10 ¶ Voici la postérité de Sem. Sem, âgé de cent ans, engendra Arpacschad, deux ans après le déluge.
Sem … Abram. La descendance de Sem (v. #Ge 11:10). En écoutant la lecture de ce passage, Israël apprit comment la génération qui survécut au déluge était liée à son propre ancêtre, Abram (v. #Ge 11:26), plus tard connu sous le nom d’Abraham (cf. #Ge 17: 5). L’espérance de vie était déjà plus courte.
11 Sem vécut, après la naissance d’Arpacschad, cinq cents ans ; et il engendra des fils et des filles.
12 Arpacschad, âgé de trente-cinq ans, engendra Schélach.
13 Arpacschad vécut, après la naissance de Schélach, quatre cent trois ans ; et il engendra des fils et des filles.
14 Schélach, âgé de trente ans, engendra Héber.

27 ¶ Voici la postérité de Térach. Térach engendra Abram, Nachor et Haran. — Haran engendra Lot.

Abram. Son nom signifie « père élevé ». Cf. #Ge 17: 5.
28 Et Haran mourut en présence de Térach, son père, au pays de sa naissance, à Ur en Chaldée. —
Ur en Chaldée. Une ville prospère et très peuplée de la Mésopotamie.
29 Abram et Nachor prirent des femmes: le nom de la femme d’Abram était Saraï, et le nom de la femme de Nachor était Milca, fille d’Haran, père de Milca et père de Jisca.
30 Saraï était stérile : elle n’avait point d’enfants.
31 Térach prit Abram, son fils, et Lot, fils d’Haran, fils de son fils, et Saraï, sa belle-fille, femme d’Abram, son fils. Ils sortirent ensemble d’Ur en Chaldée, pour aller au pays de Canaan. Ils vinrent jusqu’à Charan, et ils y habitèrent.

Abram longea l’Euphrate jusqu’à la ville de Charan, un carrefour commercial au nord de la Mésopotamie ou en Syrie; c’était la meilleure route à emprunter pour descendre au pays de Canaan et éviter de traverser le grand désert avec toutes ses populations et ses animaux (voir #Ge 12: 4).
32 Les jours de Térach furent de deux cent cinq ans ; et Térach mourut à Charan.

10 ¶ These are the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood.
Sem ... Abram. The descendants of Shem (v. #Ge 11:10). Listening to the reading of this passage, Israel learned how the generation that survived the flood was linked to his own ancestor, Abram (v. #Ge 11:26), later known as Abraham (cf. #Ge 17 : 5). Life expectancy was already shorter.
11 Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat son and daughters.
12 Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begat Salah.
13 Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years; and begat son and daughters.

22 Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor.
23 Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years; and begat son and daughters.
24 Nahor twenty-nine years, and begat Terah.

26 Terah, aged seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27 ¶ These are the generations of Terah. Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran. - Haran begat Lot.

Abram. Its name means "exalted father". #Ge Cf. 17: 5.
28 And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans. -
Ur of the Chaldeans. A prosperous and populous city of Mesopotamia.
29 Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah, daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.
30 Sarai was barren; she had no children.
31 Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-wife of Abram his son. They went out together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. They came to Haran, and dwelt there.
... Ur to Haran. #AC Cf. 7: 2-4; # Heb 11: 8-10. Abram went along the Euphrates to the city of Haran, a commercial hub in northern Mesopotamia and Syria; it was the best route to go down to the land of Canaan, and avoid crossing the great desert with all its people and animals (see #Ge 12: 4).
32 The days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.
