ÉZÉKIEL 33 : 1 À 9 ***
1 ¶ La parole de l’Eternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:
2 Fils de l’homme, parle aux enfants de ton peuple, et dis-leur : Lorsque je fais venir l’épée sur un pays, et que le peuple du pays prend dans son sein un homme et l’établit comme sentinelle, -
3 si cet homme voit venir l’épée sur le pays, sonne de la trompette, et avertit le peuple ;
4 et si celui qui entend le son de la trompette ne se laisse pas avertir, et que l’épée vienne le surprendre, son sang sera sur sa tête.
5 Il a entendu le son de la trompette, et il ne s’est pas laissé avertir, son sang sera sur lui ; s’il se laisse avertir, il sauvera son âme.
6 Si la sentinelle voit venir l’épée, et ne sonne pas de la trompette ; si le peuple n’est pas averti, et que l’épée vienne enlever à quelqu’un la vie, celui-ci périra à cause de son iniquité, mais je redemanderai son sang à la sentinelle.
7 Et toi, fils de l’homme, je t’ai établi comme sentinelle sur la maison d’Israël. Tu dois écouter la parole qui sort de ma bouche, et les avertir de ma part.
8 Quand je dis au méchant : Méchant, tu mourras ! si tu ne parles pas pour détourner le méchant de sa voie, ce méchant mourra dans son iniquité, et je te redemanderai son sang.
9 Mais si tu avertis le méchant pour le détourner de sa voie, et qu’il ne s’en détourne pas, il mourra dans son iniquité, et toi tu sauveras ton âme.

33:1-33
La parole … me fut adressée. Ch. de transition: on passe du jugement de Dieu contre Jérusalem et contre les nations (ch. #Ez 1:1-32:@) à l’avenir brillant d’Israël lorsqu’il sera restauré et ramené sur sa terre (ch. #Ez 34:1-48:@). Transmettant les instructions de Dieu pour une repentance nationale, ce texte sert de préface aux messages de consolation et de salut qui suivent (ch. #Ez 34:1-39:@).
33:2-20
parle … ton peuple. Ce message visait à préparer les exilés à considérer la calamité qui frappait Jérusalem comme un acte de justice de la part de Dieu (cf. #Ez 14:21-23): il avait fidèlement averti les siens, mais ils n’en avaient pas tenu compte. Ezéchiel avait reçu l’interdiction de parler à son peuple à partir de 24:26-27, et ce jusqu’à la prise de Jérusalem. Entre-temps, il s’était adressé aux autres nations (ch. #Ez 25:1-32:@).
33:2-9
sentinelle. Des hommes tels que Jérémie et Ezéchiel (cf. #Ez 3:16-21) étaient des sentinelles spirituelles (#Ez 33:7-9) chargées d’avertir le peuple de « l’épée » dont Dieu le frapperait, afin de lui donner l’occasion de s’y préparer et de se mettre en sécurité. Le prophète fait une analogie avec la coutume, en vigueur à l’époque, de placer des sentinelles sur les remparts d’une ville pour guetter l’approche d’un ennemi; elles donnaient l’alerte en sonnant de la trompette. 33:4
son sang sera sur sa tête. Une fois que la sentinelle avait accompli son devoir, chacun était responsable de son propre sort. Voir les notes sur le ch. #Ez 18. Chacun est responsable de sa réponse aux avertissements de Dieu: il peut choisir de mourir sous le châtiment ou de vivre comme un homme qui a prêté attention à l’avertissement et s’est repenti. Ezéchiel avait été une « sentinelle » fidèle et obéissante.
33:8-9
je te redemanderai son sang. Si un prophète appelait à la repentance, il échappait au jugement (v. #Ez 33:9). En revanche, celui qui négligeait de transmettre ce message devait en être tenu pour responsable (v. #Ez 33:8). Un prophète portait la responsabilité de son éventuelle infidélité et en était châtié par Dieu. Voir les notes sur le ch. #Ez 18 ; #Ac 20: 26.

2 Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land , and the people of the land take a man from among and make him their watchman , -
3 If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;
4 Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet does not take warning , if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his head.
5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, and he did not take warning , his blood shall be upon him he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul.
6 But if the watchman see the sword come , and blow not the trumpet , and the people are not warned , and the sword comes and take away someone's life , he is taken away in his iniquity but his blood will I require at the watchman .
7 And you, son of man , I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel . Thou shalt hear the word at my mouth , and warn them from me.
8 When I say to the wicked, O wicked man , thou shalt surely die if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity , and I will require his blood .
9 But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he did not turn , he shall die in his iniquity, but thou hast delivered thy soul.

Speech ... came to me . Ch transition : we pass God's judgment against Jerusalem and against the nations ( ch. # Ezekiel 1:1-32 : @ ) to a bright future when Israel will be restored and returned to their land (ch . # Ez 34:1-48 : @ ) . Transmitting God's instructions for national repentance , this text serves as a preface to the messages of consolation and salvation after (ch. # Ez 34:1-39 : @ ) .

talking about ... your people . This message was to prepare the exiles to consider the calamity that struck Jerusalem as an act of justice from God (cf. Ez 14:21-23 # ) : he had faithfully warned his people , but they did not have given . Ezekiel had been forbidden to speak to his people from 24:26-27 , until the capture of Jerusalem . Meanwhile , he was sent to other nations (ch. # Ez 25:1-32 : @ ) .
33:2-9
sentinel. Men such as Jeremiah and Ezekiel (cf. Ez # 3:16-21 ) were spiritual sentinels (# Ez 33:7-9 ) charged to warn the people of the " sword " that God would strike to give him the opportunity to prepare and get to safety . The prophet makes an analogy with the custom in force at the time of placing sentinels on the ramparts of a city to watch the approach of an enemy, they gave warning of trumpeting . About the sentinel function , see # 2S 18:24-25 ; 9:17 # 2R , # Jer 4:5 ; # Jer 6:1 ; # Os 8:1 # Am 3:6 ; # 2 Ha : 1 .
33:4
his blood shall be upon his head. Once the sentinel had done his duty , each was responsible for his own fate . See notes on ch. # 18 Ez . Everyone is responsible for his response to the warnings of God : he can choose to die as punishment or to live as a man who has paid attention to the warning and repented . Ezekiel was a "sentinel" faithful and obedient .
33:8-9
I will require his blood . If a prophet called to repentance , he escaped judgment (v. # Ez 33:9 ) . In contrast, one who neglected to convey this message should be held responsible (see # Ez 33:8 ) . A prophet bore responsibility for possible infidelity and was chastised by God. See notes on ch. Ez # 18; # Acts 20 : 26.
