entrance of his tent, and looked after Moses, until he entered the tent.
9 When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud descended, and stood at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord talked with Moses.
10 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the entrance of the tent, all the people rose up and worshiped at the entrance of his tent.
11 The LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Then Moses returned to the camp; but his young servant, Joshua son of Nun did not leave the middle of the tent.
12 ¶ And Moses said to the Lord: Behold, you tell me: Bring up this people! And you do not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know you by name, and thou hast found favor in my eyes.
33: 12-17 With honesty and assurance, Moses again assumed its role as intercessor for the nation he called "your people" (vv #Ex 33:13, 33:16 #Ex.). He understood that without the presence of God, the people would not be distinct from the others, and that he then be pointless to continue the journey. The Lord granted him favor and positively answered (v. #Ex 33:17).
13 Now if I have found favor in thy sight, show me now thy way; that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight. That this nation is your people.
14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give you rest.
15 And Moses said: If you do not yourself go with us, do not we leave here.
16 How will it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Will it not in that you go with us, and when we are separated, I and your people of all peoples that are upon the face of the earth?
17 The LORD said to Moses, I will do what you ask, for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know you by name.
18 Moses said, Let me see your glory!
33: 18-23 The prudent measures were necessary for God to respond, even partially, at the request of Moses who aspired to do even more than it already was experimenting (see #No 12: 8). Without these measures, he would die. Despite the grace and compassion of God, Moses could not see His face and live. What he saw of the nature of God transformed into blazing light, he saw that the back and never spoke thereafter (cf. #Jn 1:18; 1 Jn 4:12 #).
19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and will proclaim before you the name of the LORD; I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and show mercy on whom I have mercy.

20 And the Lord said: Thou canst not see my face, for man shall not see me and live.
21 And the Lord said, Behold a place by me; you shall stand on the rock.
22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.
23 And I will take my hand, and thou shalt see my back, but my face shall not be seen
