1 ¶ Après Abimélec, Thola, fils de Pua, fils de Dodo, homme d’Issacar, se leva pour délivrer Israël ; il habitait à Schamir, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm.
2 Il fut juge en Israël pendant vingt-trois ans ; puis il mourut, et fut enterré à Schamir.
3 Après lui, se leva Jaïr, le Galaadite, qui fut juge en Israël pendant vingt-deux ans.
10:3-5 Jaïr fut probablement juge à l’époque de Ruth.
4 Il avait trente fils, qui montaient sur trente ânons, et qui possédaient trente villes, appelées encore aujourd’hui bourgs de Jaïr, et situées dans le pays de Galaad.
5 Et Jaïr mourut, et fut enterré à Kamon.
6 ¶ Les enfants d’Israël firent encore ce qui déplaît à l’Éternel ; ils servirent les Baals et les Astartés, les dieux de Syrie, les dieux de Sidon, les dieux de Moab, les dieux des fils d’Ammon, et les dieux des Philistins, et ils abandonnèrent l’Éternel et ne le servirent plus.
7 La colère de l’Éternel s’enflamma contre Israël, et il les vendit entre les mains des Philistins et entre les mains des fils d’Ammon.
8 Ils opprimèrent et écrasèrent les enfants d’Israël cette année-là, et pendant dix-huit ans tous les enfants d’Israël qui étaient de l’autre côté du Jourdain dans le pays des Amoréens en Galaad.
9 Les fils d’Ammon passèrent le Jourdain pour combattre aussi contre Juda, contre Benjamin et contre la maison d’Éphraïm. Et Israël fut dans une grande détresse.
10 ¶ Les enfants d’Israël crièrent à l’Éternel, en disant : Nous avons péché contre toi, car nous avons abandonné notre Dieu et nous avons servi les Baals.
Nous avons péché. Cette confession allait être suivie d’une sincère repentance ( #Jug 10:15-16).
11 L’Éternel dit aux enfants d’Israël: Ne vous ai-je pas délivrés des Égyptiens, des Amoréens, des fils d’Ammon, des Philistins ?
12 Et lorsque les Sidoniens, Amalek et Maon, vous opprimèrent, et que vous criâtes à moi, ne vous ai-je pas délivrés de leurs mains ?
13 Mais vous, vous m’avez abandonné, et vous avez servi d’autres dieux. C’est pourquoi je ne vous délivrerai plus.
10:13-14 Ce passage révèle une forme de manifestation de la colère de Dieu: il abandonne aux conséquences de leurs actes ceux qui pèchent de façon délibérée et avec obstination. Cet aspect du jugement divin apparaît clairement dans le cas de Samson (#Jug 16: 20) et dans les avertissements de #Pr 1:20-31 et #Ro 1:24-28, et il se répéta au cours de l’histoire (cf. #Ac 14:15-16), même parmi les Juifs (cf. #Os 4:17 ; #Mt 15: 14).
14 Allez, invoquez les dieux que vous avez choisis ; qu’ils vous délivrent au temps de votre détresse !
15 Les enfants d’Israël dirent à l’Éternel : Nous avons péché ; traite-nous comme il te plaira. Seulement, daigne nous délivrer aujourd’hui !
traite-nous comme il te plaira. Lorsqu’on se repent sincèrement, on reconnaît à Dieu le droit de châtier. Ainsi, la punition qu’il inflige est considérée comme juste, et il en est glorifié. On recherche aussi les correctifs que ce châtiment apporte, parce qu’on aspire à la sainteté.
16 Et ils ôtèrent les dieux étrangers du milieu d’eux, et servirent l’Éternel, qui fut touché des maux d’Israël.
17 Les fils d’Ammon se rassemblèrent et campèrent en Galaad, et les enfants d’Israël se rassemblèrent et campèrent à Mitspa.
18 Le peuple, les chefs de Galaad se dirent l’un à l’autre : Quel est l’homme qui commencera l’attaque contre les fils d’Ammon ? Il sera chef de tous les habitants de Galaad.

¶ 1 After Abimelech, Tola son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, arose to save Israel; he lived in Shamir in mount Ephraim.
2 He judged Israel twenty-three; and died, and was buried in Shamir.
3 After him arose Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel for twenty-two years.
10: 3-5 Jair was probably judge at the time of Ruth.
4 He had thirty son who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities, called Havvoth Jair, which are in Gilead.
5 And Jair died, and was buried in Kamon.
¶ 6 The children of Israel again did evil in the LORD; served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the son of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the LORD, and served not him.
7 The anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the son of Ammon.
8 They vexed and oppressed the children of Israel that year, and for eighteen years all the children of Israel that were on the other side Jordan in the land of the Amorites in Gilead.
9 The son of Ammon passed over Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim. And Israel was in great distress.
10 ¶ The children of Israel cried to the LORD, saying, We have sinned against thee, because we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.
We have sinned. This confession was to be followed by a sincere repentance (#Jug 10: 15-16).
11 The LORD said to the children of Israel, Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the son of Ammon, the Philistines?
12 The Zidonians also, and Amalek and Maon oppressed you, and ye cried to me, and I delivered you from their hands?
13 But you have forsaken me, and have served other gods. Therefore I will deliver you no more.
10: 13-14 This passage reveals a form of manifestation of the wrath of God: he gives up the consequences of their actions those who sin deliberately and obstinately. This aspect of divine judgment is clear in the case of Samson (#Jug 16: 20) and warnings #Pr 1: 20-31 and #Ro 1: 24-28, and it was repeated in history (see #AC 14: 15-16), even among the Jews (cf. #Os 4:17; #Mt 15: 14).
14 Go and cry to the gods you have chosen; they deliver you the time of your distress!
15 The children of Israel said to the Lord: We have sinned; Do to us as you please. Only deign to deliver us today!
Do to us as you please. When repents sincerely, we recognize God the right to punish. Thus, the punishment it inflicts is considered fair, and he is glorified. Wanted also patches punishment brings, because we aspire to holiness.
16 And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD was grieved for the misery of Israel.
17 The son of Ammon gathered and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.
18 The people, the leaders of Gilead, said one to another: What is the man who will begin to fight against the son of Ammon? It will be leader of all the inhabitants of Gilead.
