1 ¶ Abraham partit de là pour la contrée du midi ; il s’établit entre Kadès et Schur, et fit un séjour à Guérar.
Guérar. Une ville philistine à la frontière entre la région d’Israël et l’Égypte, à environ 16 km au sud de Gaza.
2 Abraham disait de Sara, sa femme : C’est ma sœur. Abimélec, roi de Guérar, fit enlever Sara.
C’est ma sœur. 25 ans après avoir dû quitter l’Égypte pour avoir menti au sujet de sa femme (#Ge 12:10-20), Abraham recourut au même stratagème.
Abimélec. Le roi qui emmena Sara dans son harem était probablement le père ou grand-père de l’Abimélec rencontré par Isaac.
3 ¶ Alors Dieu apparut en songe à Abimélec pendant la nuit, et lui dit : Voici, tu vas mourir à cause de la femme que tu as enlevée, car elle a un mari.
Dieu apparut en songe. Le Seigneur intervint à nouveau pour protéger Sara, qui s’était faite complice de son mari (v. #Ge 20: 5) pour tromper le roi. Ce dernier défendit avec ferveur son innocence et son intégrité devant Dieu (vv. #Ge 20:4-6) et, en accord avec ses serviteurs, il eut une réaction appropriée de soumission à l’avertissement de Dieu (v. #Ge 20: 8).
4 Abimélec, qui ne s’était point approché d’elle, répondit : Seigneur, ferais-tu périr même une nation juste ?
5 Ne m’a-t-il pas dit : C’est ma sœur ? et elle-même n’a-t-elle pas dit : C’est mon frère ? J’ai agi avec un cœur pur et avec des mains innocentes.
6 Dieu lui dit en songe : Je sais que tu as agi avec un cœur pur ; aussi t’ai-je empêché de pécher contre moi. C’est pourquoi je n’ai pas permis que tu la touchasses.
aussi t’ai-je empêché de pécher. Nonobstant les limitations que Dieu lui avait imposées, Abimélec devait encore rendre Sara pour détourner le jugement.
7 Maintenant, rends la femme de cet homme ; car il est prophète, il priera pour toi, et tu vivras. Mais, si tu ne la rends pas, sache que tu mourras, toi et tout ce qui t’appartient.
il est prophète. Abraham, malgré son mensonge, servit encore d’intermédiaire et d’intercesseur pour Abimélec (cf. vv. #Ge 20:17-18). C’est la première fois que le terme hébreu pour « prophète » est utilisé dans l’Écriture. Il indique ici que Dieu reconnaissait Abraham comme apte à plaider en faveur d’Abimélec auprès de lui. En général cependant, le terme de « prophète » désigne non pas celui qui parle à Dieu au nom d’un homme, mais celui qui parle aux hommes au nom de Dieu.
8 ¶ Abimélec se leva de bon matin, il appela tous ses serviteurs, et leur rapporta toutes ces choses ; et ces gens furent saisis d’une grande frayeur.
9 Abimélec appela aussi Abraham, et lui dit : Qu’est-ce que tu nous as fait ? Et en quoi t’ai-je offensé, que tu aies fait venir sur moi et sur mon royaume un si grand péché ? Tu as commis à mon égard des actes qui ne doivent pas se commettre.
actes qui ne doivent pas se commettre. La confrontation entre Abraham et le roi confirmait la nature affligeante des actes du patriarche. Le prophète de Dieu dut se sentir profondément humilié de devoir être ainsi réprimandé par un roi païen.
10 Et Abimélec dit à Abraham : Quelle intention avais-tu pour agir de la sorte ?
11 Abraham répondit : Je me disais qu’il n’y avait sans doute aucune crainte de Dieu dans ce pays, et que l’on me tuerait à cause de ma femme.
20:11-13 Abraham donna trois raisons à son mensonge:
1° sa supposition, face aux vices horribles de Sodome, que toutes les autres villes, y compris Guérar, n’avaient aucune crainte de Dieu;
2° sa peur de la mort, qu’il considérait comme une circonstance atténuante pour ses actes;
3° le fait que sa femme était aussi sa demi-sœur, ce qui justifiait le mensonge et la dissimulation de leur statut conjugal.
En réalité, Abraham n’aurait pas eu besoin d’en arriver là: Dieu était capable de veiller sur sa sécurité.
12 De plus, il est vrai qu’elle est ma sœur, fille de mon père ; seulement, elle n’est pas fille de ma mère ; et elle est devenue ma femme.
13 Lorsque Dieu me fit errer loin de la maison de mon père, je dis à Sara : Voici la grâce que tu me feras ; dans tous les lieux où nous irons, dis de moi : C’est mon frère.
14 ¶ Abimélec prit des brebis et des bœufs, des serviteurs et des servantes, et les donna à Abraham ; et il lui rendit Sara, sa femme.
15 Abimélec dit : Voici, mon pays est devant toi ; demeure où il te plaira.
16 Et il dit à Sara : Voici, je donne à ton frère mille pièces d’argent ; cela te sera un voile sur les yeux pour tous ceux qui sont avec toi, et auprès de tous tu seras justifiée.
17 Abraham pria Dieu, et Dieu guérit Abimélec, sa femme et ses servantes ; et elles purent enfanter.
18 Car l’Éternel avait frappé de stérilité toute la maison d’Abimélec, à cause de Sara, femme d’Abraham.

1 ¶ And Abraham journeyed from there to the land of the south; he settled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.
Gerar. A Philistine city on the border between the region of Israel and Egypt, about 16 km south of Gaza.
2 Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. Abimelech king of Gerar sent off Sara.
This is my sister. 25 years after being forced to leave Egypt for having lied about his wife (#Ge 12: 10-20), Abraham resorted to the same ploy.
Abimelech. The king, who took Sarah into his harem was probably the father or grandfather of Abimelech met Isaac.
3 ¶ But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said, Behold, thou shalt die because of the woman you have taken, for she has a husband.
God appeared in a dream. The Lord intervened again to protect Sara, who was an accomplice of her husband (v #Ge. 20: 5) to deceive the king. It fervently defended his innocence and integrity before God (vv #Ge. 20: 4-6) and, in agreement with his servants, he had a suitable reaction submission to God's warning (v #Ge 20. : 8).
4 Abimelech, who was near her, and said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?
5 Does he not say, She is my sister? and she herself did she not say: This is my brother? I acted with a pure heart and clean hands.
6 God said to him in a dream, I know that you have done with a pure heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me. That's why I did not let you touch her.
so I kept you from sinning. Notwithstanding the limitations that God had imposed, Abimelech had yet to make Sara to divert judgment.
7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not restore her, know that you will die, you and all that belongs to you.
he is a prophet. Abraham, despite her lie still acted as intermediary and intercessor for Abimelech (cf. vv #Ge. 20: 17-18). This is the first time that the Hebrew term for "prophet" is used in Scripture. It says here that God recognized Abraham as able to advocate for Abimelech to him. In general, however, the term "prophet" denotes not the one who speaks to God on behalf of a man, but one that speaks to people in the name of God.
¶ 8 Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things; and these people were sore afraid.
9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said, What have you done to us? And what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me deeds that should not be committed.
acts that should not be committed. The confrontation between Abraham and King confirmed the distressing nature of the acts of the patriarch. The prophet of God must have felt deeply humiliated to have and be reprimanded by a pagan king.
10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What did you intend to do so?
11 Abraham said, I thought that there was probably no fear of God in this country, and they will kill me because of my wife.
20: 11-13 Abraham gave three reasons for his lie:
1 his supposition, given the horrible vices of Sodom, and all other cities, including Gerar had no fear of God;
2. fear of death, which he considered a mitigating circumstance for his actions;
3. the fact that his wife was also his half-sister, justifying lying and concealing their marital status.
In fact, Abraham did not need to get there: God was able to ensure its security.
12 Furthermore, it is true that she is my sister, my father's daughter; only, it is not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
13 When God caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt make me; in all the places where we go, say of me, He is my brother.
14 ¶ And Abimelech took sheep and oxen, male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham; and restored him Sarah his wife.
15 Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you.
16 And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver; he is to thee a covering of the eyes to all that are with you, and with all you will be justified.
17 Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bore children.
18 For the LORD had wombs of all the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
