1 ¶ Lorsque les hommes eurent commencé à se multiplier sur la face de la terre, et que des filles leur furent nées,
Des espérances de vie aussi longues que celles mentionnées au ch. #Ge 5 entraînèrent une énorme augmentation de la population de la terre.
2 les fils de Dieu virent que les filles des hommes étaient belles, et ils en prirent pour femmes parmi toutes celles qu’ils choisirent.
les fils de Dieu virent que les filles des hommes. Les fils de Dieu, considérés ailleurs presque exclusivement comme des anges (#Job 1:6 ; #Job 2:1 ; #Job 38:7), virent des femmes de la race humaine et les prirent pour femmes. Cette union qui n’était pas naturelle violait l’ordre prévu par Dieu pour le mariage et la procréation (#Ge 2:24). Certains soutiennent que ces fils de Dieu étaient des descendants de Seth qui vivaient avec des descendantes de Caïn; d’autres pensent qu’il s’agissait de rois humains désireux d’édifier des harems. Toutefois, le passage insiste sur le contraste entre le monde angélique et la sphère humaine. Le N.T. place ce récit en rapport avec d’autres événements de la Genèse et le considère comme impliquant des anges déchus qui sont entrés dans les hommes. #Mt 22: 30 ne signifie pas nécessairement que les anges soient incapables de procréer, mais qu’ils ne se marient pas. Pour procréer physiquement, ils devaient posséder des corps humains masculins.
3 ¶ Alors l’Éternel dit : Mon esprit ne restera pas à toujours dans l’homme, car l’homme n’est que chair, et ses jours seront de cent vingt ans.
Mon Esprit. Cf. #Ge 1:2. Le Saint-Esprit joue un rôle très actif dans l’A.T. Il y lutte pour appeler les hommes à la repentance et à la justice, en particulier à travers la prédication d’Hénoc et de Noé, comme nous le rapporte l’Écriture (#1Pi 3:20 ; #2P 2:5 ; #Jude 14).
cent vingt ans. Période courant jusqu’au déluge (cf. #1Pi 3:20), pendant laquelle l’homme eut l’occasion de réagir à l’avertissement qui lui était donné à propos des limites de la patience divine.
4 ¶ Les géants étaient sur la terre en ces temps-là, après que les fils de Dieu furent venus vers les filles des hommes, et qu’elles leur eurent donné des enfants : ce sont ces héros qui furent fameux dans l’antiquité.
6:1-4 Le récit qui suit rapporte la dégradation de la vie sur terre et révèle les limites de la patience de Dieu.
géants. La racine du mot nephilim, traduit « géants », signifie « tomber ». Cela indique qu’il s’agissait d’hommes forts qui « tombaient » sur les autres, c’est-à-dire les dominaient (le seul autre emploi de ce terme est dans #No 13: 33). Ils étaient déjà sur la terre lorsque les fameux « héros » naquirent et ne représentent donc pas la progéniture de l’union décrite aux vv. #Ge 6:1-2.
5 L’Éternel vit que la méchanceté des hommes était grande sur la terre, et que toutes les pensées de leur cœur se portaient chaque jour uniquement vers le mal.
les pensées … uniquement vers le mal. C’est l’une des plus fortes et des plus claires affirmations de l’Écriture sur la nature pécheresse de l’homme. Le péché naît dans la pensée. A l’époque de Noé, les hommes étaient extrêmement mauvais, et ce mal provenait de l’intérieur d’eux-mêmes. Cf. #Jér 17:9-10 ; #Mt 12:34-35 ; #Mt 15:18-19 ; #Mr 7:21 ; #Lu 6:45.
6 ¶ L’Éternel se repentit d’avoir fait l’homme sur la terre, et il fut affligé en son cœur.
se repentit … fut affligé. Le péché attriste Dieu, car lui-même est saint et sans tache (#Ep 4:30). Cf. #Ex 32:14 ; #1S 15: 11 ; #Jér 26:3.
7 Et l’Éternel dit : J’exterminerai de la face de la terre l’homme que j’ai créé, depuis l’homme jusqu’au bétail, aux reptiles, et aux oiseaux du ciel ; car je me repens de les avoir faits.
Dieu promit la destruction totale, une fois sa patience épuisée (cf. #Ec 8:11).
8 ¶ Mais Noé trouva grâce aux yeux de l’Éternel.
Noé trouva grâce. Certains pensent que Noé fut épargné uniquement grâce à ses bonnes œuvres (cf. #Hé 11:7). Pourtant, il est clair qu’il croyait dans le Dieu créateur, souverain et seul capable de nous sauver du péché. S’il trouva grâce, c’est parce qu’il s’humilia et rechercha cela (cf. #Ge 4:26). Il fut aussi obéissant (v. #Ge 6:22 ; #Ge 7:5 ; #Ja 4:6-10).
9 Voici la postérité de Noé. Noé était un homme juste et intègre dans son temps ; Noé marchait avec Dieu.

juste et intègre … marchait. Cf. #Ez 14:14, #Ez 14:20 ; #2P 2:5. Les qualités mentionnées suivent un ordre croissant de valeur spirituelle: être « juste », c’est vivre en respectant les normes justes de Dieu; l’« intégrité » met Noé à part, par comparaison avec ses contemporains; le fait qu’il « marchait avec Dieu » le situe dans la même catégorie qu’Hénoc (#Ge 5:24).
10 Noé engendra trois fils : Sem, Cham et Japhet.
11 ¶ La terre était corrompue devant Dieu, la terre était pleine de violence.
corrompue … pleine de violence. Cf. vv. #Ge 6:3, #Ge 6:5. La postérité de Satan, celle des hommes déchus qui avaient rejeté Dieu, qui étaient trompeurs et destructeurs, dominait le monde.
12 Dieu regarda la terre, et voici, elle était corrompue ; car toute chair avait corrompu sa voie sur la terre.
13 ¶ Alors Dieu dit à Noé : La fin de toute chair est arrêtée par devers moi ; car ils ont rempli la terre de violence ; voici, je vais les détruire avec la terre.
je vais les détruire avec la terre. Cette destruction ne signifiait pas un anéantissement total, mais renvoyait plutôt au jugement du déluge, destiné à atteindre à la fois la terre et ses habitants.
14 Fais-toi une arche de bois de gopher ; tu disposeras cette arche en cellules, et tu l’enduiras de poix en dedans et en dehors.
arche. Une caisse creuse, un coffre destiné à flotter sur l’eau (#Ex 2:3).
bois de gopher. Probablement des cèdres ou des cyprès, abondants dans les montagnes d’Arménie.
15 Voici comment tu la feras : l’arche aura trois cents coudées de longueur, cinquante coudées de largeur et trente coudées de hauteur.
16 Tu feras à l’arche une fenêtre, que tu réduiras à une coudée en haut ; tu établiras une porte sur le côté de l’arche ; et tu construiras un étage inférieur, un second et un troisième.
6:15-16 L’arche n’était pas conçue pour être belle ou rapide, mais pour faire preuve de stabilité sur les eaux tumultueuses. Si la coudée est estimée à environ 45 cm, cela donne une longueur de 135 m, une largeur de 22,5 m et une hauteur de 13,5 m. Un coffre aussi gigantesque est très stable sur l’eau et ne peut pas chavirer. Son volume était d’environ 40 000 m3 pour une capacité de transport équivalant à celle de 522 wagons standards, soit 125 000 moutons. Il y avait trois étages; chaque pont était équipé de différentes cellules (littéralement « nids »). La « poix » était une résine assurant l’étanchéité des joints et des fissures du bois.
17 Et moi, je vais faire venir le déluge d’eaux sur la terre, pour détruire toute chair ayant souffle de vie sous le ciel ; tout ce qui est sur la terre périra.

18 Mais j’établis mon alliance avec toi ; tu entreras dans l’arche, toi et tes fils, ta femme et les femmes de tes fils avec toi.
j’établis mon alliance avec toi. Par contraste avec le reste de l’ordre créé, qui allait être détruit, Dieu pourvoirait aux besoins de Noé et de sa famille. De plus, il les protégerait dans le cadre d’une relation d’alliance. C’est la première « alliance » de l’Écriture. Elle est en fait conclue et exposée en #Ge 9:9-17
19 De tout ce qui vit, de toute chair, tu feras entrer dans l’arche deux de chaque espèce, pour les conserver en vie avec toi : il y aura un mâle et une femelle.
20 Des oiseaux selon leur espèce, du bétail selon son espèce, et de tous les reptiles de la terre selon leur espèce, deux de chaque espèce viendront vers toi, pour que tu leur conserves la vie.
6:19-20 Il y a moins de 18 000 espèces sur la terre aujourd’hui. Si nous tenons compte des espèces disparues, il y en avait peut-être le double à l’époque de Noé. Environ 72 000 créatures semblent avoir pris place dans l’arche. L’arche pouvait contenir 125 000 moutons. De plus, la taille moyenne des animaux terrestres est plus petite que celle du mouton, de sorte que moins de 60% du volume devait être utilisé. Les très gros animaux étaient certainement représentés par des jeunes. Il y avait encore suffisamment de place pour le million d’espèces d’insectes et pour les réserves de nourriture d’une année (v. #Ge 6:21).
21 Et toi, prends de tous les aliments que l’on mange, et fais-en une provision auprès de toi, afin qu’ils te servent de nourriture ainsi qu’à eux.
22 ¶ C’est ce que fit Noé : il exécuta tout ce que Dieu lui avait ordonné.

1 ¶ When men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,
Life expectancies as long as those mentioned in ch. #Ge 5 led to a huge increase in the population of the earth.
2 the son of God saw the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took them wives of all which they chose.
the son of God saw the daughters of men. The son of God, also considered almost exclusively as angels (#Job 1: 6; #Job 2: 1; #Job 38: 7), saw women of the human race and took the women. This union was not natural violated the order prescribed by God for marriage and procreation (#Ge 2:24). Some argue that the son of God were the descendants of Seth who lived with descendants of Cain; others think it was human kings eager to build harems. However, passage emphasizes the contrast between the angelic world and the human sphere. The NT up this story in connection with other events of Genesis and consider him involving fallen angels who entered men. #Mt 22: 30 does not necessarily mean that angels are unable to procreate, but they do not marry. To procreate physically, they had to have the male human body.
3 ¶ And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for man is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred twenty.
My Spirit. Cf. #Ge 1: 2. The Holy Spirit plays a very active role in the OT There struggle to call people to repentance and justice, especially through the preaching of Enoch and Noah, as we reported Scripture (1 Peter 3:20 #; # 2P 2: 5; #Jude 14).
hundred and twenty years. Period up flood (cf. 1 Peter 3:20 #) during which the man had a chance to respond to the warning given to him about the limits of God's patience.
¶ 4 There were giants in the earth in those days, after the son of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them: they are the heroes who were famous in antiquity.
6: 1-4 The following story relates the degradation of life on earth and reveals the limits of God's patience.
giants. The root of the Nephilim word translated "giants", meaning "to fall". This indicates that it was strong men who "fell" on the other, that is to say, dominated (the only other use of this term is in #No 13: 33). They were already on the ground when the famous "heroes" were born and does not represent the union of offspring described in vv. #Ge 6: 1-2.
5 The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and all the thoughts of his heart was only evil day.
thoughts ... only evil. This is one of the strongest and clearest scriptural assertions about the sinful nature of man. Sin is born in thought. At the time of Noah, men were very bad, and that evil came from within themselves. # Cf. Jer 17: 9-10; #Mt 12: 34-35; #Mt 15: 18-19; #Mr 7:21; #Lu 6:45.
¶ 6 The LORD repented that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
repented ... grieved. Sin grieves God, for He is holy and unblemished (#EP 4:30). #Ex Cf. 32:14; # 1S 15: 11; # Jer 26: 3.
7 And the LORD said, I will destroy the face of the earth man whom I have created from man to animals, reptiles, and birds of the air; for I repent that I have made them.
God promised total destruction, once exhausted his patience, (see #EC 8:11).
¶ 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Noah found grace. Some think that Noah was spared only because of his good works (cf. Heb # 11: 7). Yet it is clear that he believed in God the Creator, Sovereign alone can save us from sin. If he found grace, it is because he humbled himself and sought it (cf. #Ge 4:26). He was also obedient (v #Ge 6:22; #Ge. 7: 5; #Ja 4: 6-10).
9 These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, Noah walked with God.

fair and honest ... work. See #Ez 14:14 #Ez 2:20 p.m.; 2P # 2: 5. The qualities listed below in order of increasing spiritual value: to be "fair" is the righteous live by God's standards; "integrity" puts Noah apart, compared to his contemporaries; the fact that he "walked with God" places it in the same category Enoch (#Ge 5:24).
10 And Noah begat three son, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
¶ 11 The earth also was corrupt before God, the earth was filled with violence.
corrupt ... full of violence. Vv. #Ge 6: 3 #Ge 6: 5. The seed of Satan, the fallen men who had rejected God, which were misleading and destructive, dominated the world.
12 And God looked upon the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
13 ¶ And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for they have filled the earth with violence; behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
I will destroy them with the earth. This destruction did not mean total annihilation, but rather referred to the judgment of the flood, designed to reach both the earth and its inhabitants.
14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without.
ark. A hollow drum, a hotel designed to float on water (#Ex 2: 3).
gopher wood. Probably cedar or cypress, abundant in the mountains of Armenia.
15 Behold thou shalt make it: the ark shall be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.
16 You shall make a window for the ark, you and in a cubit above; you set the door on the side of the ark; You shall make it with lower, second, and third.
6: 15-16 The ark was not designed to be beautiful or fast, but to demonstrate stability on rough waters. If the elbow is estimated at about 45 cm, this gives a length of 135 m, a width of 22.5 m and a height of 13.5 m. A gigantic trunk is very stable on the water and can not capsize. Its volume was about 40 000 m3 for transit capacity equivalent to that of 522 standard cars or 125,000 sheep. There were three floors; each bridge was equipped with different cells (literally "nests"). The "pitch" was a resin sealing joints and cracks in the wood.
17 And I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life from under heaven; all that is on earth will perish.

18 But I will establish my covenant with you; thou shalt come into the ark, you and your son and your wife and your son women with you.
I establish my covenant with you. In contrast to the rest of the created order, which was to be destroyed, God would supply the needs of Noah and his family. Moreover, it would protect them as part of a covenant relationship. This is the first "alliance" of Scripture. It is actually reached and exposed #Ge 9: 9-17
19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring into the ark two of each species, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.
20 Of fowls after their kind, cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, that thou keep them alive.
6: 19-20 There is less than 18 000 species on the earth today. If we consider the extinct species, there were maybe twice in the time of Noah. Approximately 72,000 creatures seem to have taken place in the ark. The arch could hold 125,000 sheep. In addition, the average size of land animals is smaller than that of sheep, so that less than 60% of the volume was to be used. Very large animals were probably represented by youth. There was still enough room for a million species of insects and for one year supply of food (v. #Ge 6:21).
21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and bring in a supply with you so that they serve food to you and to them.
¶ 22 This is what Noah did according to all that God commanded him.
