JOSUÉ 8 : 1 à 35 *** +
1 ¶ L’Éternel dit à Josué : Ne crains point, et ne t’effraie point ! Prends avec toi tous les gens de guerre, lève-toi, monte contre Aï. Vois, je livre entre tes mains le roi d’Aï et son peuple, sa ville et son pays.
2 Tu traiteras Aï et son roi comme tu as traité Jéricho et son roi ; seulement vous garderez pour vous le butin et le bétail. Place une embuscade derrière la ville.
3 ¶ Josué se leva avec tous les gens de guerre, pour monter contre Aï. Il choisit trente mille vaillants hommes, qu’il fit partir de nuit,
trente mille … hommes. Le corps d’élite de Josué était bien plus nombreux que l’armée d’Aï, avec sa population totale de 12 000 habitants (verset #Jos 8:25). Il ne fit pas preuve de présomption et ne se contenta pas, cette fois-là, d’une petite armée (cf. #Jos 7:3-4). Outre les 30 000 hommes chargés de piller et brûler la ville, il destina un deuxième groupe à servir d’appât pour tromper les défenseurs (versets #Jos 8:5-6) et un troisième détachement d’environ 5000 hommes à empêcher les habitants de Béthel de venir à la rescousse de leurs voisins (verset #Jos 8:12).
4 et auxquels il donna cet ordre : Écoutez, vous vous mettrez en embuscade derrière la ville ; ne vous éloignez pas beaucoup de la ville, et soyez tous prêts.
5 Mais moi et tout le peuple qui est avec moi, nous nous approcherons de la ville. Et quand ils sortiront à notre rencontre, comme la première fois, nous prendrons la fuite devant eux.
6 Ils nous poursuivront jusqu’à ce que nous les ayons attirés loin de la ville, car ils diront : Ils fuient devant nous, comme la première fois ! Et nous fuirons devant eux.
7 Vous sortirez alors de l’embuscade, et vous vous emparerez de la ville, et l’Éternel, votre Dieu, la livrera entre vos mains.
l’Éternel … la livrera entre vos mains. Dieu avait souverainement provoqué la défaite d’Israël en raison de la désobéissance d’Acan (#Jos 7:1-5). Cette fois encore et indépendamment du nombre de soldats engagés, c’était à nouveau lui qui, dans sa puissance souveraine, accordait la victoire.
8 Quand vous aurez pris la ville, vous y mettrez le feu, vous agirez comme l’Éternel l’a dit : c’est l’ordre que je vous donne.
9 Josué les fit partir, et ils allèrent se placer en embuscade entre Béthel et Aï, à l’occident d’Aï. Mais Josué passa cette nuit-là au milieu du peuple.
10 Josué se leva de bon matin, passa le peuple en revue, et marcha contre Aï, à la tête du peuple, lui et les anciens d’Israël.
11 Tous les gens de guerre qui étaient avec lui montèrent et s’approchèrent ; lorsqu’ils furent arrivés en face de la ville, ils campèrent au nord d’Aï, dont ils étaient séparés par la vallée.
12 Josué prit environ cinq mille hommes, et les mit en embuscade entre Béthel et Aï, à l’occident de la ville.
13 Après que tout le camp eut pris position au nord de la ville, et l’embuscade à l’occident de la ville, Josué s’avança cette nuit-là au milieu de la vallée.
14 Lorsque le roi d’Aï vit cela, les gens d’Aï se levèrent en hâte de bon matin, et sortirent à la rencontre d’Israël, pour le combattre. Le roi se dirigea, avec tout son peuple, vers un lieu fixé, du côté de la plaine, et il ne savait pas qu’il y avait derrière la ville une embuscade contre lui.
15 Josué et tout Israël feignirent d’être battus devant eux, et ils s’enfuirent par le chemin du désert.
16 Alors tout le peuple qui était dans la ville s’assembla pour se mettre à leur poursuite. Ils poursuivirent Josué, et ils furent attirés loin de la ville.
17 Il n’y eut dans Aï et dans Béthel pas un homme qui ne sortît contre Israël. Ils laissèrent la ville ouverte, et poursuivirent Israël.
18 L’Éternel dit à Josué : Étends vers Aï le javelot que tu as à la main, car je vais la livrer en ton pouvoir. Et Josué étendit vers la ville le javelot qu’il avait à la main.
le javelot. Le javelot levé donnait le signal de l’assaut contre Aï. Peut-être, était-il aussi un signe de confiance en Dieu: « je vais la livrer en ton pouvoir » se traduit littéralement « je veux la donner dans ta main ». Moïse avait levé un bâton et les bras afin de symboliser la confiance placée en Dieu pour la victoire contre Amalek (#Ex 17:8-13).
19 Aussitôt qu’il eut étendu sa main, les hommes en embuscade sortirent précipitamment du lieu où ils étaient ; ils pénétrèrent dans la ville, la prirent, et se hâtèrent d’y mettre le feu.
20 Les gens d’Aï, ayant regardé derrière eux, virent la fumée de la ville monter vers le ciel, et ils ne purent se sauver d’aucun côté. Le peuple qui fuyait vers le désert se retourna contre ceux qui le poursuivaient ;
21 car Josué et tout Israël, voyant la ville prise par les hommes de l’embuscade, et la fumée de la ville qui montait, se retournèrent et battirent les gens d’Aï.
22 Les autres sortirent de la ville à leur rencontre, et les gens d’Aï furent enveloppés par Israël de toutes parts. Israël les battit, sans leur laisser un survivant ni un fuyard ;
23 ¶ ils prirent vivant le roi d’Aï, et l’amenèrent à Josué.
24 Lorsqu’Israël eut achevé de tuer tous les habitants d’Aï dans la campagne, dans le désert, où ils l’avaient poursuivi, et que tous furent entièrement passés au fil de l’épée, tout Israël revint vers Aï et la frappa du tranchant de l’épée.
25 Il y eut au total douze mille personnes tuées ce jour-là, hommes et femmes, tous gens d’Aï.
26 Josué ne retira point sa main qu’il tenait étendue avec le javelot, jusqu’à ce que tous les habitants eussent été dévoués par interdit.
27 Seulement Israël garda pour lui le bétail et le butin de cette ville, selon l’ordre que l’Éternel avait prescrit à Josué.
28 Josué brûla Aï, et en fit à jamais un monceau de ruines, qui subsiste encore aujourd’hui.
29 Il fit pendre à un bois le roi d’Aï, et l’y laissa jusqu’au soir. Au coucher du soleil, Josué ordonna qu’on descendît son cadavre du bois ; on le jeta à l’entrée de la porte de la ville, et l’on éleva sur lui un grand monceau de pierres, qui subsiste encore aujourd’hui.
le roi d’Aï. L’élimination de toute la population d’Aï impliquait la pendaison de son roi. C’était une sage démarche, puisque cela prévenait toute tentative ultérieure de lever une armée cananéenne. De plus, compte tenu de sa méchanceté, ce roi méritait d’être puni conformément aux normes bibliques (#De 21: 22 ; #Jos 10:26-27). Dieu se vengeait ainsi de ses ennemis.
30 ¶ Alors Josué bâtit un autel à l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, sur le mont Ebal,
8:30-35 Cette cérémonie fut organisée, en obéissance à #De 27:1-26, pour conclure la campagne menée par Josué vers le centre du pays (cf. #Jos 6:1-8:35).
8:30-31 C’était à Dieu qu’allait la reconnaissance pour la victoire accordée. Conformément aux instructions d’#Ex 30:24-26, l’autel fut construit en pierres brutes, ce qui préservait le caractère dépouillé, exempt de toute mise en scène humaine, du culte. Josué réserva une place centrale à la Parole de Dieu.
31 comme Moïse, serviteur de l’Éternel, l’avait ordonné aux enfants d’Israël, et comme il est écrit dans le livre de la loi de Moïse : c’était un autel de pierres brutes, sur lesquelles on ne porta point le fer. Ils offrirent sur cet autel des holocaustes à l’Éternel, et ils présentèrent des sacrifices d’actions de grâces.
32 Et là Josué écrivit sur les pierres une copie de la loi que Moïse avait écrite devant les enfants d’Israël.
33 Tout Israël, ses anciens, ses officiers et ses juges, se tenaient des deux côtés de l’arche, devant les sacrificateurs, les Lévites, qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel ; les étrangers comme les enfants d’Israël étaient là, moitié du côté du mont Garizim, moitié du côté du mont Ebal, selon l’ordre qu’avait précédemment donné Moïse, serviteur de l’Éternel, de bénir le peuple d’Israël.
34 Josué lut ensuite toutes les paroles de la loi, les bénédictions et les malédictions, suivant ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi.
35 Il n’y eut rien de tout ce que Moïse avait prescrit, que Josué ne lût en présence de toute l’assemblée d’Israël, des femmes et des enfants, et des étrangers qui marchaient au milieu d’eux.

1 ¶ The LORD said to Joshua, Fear not, nor be dismayed! Take with thee all the people of war, stand up, up against Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai and his people, his city and his country.
2 You Ai and her king as you did Jericho and its king treated; you just keep to yourself the loot and livestock. Set an ambush behind the city.
3 ¶ Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai. He chose thirty thousand valiant men, he made from night
... thirty thousand men. The elite corps of Joshua was far outnumber the army of Ai, with its total population of 12 000 (#Jos verse 8:25). He did not show presumption was not satisfied, this time, a small army (cf. #Jos 7: 3-4). Besides the 30,000 men charged with plunder and burn the city, he destined a second group to use as bait to fool defenders (verses #Jos 8: 5-6) and a third detachment of about 5,000 men to prevent people Bethel to come to the rescue of their neighbors (#Jos verse 8:12).
4 And he commanded them: Listen, you shall lie in ambush behind the city; do not go very far from the city, and be all ready.
5 I, and all the people that are with me will approach the city. And when they come out against us, as before, we will flee before them.
6 They will pursue us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, They flee before us, like the first time! And we will flee before them.
7 You shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city, and the LORD your God will deliver it into your hands.
... the Lord will deliver it into your hands. God sovereignly caused the defeat of Israel because of the disobedience of Achan (#Jos 7: 1-5). Again and regardless of the number of contract soldiers, it was he again who, in his sovereign power, granted victory.
8 When you have taken the city, ye shall set the fire, you will act as the Lord said, this is the order I give you.
9 Joshua sent them, and they went to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, west of Ai. But Joshua spent that night among the people.
10 Joshua rose early in the morning, mustered the people magazine, and marched against Ai, head of the people, he and the elders of Israel.
11 All the people of war who were with him went up and drew near; when they came before the city and camped north of Ai, they were separated by the valley.
12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, west of the city.
13 After the camp had taken a position north of the city and the ambush to the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the middle of the valley.
14 When the king of Ai saw it, the men of Ai rose up in haste in the morning, and went forth to meet Israel to fight it. The king went with all his people, at a time appointed, on the side of the plain, and he did not know he was behind the city an ambush against him.
15 Joshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten before them, and they fled by the way of the wilderness.
16 So all the people that were in the city were called together to pursue after them. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.
17. There were in Ai or Bethel, not a man that went not out against Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.
18 The LORD said to Joshua, Stretch out toward Ai the javelin you have in hand, for I will deliver into your power. Joshua stretched out toward the city the javelin that was in his hand.
javelin. The survey javelin gave the signal for the assault against Ai. Perhaps, it was also a sign of trust in God: "I will give it into your power" translates literally "I want to give in your hand." Moses had lifted a stick and arms to symbolize trust in God for victory against Amalek (#Ex 17: 8-13).
19 when he stretched his hand, men in ambush rushed out of the place where they were; they entered the city, took it, and hastened to set it on fire.
20 The men of Ai looked behind them, they saw the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they could not save any side. The people who fled to the wilderness turned against the pursuers;
21 When Joshua and all Israel saw that the city taken by the ambush, and the smoke of the city ascended, returned and smote the men of Ai.
22 The others came out of the city against them, and the men of Ai were surrounded by Israel from all sides. Israel smote them, so let them remain or escape;
23 ¶ they took alive the king of Ai, and brought him to Joshua.
24 When Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness where they pursued them, and all were fully put to the sword, all Israel returned to Ai, and smote the edge of the sword.
25 There were twelve thousand people killed that day, men and women, all men of Ai.
26 Joshua did not withdrew his hand which he stretched out the javelin, until all the people had been utterly destroyed.
27 Only Israel took for cattle and the spoil of that city, according to the order which the Lord had commanded Joshua.
28 Joshua burned Ai, and never made a heap of ruins, which still exists today.
29 he hanged on a tree the king of Ai, and until evening. At sunset, Joshua commanded that they took his body down from the wood; cast it at the entrance to the city gate, and raised over it a great heap of stones, which still exists today.
the king of Ai. The elimination of the entire population of Ai involved hanging his king. It was a wise move, since it prevented any subsequent attempt to lift a Canaanite army. Moreover, given its wickedness, that King deserved to be punished in accordance with biblical standards (# of 21: 22; #Jos 10: 26-27). God avenged his enemies.
30 ¶ Then Joshua built an altar to the LORD God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,
8: 30-35 This ceremony was organized in obedience to # of 27: 1-26, to conclude the campaign by Joshua to the center of the country (see #Jos 6: 1-8: 35). 8: 30-31 It was God was going to the recognition granted to the victory. In accordance with instructions # Ex 30: 24-26, the altar was built of rough stone, which preserved the character stripped, free of human development scene of worship. Joshua reserved a central place to the Word of God.
31 as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, and as it is written in the book of the law of Moses was an altar of stones, over which no man put themselves iron. They offered burnt offerings on the altar to the LORD, and they offered thanksgiving offerings.
32 And he wrote on the stones a copy of the law that Moses had written before the children of Israel.
33 All Israel, and their elders and officers and judges, stood on both sides of the ark, before the priests, the Levites, who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD; foreigners as the children of Israel were there, half in front of Mount Gerizim and half the side of Mount Ebal, the order had previously given Moses the servant of the Lord, bless the people of Israel.
34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, blessings and curses, according to what is written in the book of the law.
35 There was nothing all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the assembly of Israel, women and children, and the foreigners who were among them.
