JÉRÉMIE 12 : 1 à 17 *** +
 

1 ¶  Tu es trop juste, Éternel, pour que je conteste avec toi ; Je veux néanmoins t’adresser la parole sur tes jugements : Pourquoi la voie des méchants est-elle prospère ? Pourquoi tous les perfides vivent-ils en paix ?

Pourquoi. Le problème de l’impunité temporaire des méchants fut souvent évoqué par le peuple de Dieu (cf. #Ps 73 ; #Ha 1:2-4).

2  Tu les as plantés, ils ont pris racine, Ils croissent, ils portent du fruit ; Tu es près de leur bouche, Mais loin de leur cœur.

3  Et toi, Éternel, tu me connais, Tu me vois, tu sondes mon cœur qui est avec toi. Enlève-les comme des brebis qu’on doit égorger, Et prépare-les pour le jour du carnage !

Enlève-les …  pour le jour du carnage! Le prophète, qui plaidait auparavant avec tristesse pour son peuple, changea de ton et demanda à Dieu de le punir. Cette prière imprécatoire est similaire à celles des Psaumes.

4  Jusques à quand le pays sera-t-il dans le deuil, Et l’herbe de tous les champs sera-t-elle desséchée ? À cause de la méchanceté des habitants, Les bêtes et les oiseaux périssent. Car ils disent : Il ne verra pas notre fin. — 

Il ne verra pas notre fin. Les Judéens estimaient, à tort, que Jérémie se trompait et ne savait pas ce qui allait se passer.

5  Si tu cours avec des piétons et qu’ils te fatiguent, Comment pourras-tu lutter avec des chevaux ? Et si tu ne te crois en sûreté que dans une contrée paisible, Que feras-tu sur les rives orgueilleuses du Jourdain ?

Si tu cours. Le Seigneur répliqua à Jérémie en lui demandant ce qu’il ferait lorsque la bataille se durcirait, s’il fléchissait devant des épreuves moindres et était prêt à abandonner.

les rives orgueilleuses du Jourdain. Quand le fleuve était en crue, il débordait et se répandait dans la plaine, qui était couverte de fourrés. Jérémie avait besoin d’être prêt à faire face à des épreuves plus grandes, évoquées par l’image d’une inondation, ou à faire face à de graves dangers, pareils à ceux que l’on trouvait dans le maquis proche du Jourdain, où vivaient des animaux sauvages susceptibles de terroriser les hommes.

6  Car, tes frères eux-mêmes et la maison de ton père te trahissent, Ils crient eux-mêmes à pleine voix derrière toi. Ne les crois pas, quand ils te diront des paroles amicales.

tes frères eux-mêmes. Jérémie rencontra l’opposition non seulement de ses concitoyens (cf. #Jér 11:18-23), mais de sa propre famille! Il était séparé d’elle (v. #Jér 12:7).

7 ¶  J’ai abandonné ma maison, J’ai délaissé mon héritage, J’ai livré l’objet de mon amour aux mains de ses ennemis.

8  Mon héritage a été pour moi comme un lion dans la forêt, Il a poussé contre moi ses rugissements ; C’est pourquoi je l’ai pris en haine.

comme un lion. Le propre peuple de Jérémie ressemblait à un lion, dans le sens où il manifestait un comportement féroce contre lui.

9  Mon héritage a été pour moi un oiseau de proie, une hyène ; Aussi les oiseaux de proie viendront de tous côtés contre lui. Allez, rassemblez tous les animaux des champs, Faites-les venir pour qu’ils le dévorent !

un oiseau de proie. Le peuple de Dieu, criblé de péchés et de compromis, serait opposé à d’autres vautours, c`est à dire, des nations ennemies.

10  Des bergers nombreux ravagent ma vigne, Ils foulent mon champ ; Ils réduisent le champ de mes délices En un désert, en une solitude.

11  Ils le réduisent en un désert ; Il est en deuil, il est désolé devant moi. Tout le pays est ravagé, Car nul n’y prend garde.

12  Sur tous les lieux élevés du désert arrivent les dévastateurs, Car le glaive de l’Éternel dévore le pays d’un bout à l’autre ; Il n’y a de paix pour aucun homme.

le glaive de l’Éternel. La force de Dieu peut servir à défendre (cf. #Jér 47:6 ; #Jug 7:20) ou, en l’occurrence, à condamner. Les Babyloniens constituaient le bras armé de Dieu pour exécuter sa volonté.

13  Ils ont semé du froment, et ils moissonnent des épines, Ils se sont fatigués sans profit. Ayez honte de ce que vous récoltez, Par suite de la colère ardente de l’Éternel.

14 ¶  Ainsi parle l’Éternel sur tous mes méchants voisins, Qui attaquent l’héritage que j’ai donné à mon peuple d’Israël : Voici, je les arracherai de leur pays, Et j’arracherai la maison de Juda du milieu d’eux.

méchants voisins. D’autres nations qui font du mal à Israël recevront, à leur tour, un châtiment de la part du Seigneur (cf. #Jér 9:26 ; #Jér 25:14-32 ; ch. #Jér 46:1-51:2).

15  Mais après que je les aurai arrachés, J’aurai de nouveau compassion d’eux, Et je les ramènerai chacun dans son héritage, Chacun dans son pays.

je les ramènerai. Dieu restaurera son peuple en le ramenant sur sa terre lors du millénium, comme cela est indiqué, à mon avis, aux ch. #Jér 30:1-33:2.

16  Et s’ils apprennent les voies de mon peuple, S’ils jurent par mon nom, en disant : L’Éternel est vivant ! Comme ils ont enseigné à mon peuple à jurer par Baal, Alors ils jouiront du bonheur au milieu de mon peuple.

17  Mais s’ils n’écoutent rien, Je détruirai une telle nation, Je la détruirai, je la ferai périr, dit l’Éternel.

1 ¶ Thou art too righteous, O LORD, that I may contend with thee; Nevertheless, I want to speak to you about your judgments: Why is the way of the wicked prosperous? Why do all the perfidious live in peace?

Why. The problem of the temporary impunity of the wicked was often evoked by the people of God (see #Ps 73; #Ha 1: 2-4).

2 Thou hast planted them, they have taken root, they grow, they bear fruit; You are near their mouth, but far from their hearts.

3 And thou, O Jehovah, knowest me; thou seest me, and prove my heart which is with thee. Take them away like sheep to be slaughtered, and prepare them for the day of carnage!

Take them away ... for the day of the carnage! The prophet, who previously pleaded with sadness to his people, changed his tone and asked God to punish him. This imprecatory prayer is similar to that of the Psalms.

4 How long shall the land mourn, and the grass of all the fields shall be dried up? Because of the wickedness of the inhabitants, the beasts and the birds perish. For they say, He will not see our end. -

He will not see our end. The Judaeans mistakenly believed that Jeremiah was mistaken and did not know what was going to happen.

5 If you run with pedestrians and tire you, how can you fight with horses? And if you believe in safety only in a peaceful country, what will you do on the proud banks of the Jordan?

If you run. The Lord replied to Jeremiah, asking him what he would do when the battle was hardened, if he yielded to less trials and was ready to give up.

The proud banks of the Jordan. When the river was in flood, it overflowed and spread over the plain, which was covered with thickets. Jeremiah needed to be ready to face greater trials, evoked by the image of a flood, or to face serious dangers, similar to those found in the maquis near the Jordan River, Where lived wild animals likely to terrorize the men.

6 For thy brethren and the house of thy father betray thee, and they cry aloud behind thee. Do not believe them, when they tell you friendly words.

Your brothers themselves. Jeremiah met the opposition not only of his fellow citizens (cf. Jer 11: 18-23), but of his own family! He was separated from her (see Jer. 12: 7).

7 ¶ I have forsaken my house, I have forsaken my inheritance, and have delivered the object of my love into the hand of its enemies.

8 My inheritance has been to me like a lion in the forest, He has grown against me his roaring; That's why I took it in hatred.

Like a lion. Jeremiah's own people resembled a lion, in the sense that he displayed ferocious behavior against him.

9 My inheritance was for me a bird of prey, a hyena; So the birds of prey will come on all sides against him. Go and gather all the beasts of the field, and bring them forth to devour them.

A bird of prey. The people of God, riddled with sins and compromise, would be opposed to other vultures, that is to say, enemy nations.

10 Numerous shepherds ravage my vineyard, They tread my field; They reduce the field of my delights In a desert, in a solitude.

11 They reduce him to a wilderness; He is in mourning, he is sorry before me. The whole country is ravaged, for no one takes heed.

12 In all the high places of the wilderness come the devastation, for the sword of the LORD devours the land from one end to the other; There is no peace for any man.

The sword of the LORD. The strength of God can serve to defend (cf. Jer. 47: 6; #JG 7:20) or, in this case, to condemn. The Babylonians were the arm of God to carry out his will.

13 They have sown wheat, and they reap thorns; they have wearied themselves without profit. Be ashamed of that which ye reap, because of the burning wrath of Jehovah.

14 Thus saith the LORD concerning all my wicked neighbors, that attack the inheritance which I have given to my people Israel: Behold, I will pluck them out of their land, and I will tear the house of Judah from the midst of it. 'them.

Neighbors. Other nations that do evil against Israel will in turn receive punishment from the Lord (Jeremiah 9:26; Jeremiah 25: 14-32; Jer. 46: 1-51: 2).

15 But after I have snatched them away, I will have compassion on them again, and I will bring them every man into his inheritance, every one in his own land.

I will bring them back. God will restore his people by bringing him back to his land at the millennium, as is indicated, in my opinion, in chap. # Jer. 30: 1-33: 2.

16 And if they learn the ways of my people, if they swear by my name, saying, The LORD liveth. As they taught my people to swear by Baal, Then they will enjoy happiness in the midst of my people.

17 But if they hear nothing, I will destroy such a nation; I will destroy it; I will make it perish, saith the LORD.
