1 ¶ Car voici, en ces jours, en ce temps-là, Quand je ramènerai les captifs de Juda et de Jérusalem,
3:1-21 Description de la restauration nationale d’Israël, au cours de laquelle le peuple sera rassemblé dans son pays (#Esa 11:15-16 ; #Mt 24: 31).
2 Je rassemblerai toutes les nations, Et je les ferai descendre dans la vallée de Josaphat ; Là, j’entrerai en jugement avec elles, Au sujet de mon peuple, d’Israël, mon héritage, Qu’elles ont dispersé parmi les nations, Et au sujet de mon pays qu’elles se sont partagé.
rassemblerai toutes les nations. Les nations du monde seront rassemblées à Jérusalem pour la bataille d’Harmaguédon (#Za 12: 3 ; #Za 14: 2 ; #Ap 16: 16 ; #Ap 19: 11-21).
vallée de Josaphat. « Josaphat » signifie « l’Éternel a jugé » (cf. #Joe 3:12, #Joe 3:14), et bien que la localisation exacte de cette vallée soit inconnue, d’autres prophètes ont situé ce jugement à proximité de Jérusalem (#Ez 38:1-39:2 ; #Da 11:45 ; #Za 9:14; #Za 12:1). Le jugement des nations inclut les éléments cités en #Mt 25:31-46.
3 Ils ont tiré mon peuple au sort ; Ils ont donné le jeune garçon pour une prostituée, Ils ont vendu la jeune fille pour du vin, et ils ont bu.
4 Que me voulez-vous, Tyr et Sidon, Et vous tous, districts des Philistins ? Voulez-vous tirer vengeance de moi ? Si vous voulez vous venger, Je ferai bien vite retomber votre vengeance sur vos têtes.
5 Vous avez pris mon argent mon or ; Et ce que j’avais de plus précieux et de plus beau, Vous l’avez emporté dans vos temples.
3:5-6 L’événement historique auquel il est fait allusion ici est incertain. La traite des esclaves était une pratique courante chez les Phéniciens et chez les Philistins.
6 Vous avez vendu les enfants de Juda et de Jérusalem aux enfants de Javan, Afin de les éloigner de leur territoire.
enfants de Javan. Sans être une grande puissance militaire, les Grecs (les « enfants de Javan ») n’en étaient pas moins très présents dans les relations commerciales en Méditerranée au IXe siècle av. J.-C.
7 Voici, je les ferai revenir du lieu où vous les avez vendus, Et je ferai retomber votre vengeance sur vos têtes.
3:7-8 Le revirement de situation sera très surprenant: les victimes elles-mêmes seront appelées à servir d’instruments de vengeance pour la colère de l’Éternel (cf. #Esa 11:12-14 ; #Za 12:8).
8 Je vendrai vos fils et vos filles aux enfants de Juda, Et ils les vendront aux Sabéens, nation lointaine ; Car l’Éternel a parlé.
Sabéens. Négociants maritimes qui vivaient en Arabie (#1R 10 ; #Jér 6:20).
9 ¶ Publiez ces choses parmi les nations ! Préparez la guerre ! Réveillez les héros ! Qu’ils s’approchent, qu’ils montent, Tous les hommes de guerre !
3:9-17 Reprise du thème des vv. 1-3: le rassemblement des nations dans le tribunal terrestre, la vallée de Josaphat. Après avoir rendu son verdict, le juge ordonnera à ses agents de préparer son exécution.
10 De vos hoyaux forgez des épées, Et de vos serpes des lances ! Que le faible dise : Je suis fort !
11 Hâtez-vous et venez, vous toutes, nations d’alentour, Et rassemblez-vous ! Là, ô Éternel, fais descendre tes héros !
12 Que les nations se réveillent, et qu’elles montent Vers la vallée de Josaphat ! Car là je siégerai pour juger toutes les nations d’alentour.
13 Saisissez la faucille, Car la moisson est mûre ! Venez, foulez, Car le pressoir est plein, Les cuves regorgent ! Car grande est leur méchanceté,
14 C’est une multitude, une multitude, Dans la vallée du jugement ; Car le jour de l’Éternel est proche, Dans la vallée du jugement.
la vallée du jugement. Même site que la vallée de Josaphat, où seront exécutées les décisions du tribunal (cf. vv. #Joe 3:2, #Joe 3:12).
15 Le soleil et la lune s’obscurcissent, Et les étoiles retirent leur éclat.
3:15-16
Le soleil et la lune. Cf. #Joe 2:10, #Joe 2:30-31. Il s’agit des signes qui précèdent le jour de l’Éternel eschatologique, à la fin de la grande tribulation (cf. #Mt 24:29-30).
16 De Sion l’Éternel rugit, De Jérusalem il fait entendre sa voix ; Les cieux et la terre sont ébranlés. Mais l’Éternel est un refuge pour son peuple, Un abri pour les enfants d’Israël.
17 Et vous saurez que je suis l’Éternel, votre Dieu, Résidant à Sion, ma sainte montagne. Jérusalem sera sainte, Et les étrangers n’y passeront plus.
Sion, ma sainte montagne. Elle sera la résidence terrestre de Dieu, avec le temple du millénium (cf. #Ez 40:1-48:2) érigé à Jérusalem.
les étrangers n’y passeront plus. Dieu promit un temps où sa gloire ne connaîtrait aucune éclipse en Juda. Ce temps de paix et de prospérité surviendra après la conquête du monde par Christ et après l’établissement de son royaume millénaire sur la terre (cf. #Ez 37: 24-28 ; #Mt 24: 1-25: 2 ; #Ap 19).
18 ¶ En ce temps-là, le moût ruissellera des montagnes, Le lait coulera des collines, Et il y aura de l’eau dans tous les torrents de Juda ; Une source sortira aussi de la maison de l’Éternel, Et arrosera la vallée de Sittim.
la vallée de Sittim. Célèbre pour ses acacias, cette vallée était située sur la rive nord de la mer Morte et avait constitué la dernière étape avant l’entrée d’Israël dans le pays promis (#No 25:1 ; #Jos 2:1 ; #Jos 3:1). C’est aussi dans cette vallée que le fleuve du millénium coulera (#Ez 47:1-12 ; #Za 14: 8).
19 L’Égypte sera dévastée, Édom sera réduit en désert, À cause des violences contre les enfants de Juda, Dont ils ont répandu le sang innocent dans leur pays.
20 Mais Juda sera toujours habité, Et Jérusalem, de génération en génération.
Juda sera toujours habité. Allusion au règne millénaire de Christ sur la terre, encore à venir.
21 Je vengerai leur sang que je n’ai point encore vengé, Et L’Éternel résidera dans Sion.

1 ¶ For behold, in those days, in that time, When I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem,
3: 1-21 Description of the national restoration of Israel, during which the people will be gathered in his country (#Esa 11: 15-16; #Mt 24: 31).
2 I will gather all nations and bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat; I will enter into judgment with them there for my people Israel my inheritance, whom they have scattered among the nations, and about my country that they have shared.
gather all nations. The nations of the world will be gathered in Jerusalem for the battle of Armageddon (#Za 12: 3; #Za 14: 2; #Ap 16: 16; #Ap 19: 11-21).
Valley of Jehoshaphat. "Jehoshaphat" means "Jehovah found" (cf. #Joe 3:12 #Joe 3:14), and although the exact location of this valley is unknown, other prophets located near this judgment Jerusalem (#Ez 38: 1-39: 2; 11:45 #Da; #Za 9:14; #Za 12: 1). The judgment of the nations includes the elements listed in #Mt 25: 31-46.
3 They drew lots for my people; They have given a boy for a prostitute, and sold a girl for wine, and they drank.
4 What do you want me, Tyre and Sidon and all the regions of the Philistines? Want to avenge me? If you want revenge, I will soon return your repayment on your heads.
5 You took my silver and my gold; And I had more precious and more beautiful, you have carried into your temples.
3: 5-6 The historic event which is alluded to here is uncertain. The slave trade was a common practice among the Phoenicians and the Philistines.
6 You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks, might remove them far from their territory.
sons of Javan. Without being a great military power, the Greeks (the "sons of Javan") were not very least present in trade in the Mediterranean in the ninth century BC. J.-C.
7 Behold, I will stir them to the place where you have sold them, and will return your repayment on your heads.
3: 7-8 The turnaround will be very surprising: the victims themselves will be called to serve as instruments of revenge for the wrath of the Lord (cf. #Esa 11: 12-14; #Za 12: 8 ).
8 I will sell your son and your daughters to the children of Judah, and they will sell them to the Sabeans, a nation far off; For the LORD has spoken.
Sabeans. maritime traders who lived in Arabia (1R # 10; # Jer 6:20).
9 ¶ Proclaim this among the nations! Prepare war Wake up the mighty They approach, they go up, all the men of war!
3: 9-17 Resuming the theme of vv. 1-3: the gathering of the nations in the earthly court, the Valley of Jehoshaphat. After rendering its verdict, the judge will order his officers to prepare its implementation.
10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears; Let the weak say I am strong!
11 Hurry and come, all ye nations round about, and gather yourselves together! There, O Lord, send down your hero!
12 Let the nations be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat For there will I sit to judge all the surrounding nations.
13 Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe! Come, tread, for the press is full, the vats overflow; For their wickedness is great,
14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision; For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.
the valley of decision. Same site as the Valley of Jehoshaphat, which will be executed court decisions (cf. vv #Joe. 3: 2, 3:12 #Joe).
15 The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.
3: 15-16
The sun and the moon. See #Joe 2:10 #Joe 2: 30-31. These are the signs that precede the day of the eschatological Lord at the end of the great tribulation (cf. #Mt 24: 29-30).
16 In Zion the LORD roars from Jerusalem made his voice heard; The heavens and the earth shake. But the LORD is a refuge for his people, a stronghold to the children of Israel.
17 And you shall know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain. Jerusalem be holy, and no strangers will pass more.
Zion, my holy mountain. It will be the earthly residence of God, the temple of the millennium (cf. #Ez 40: 1-48: 2) erected in Jerusalem.
no strangers pass through more. God promised a time when His glory would know no eclipse in Judah. This time of peace and prosperity will occur after the conquest of the world by Christ and after the establishment of his millennial kingdom on earth (cf. #Ez 37: 24-28; #Mt 24: 1-25: 2; #Ap 19).
18 ¶ In that time, the wine will drip from the mountains, milk will flow from the hills, and there will be water in all the rivers of Judah; A fountain shall come forth from the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.
the valley of Shittim. Famous for its acacias, this valley was located on the north shore of the Dead Sea and had been the last step before the entry of Israel into the promised land (#No 25: 1; #Jos 2: 1; 3 #Jos : 1). It is in this valley that the river flow of the millennium (#Ez 47: 1-12; #Za 14: 8).
19 Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, Because of violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
20 But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
Judah shall dwell for ever. Referring to the millennial reign of Christ on earth, yet to come.
21 I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the LORD dwelleth in Zion.
