1 ¶ Les chefs de famille des Lévites s’approchèrent du sacrificateur Eléazar, de Josué, fils de Nun, et des chefs de famille des tribus des enfants d’Israël.
21:1-3
villes pour habitation. Dieu avait ordonné à Moïse de donner aux Lévites 48 villes dispersées sur tout le territoire d’Israël (#No 35:1-8). Six d’entre elles devaient être des villes de refuge (#No 35:6).
2 Ils leur parlèrent à Silo, dans le pays de Canaan, et dirent : L’Éternel a ordonné par Moïse qu’on nous donnât des villes pour habitation, et leurs banlieues pour notre bétail.
3 Les enfants d’Israël donnèrent alors aux Lévites, sur leur héritage, les villes suivantes et leurs banlieues, d’après l’ordre de l’Éternel.
21:3-42
Les enfants d’Israël donnèrent alors aux Lévites. Ces 48 villes et leurs alentours (des pâturages, versets 41-42) étaient destinées aux divers groupes familiaux des Lévites. Ce seraient des lieux d’où ils pourraient de façon privilégiée exercer leur ministère spirituel auprès de la population. On procéda avec équité, puisque les grandes tribus leur cédèrent plus de territoire que les petites (#No 35:8). Seuls les Kehathites étaient des sacrificateurs; les autres clans assumaient diverses responsabilités en rapport avec le culte et les travaux manuels.
4 On tira le sort pour les familles des Kehathites ; et les Lévites, fils du sacrificateur Aaron, eurent par le sort treize villes de la tribu de Juda, de la tribu de Siméon et de la tribu de Benjamin ;
Kehathites. Sous la sage direction de Dieu, ils reçurent 13 villes proches de Jérusalem ou situées à une distance raisonnable de cette ville, sur les territoires de Juda, Benjamin et Siméon. Cela leur permettrait, plus tard, d’exercer leurs fonctions sacerdotales à l’endroit où l’arche serait amenée et le temple construit (#2S 6).
5 les autres fils de Kehath eurent par le sort dix villes des familles de la tribu d’Éphraïm, de la tribu de Dan et de la demi-tribu de Manassé.
6 Les fils de Guerschon eurent par le sort treize villes des familles de la tribu d’Issacar, de la tribu d’Aser, de la tribu de Nephthali et de la demi-tribu de Manassé en Basan.
7 Les fils de Merari, selon leurs familles, eurent douze villes de la tribu de Ruben, de la tribu de Gad et de la tribu de Zabulon.
8 Les enfants d’Israël donnèrent aux Lévites, par le sort, ces villes et leurs banlieues, comme l’Éternel l’avait ordonné par Moïse.
9 ¶ Ils donnèrent de la tribu des fils de Juda et de la tribu des fils de Siméon les villes qui vont être nominativement désignées,
10 et qui furent pour les fils d’Aaron d’entre les familles des Kehathites et des fils de Lévi, car le sort les avait indiqués les premiers.
11 Ils leur donnèrent Kirjath-Arba, qui est Hébron, dans la montagne de Juda, et la banlieue qui l’entoure : Arba était le père d’Anak.
12 Le territoire de la ville et ses villages furent accordés à Caleb, fils de Jephunné, pour sa possession.
13 Ils donnèrent donc aux fils du sacrificateur Aaron la ville de refuge pour les meurtriers, Hébron et sa banlieue, Libna et sa banlieue,
14 Jatthir et sa banlieue, Eschthemoa et sa banlieue,
15 Holon et sa banlieue, Debir et sa banlieue,
16 Aïn et sa banlieue, Jutta et sa banlieue, et Beth-Schémesch et sa banlieue, neuf villes de ces deux tribus ;
17 et de la tribu de Benjamin, Gabaon et sa banlieue, Guéba et sa banlieue,
18 Anathoth et sa banlieue, et Almon et sa banlieue, quatre villes.
19 Total des villes des sacrificateurs, fils d’Aaron : treize villes, et leurs banlieues.
20 Les Lévites appartenant aux familles des autres fils de Kehath eurent par le sort des villes de la tribu d’Éphraïm.
21 On leur donna la ville de refuge pour les meurtriers, Sichem et sa banlieue, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, Guézer et sa banlieue,
22 Kibtsaïm et sa banlieue, et Beth-Horon et sa banlieue, quatre villes ;
23 de la tribu de Dan, Eltheké et sa banlieue, Guibbethon et sa banlieue,
24 Ajalon et sa banlieue, et Gath-Rimmon et sa banlieue, quatre villes ;
25 et de la demi-tribu de Manassé, Thaanac et sa banlieue, et Gath-Rimmon et sa banlieue, deux villes.
26 Total des villes : dix, et leurs banlieues, pour les familles des autres fils de Kehath.
27 On donna aux fils de Guerschon, d’entre les familles des Lévites : de la demi-tribu de Manassé, la ville de refuge pour les meurtriers, Golan en Basan et sa banlieue, et Beeschthra et sa banlieue, deux villes ;
28 de la tribu d’Issacar, Kischjon et sa banlieue, Dabrath et sa banlieue,
29 Jarmuth et sa banlieue, et En-Gannim et sa banlieue, quatre villes ;
30 de la tribu d’Aser, Mischeal et sa banlieue, Abdon et sa banlieue,
31 Helkath et sa banlieue, et Rehob et sa banlieue, quatre villes ;
32 et de la tribu de Nephthali, la ville de refuge pour les meurtriers, Kédesch en Galilée et sa banlieue, Hammoth-Dor et sa banlieue, et Karthan et sa banlieue, trois villes.
33 Total des villes des Guerschonites, selon leurs familles : treize villes et leurs banlieues.
34 On donna au reste des Lévites, qui appartenaient aux familles des fils de Merari : de la tribu de Zabulon, Jokneam et sa banlieue, Kartha et sa banlieue,
35 Dimna et sa banlieue, et Nahalal et sa banlieue, quatre villes ;
36 de la tribu de Ruben, Betser et sa banlieue, Jahtsa et sa banlieue,
37 Kedémoth et sa banlieue, et Méphaath et sa banlieue, quatre villes ;
38 et de la tribu de Gad, la ville de refuge pour les meurtriers, Ramoth en Galaad et sa banlieue, Mahanaïm et sa banlieue,
39 Hesbon et sa banlieue, et Jaezer et sa banlieue, en tout quatre villes.
40 Total des villes qui échurent par le sort aux fils de Merari, selon leurs familles, formant le reste des familles des Lévites : douze villes.
41 Total des villes des Lévites au milieu des propriétés des enfants d’Israël : quarante-huit villes, et leurs banlieues.
42 Chacune de ces villes avait sa banlieue qui l’entourait ; il en était de même pour toutes ces villes.
43 ¶ C’est ainsi que l’Éternel donna à Israël tout le pays qu’il avait juré de donner à leurs pères ; ils en prirent possession et s’y établirent.
21:43-45
C’est ainsi que l’Éternel donna à Israël tout le pays. Ce verset relève de façon concise l’accomplissement de la promesse que Dieu avait faite, lors de son alliance avec Abraham, de donner ce pays au peuple issu de lui (#Ge 12:7 ; #Jos 1:2, #Jos 1:5-9). Il avait aussi tenu parole en accordant du repos au peuple (#De 12:9-10). Il était juste de considérer que les Cananéens avaient été mis en échec et soumis militairement, comme Dieu en avait fait le serment (#Jos 1:5), et qu’ils ne représentaient plus, dans l’immédiat, une menace. Cependant, les ennemis n’avaient pas tous été chassés, et certains allaient causer des troubles plus tard. Le peuple de Dieu faillit à ses responsabilités et ne prit pas pleinement possession de plusieurs régions de son pays.
44 L’Éternel leur accorda du repos tout alentour, comme il l’avait juré à leurs pères ; aucun de leurs ennemis ne put leur résister, et l’Éternel les livra tous entre leurs mains.
45 De toutes les bonnes paroles que l’Éternel avait dites à la maison d’Israël, aucune ne resta sans effet : toutes s’accomplirent.

1 ¶ The family heads of the Levites approached the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of families of the tribes of Israel.

cities to dwell. God commanded Moses to give to the Levites 48 cities scattered throughout the territory of Israel (#No 35: 1-8). Six of them were to be cities of refuge (#No 35: 6).
2 They spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us cities to dwell in, and their suburbs for our cattle.
3 The children of Israel gave to the Levites out of their inheritance, these cities and their suburbs, according to the commandment of the LORD.
21: 3-42
The children of Israel gave to the Levites. 48 These cities and their surroundings (pasture, verses 41-42) were for various family groups of the Levites. It would be places where they could exercise their privileged way of spiritual ministry to the people. They proceeded fairly, since large tribes ceded their territory more than small (#No 35: 8). Only the Kohathites were priests; other clans assumed various responsibilities in relation to the cult and handicrafts.
4 the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites and the Levites, son of Aaron the priest received by lot thirteen cities of the tribe of Judah, the tribe of Simeon and the tribe of Benjamin;
Kohathites. Under the wise guidance of God, they received 13 towns close to Jerusalem or within reasonable distance of this city, on Judah's territory, Benjamin and Simeon. This would allow them later to perform their priestly duties at the place where the ark would be led and built the temple (2S # 6).
5 other son of Kohath had by lot ten cities of the families of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan and the half tribe of Manasseh.
6 The son of Gershon had by lot thirteen cities of the families of the tribe of Issachar, of the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtali and the half tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
7 The son of Merari according to their families had twelve cities from the tribe of Reuben, from the tribe of Gad and Zebulun.
8 The children of Israel gave to the Levites by lot these cities and their suburbs, as the LORD commanded Moses.
9 ¶ And they gave from the tribe of Judah and son of the tribe of the son of Simeon these cities which are mentioned by name,
10 and who were for the son of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites and the son of Levi, for the lot fell to them first.
11 They gave them Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron, in the mountains of Judah, and the suburbs surrounding Arba was the father of Anak.
12 The territory of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh for his possession.
13 Thus they gave to the son of Aaron the priest the city of refuge for the slayer, Hebron and its suburbs, and Libnah and its suburbs,
14 Jattir with its suburbs, Eshtemoa with its suburbs,
15 Holon and its suburbs, Debir and its suburbs,
16 Ain and its suburbs, Juttah with its suburbs, and Beth Shemesh and its suburbs; nine cities from these two tribes;
17 and of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon and its suburbs, Geba and its suburbs,
18 Anathoth and its suburbs, and Almon and its suburbs; four cities.
19 All the cities of the priests, Aaron's son thirteen cities and their suburbs.
20 And the Levites of the families other son of Kohath had by lot out of the cities of the tribe of Ephraim.
21 And they gave them the city of refuge for the slayer, Shechem and its suburbs in mount Ephraim, Gezer and its suburbs,
22 Kibzaim and its suburbs, and Beth Horon with its suburbs, four cities;
23 of the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh and its suburbs, Gibbethon and its suburbs,
24 Aijalon and its suburbs, and Gath-Rimmon and its suburbs: four cities;
25 and the half tribe of Manasseh, Tanach with her suburbs, and Gathrimmon with her suburbs; two cities.
26 All the cities were ten with their suburbs for the families of the son of Kohath.
27 And unto the son of Gershon, of the families of the Levites: of the half tribe of Manasseh, the city of refuge for the slayer, Golan in Bashan and its suburbs, and Beeshterah and its suburbs, two cities;
28 of the tribe of Issachar Kischjon and its suburbs, Daberath and its suburbs,
29 Jarmuth and its suburbs, Engannim and its suburbs, four cities;
30 of the tribe of Asher, Mishal and its suburbs, Abdon and its suburbs,
31 Helkath and its suburbs, and Rehob and its suburbs: four cities;
32 and of the tribe of Naphtali, the city of refuge for the slayer, Kedesh in Galilee and its suburbs, Hammothdor and its suburbs, and Kartan and its suburbs: three cities.
33 All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities and their suburbs.
34 Unto the rest of the Levites, that the families of the son of Merari of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam and its suburbs, Kartah and its suburbs,
35 Dimnah and its suburbs, Nahalal and its suburbs: four cities;
36 of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer and its suburbs, and Jahzah and its suburbs,
37 Kedemoth and its suburbs, and Mephaath and its suburbs: four cities;
38 and of the tribe of Gad, the city of refuge for the slayer, Ramoth in Gilead and its suburbs, and Mahanaim and its suburbs,
39 Heshbon and its suburbs, Jazer and its suburbs: four cities in all.
40 All the cities that fell due by lot to the son of Merari, by their families, which remained of the families of the Levites twelve cities.
41 All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs.
42 Each of these cities had its suburbs round; it was the same for all these cities.
43 ¶ So the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he swore to their fathers; they possessed it, and dwelt therein.
21: 43-45
Thus the Lord gave unto Israel all the land. This verse points concisely the fulfillment of the promise which God had made during his covenant with Abraham to give this country the people descended from him (#Ge 12: 7; #Jos 1: 2, 1 #Jos: 5-9). He also kept his word by giving rest to the people (# of 12: 9-10). It was right to consider that the Canaanites had been defeated militarily and subjected, as God had sworn (#Jos 1: 5), and that they represented more in the immediate future, a threat. However, the enemy had not all been expelled, and some were later cause problems. The people of God fails in its responsibilities and did not take full possession of several regions of the country.
44 The LORD gave them rest round about, as he had sworn to their fathers; none of their enemies could withstand them, and the Lord gave them all into their hands.
45 Of all the good things which the Lord had spoken unto the house of Israel, no failed not ought all came to pass.
