1 ¶ Il y avait un homme de la montagne d’Éphraïm, nommé Mica.
Les chapitres #Jug 17: 1-21: 2 se composent de divers récits destinés à illustrer le caractère déplorable de la situation générale à l’époque des juges.
2 Il dit à sa mère : Les mille et cent sicles d’argent qu’on t’a pris, et pour lesquels tu as fait des imprécations même à mes oreilles, voici, cet argent est entre mes mains, c’est moi qui l’avais pris. Et sa mère dit: Béni soit mon fils par l’Éternel !
3 Il rendit à sa mère les mille et cent sicles d’argent ; et sa mère dit : Je consacre de ma main cet argent à l’Éternel, afin d’en faire pour mon fils une image taillée et une image en fonte ; et c’est ainsi que je te le rendrai.
4 Il rendit à sa mère l’argent. Sa mère prit deux cents sicles d’argent. Et elle donna l’argent au fondeur, qui en fit une image taillée et une image en fonte. On les plaça dans la maison de Mica.
5 Ce Mica avait une maison de Dieu ; il fit un éphod et des théraphim, et il consacra l’un de ses fils, qui lui servit de prêtre.
une maison de Dieu. Un faux lieu de culte, avec des idoles personnelles et un sacrificateur privé, avait été instauré dans la tribu d’Éphraïm (v. #Jug 17: 1), alors que les sacrificateurs de l’Éternel devaient être de la tribu de Lévi (cf. v. #Jug 17: 13). Nous sommes en présence d’un exemple d’idolâtrie personnelle et familiale.
6 En ce temps-là, il n’y avait point de roi en Israël. Chacun faisait ce qui lui semblait bon.
Chacun faisait ce qui lui semblait bon. C’était la caractéristique générale de l’époque, et celle du comportement pécheur à toutes les époques de l’histoire. La même attitude avait déjà prévalu, beaucoup plus tôt, en Israël (cf. #De 12:8 ; #Jug 21: 25).
7 ¶ Il y avait un jeune homme de Bethléhem de Juda, de la famille de Juda ; il était Lévite, et il séjournait là.
17:7-13
Lévite. Cet homme s’engagea sur la voie du compromis en quittant l’une des 48 villes que Dieu avait données aux Lévites pour qu’ils y servent Israël (#Jos 21), puis il pécha gravement en se prostituant comme sacrificateur d’un culte d’idolâtre.
8 Cet homme partit de la ville de Bethléhem de Juda, pour chercher une demeure qui lui convînt. En poursuivant son chemin, il arriva dans la montagne d’Éphraïm jusqu’à la maison de Mica.
9 Mica lui dit : D’où viens-tu ? Il lui répondit : Je suis Lévite, de Bethléhem de Juda, et je voyage pour chercher une demeure qui me convienne.
10 Mica lui dit : Reste avec moi ; tu me serviras de père et de prêtre, et je te donnerai dix sicles d’argent par année, les vêtements dont tu auras besoin, et ton entretien. Et le Lévite entra.
11 Il se décida ainsi à rester avec cet homme, qui regarda le jeune homme comme l’un de ses fils.
12 Mica consacra le Lévite, et ce jeune homme lui servit de prêtre et demeura dans sa maison.
13 Et Mica dit : Maintenant, je sais que l’Éternel me fera du bien, puisque j’ai ce Lévite pour prêtre.

1 ¶ There was a man of mount Ephraim, named Micah.
#Jug Chapters 17: 1-21: 2 consist of several stories to illustrate the deplorable nature of the overall situation at the time of the judges.
2 He said to his mother: The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken, and for which you did curse even to my ears, behold, the silver is in my hands, it was I who I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be my son by the Lord!
3 He went to his mother the eleven hundred shekels of silver; and his mother said, I spend money from my hand to the LORD, to make my son a graven image and a molten image; and that is how I will repay.
4 He gave his mother money. His mother took two hundred shekels of silver. And she gave to the silversmith, who made a graven image and a molten image. They were placed in Micah's house.
5 Micah had a house of God; he made an ephod, and consecrated one of his son, who became his priest.
a house of God. A false place of worship idols with personal and private priest had been introduced in the tribe of Ephraim (v #Jug. 17: 1), while the priests of the Lord to be the tribe of Levi ( . #Jug see verse 17: 13). We have here an example of personal and family idolatry.
6 In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did as he saw fit.
Everyone did as he saw fit. It was the general characteristic of the time, and that of sinful behavior in all periods of history. The same attitude had prevailed, much earlier, in Israel (see # of 12: 8; #Jug 21: 25).
7 ¶ There was a young man from Bethlehem in Judah, of the family of Judah; he was a Levite, and he sojourned there.
17: 7-13
Levite. The man stepped onto the path of compromise by leaving one of 48 cities that God had given to the Levites that they will serve Israel (#Jos 21), then seriously sinned through prostitution as priest of a cult idolatrous.
8 And the man departed from the town of Bethlehem in Judah, to find a home that suited him. Continuing his way, he came to mount Ephraim to the house of Micah.
9 Micah said to him: Where are you from? He replied: I am a Levite of Bethlehem Judah, and I go to find a home that suits me.
10 Micah said: Stay with me; you serve me a father and a priest, and I will give you ten shekels of silver a year, clothes that you will need, and your maintenance. And the Levite went in.
11 He decided to dwell with the man, and the young man as one of his son.
12 Micah consecrated the Levite, and the young man became his priest and lived in his house.
13 Then said Micah, Now I know that Jehovah will do me good, since I have a Levite for priest.
