17 Caïn connut sa femme ; elle conçut, et enfanta Hénoc. Il bâtit ensuite une ville, et il donna à cette ville le nom de son fils Hénoc.
Caïn connut sa femme. La femme de Caïn était de toute évidence l’une des dernières filles d’Adam (#Ge 5:4). A l’époque de Moïse, ce genre de mariage entre proches fut interdit (#Lé 18:7-17), à cause de la dégradation génétique.
Hénoc. Son nom signifie « initié » et symbolisait la nouvelle ville où Caïn tenta d’atténuer sa malédiction.
18 Hénoc engendra Irad, Irad engendra Mehujaël, Mehujaël engendra Metuschaël, et Metuschaël engendra Lémec.
19 ¶ Lémec prit deux femmes : le nom de l’une était Ada, et le nom de l’autre Tsilla.
deux femmes. Aucune raison n’est donnée par Lémec pour justifier ce premier cas de bigamie. Il entraîna la lignée de Caïn dans une rébellion ouverte contre Dieu en violant l’institution du mariage (cf. #Ge 2:24).
20 Ada enfanta Jabal : il fut le père de ceux qui habitent sous des tentes et près des troupeaux.
Jabal. Il inventa les tentes et le style de vie nomade des éleveurs, courant au Moyen-Orient et ailleurs.
21 Le nom de son frère était Jubal : il fut le père de tous ceux qui jouent de la harpe et du chalumeau.
Jubal. Il inventa les instruments à cordes et à vent.
22 Tsilla, de son côté, enfanta Tubal-Caïn, qui forgeait tous les instruments d’airain et de fer. La sœur de Tubal-Caïn était Naama.
Tubal-Caïn. Il inventa la métallurgie.
23 ¶ Lémec dit à ses femmes : Ada et Tsilla, écoutez ma voix ! Femmes de Lémec, écoutez ma parole ! J’ai tué un homme pour ma blessure, Et un jeune homme pour ma meurtrissure.
24 Caïn sera vengé sept fois, Et Lémec soixante-dix-sept fois.
4:23-24 Lémec tua un homme en état de légitime défense. Il affirma à ses femmes qu’elles ne devaient craindre aucunes représailles suite à ce meurtre, car si quelqu’un essayait de se venger, il lui rendrait la pareille et le tuerait. Il interprétait la promesse de Dieu de venger 7 fois l’assassinat éventuel de Caïn comme signifiant qu’il se vengerait 77 fois de celui qui l’attaquerait, lui.
25 ¶ Adam connut encore sa femme ; elle enfanta un fils, et l’appela du nom de Seth, car, dit-elle, Dieu m’a donné un autre fils à la place d’Abel, que Caïn a tué.
Seth. Après le départ de Caïn, qui était l’aîné et l’héritier des bénédictions familiales, et la mort d’Abel, Dieu accorda à Adam et Ève un fils pieux grâce auquel la postérité de la rédemption (#Ge 3:15) pourrait continuer jusqu’à Jésus-Christ (#Lu 3:38).
26 Seth eut aussi un fils, et il l’appela du nom d’Énosch. C’est alors que l’on commença à invoquer le nom de l’Éternel.

17 Cain knew his wife; she conceived and bore Enoch. He then built a city, and he gave this city the name of his son, Enoch.
Cain knew his wife. Cain's wife was obviously one of the last daughters of Adam (#Ge 5: 4). At the time of Moses, that kind of marriage between relatives was forbidden (# Lev 18: 7-17), due to the genetic degradation.
Enoch. Its name means "insider" and symbolized the new city where Cain tried to mitigate his curse.
18 Irad begat Enoch , Irad begat Mehujaël, Mehujaël Metuschaël begat and begat Lamech Metuschaël.
19 ¶ And Lamech took two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
two women. No reason is given by Lamech to justify this first case of bigamy. He led the line of Cain in an open rebellion against God by violating the institution of marriage (cf. #Ge 2:24).
20 Adah bore Jabal: he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have cattle.
Jabal. He invented the tents and the nomadic lifestyle of pastoralists, power in the Middle East and elsewhere.
21 His brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
Jubal. He invented stringed and wind instruments.
22 Zillah, meanwhile bore Tubal-cain, the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
Tubal-Cain. He invented metallurgy.
23 ¶ And Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice! Wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech! I killed a man for wounding me, a young man to my hurt.
24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
4: 23-24 Lamech killed a man in self-defense. He told his women that they should fear retaliation after the murder, because if someone was trying to take revenge, he would return the favor and kill him. He interpreted the promise of God to avenge 7 times the possible murder of Cain to mean he would be revenged 77 times of the one who would attack him.
25 ¶ And Adam knew his wife; she bore a son, and called his name Seth, for she said, God has given me another son instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.
Seth. After the departure of Cain, who was the eldest and heir of family blessings, and the death of Abel, God gave Adam and Eve a pious son through which the seed of redemption (#Ge 3:15) could continue until Jesus Christ (#Lu 3:38).
26 Seth also had a son, and he called his name Enos. It was then that people began to invoke the name of the Lord.
began to invoke the name of the Lord. Becoming aware of their sinfulness and their inability to placate the wrath of God, fully justified in view of their multiple faults, the men turned to him to implore his mercy and grace, in the hope of restored relationships.
