1 ¶ En ce temps-là, il n’y avait point de roi en Israël ; et la tribu des Danites se cherchait une possession pour s’établir, car jusqu’à ce jour il ne lui était point échu d’héritage au milieu des tribus d’Israël.
2 Les fils de Dan prirent sur eux tous, parmi leurs familles, cinq hommes vaillants, qu’ils envoyèrent de Tsorea et d’Eschthaol, pour explorer le pays et pour l’examiner. Ils leur dirent : Allez, examinez le pays. Ils arrivèrent dans la montagne d’Éphraïm jusqu’à la maison de Mica, et ils y passèrent la nuit.
Dan. Comme toutes les autres tribus, les Danites avaient reçu un territoire, mais ils ne parvinrent pas à s’appuyer sur la puissance de Dieu pour le conquérir. Plus tard, ils capitulèrent en acceptant la défaite et migrèrent vers le nord où ils vécurent dans l’idolâtrie (#Jug 18).
Dan sert d’exemple de l’idolâtrie de toute une tribu.
3 Comme ils étaient près de la maison de Mica, ils reconnurent la voix du jeune Lévite, s’approchèrent et lui dirent : Qui t’a amené ici ? que fais-tu dans ce lieu ? et qu’as-tu ici ?
4 Il leur répondit : Mica fait pour moi telle et telle chose, il me donne un salaire, et je lui sers de prêtre.
5 Ils lui dirent : Consulte Dieu, afin que nous sachions si notre voyage aura du succès.
Consulte Dieu. Le passage ne précise pas si le Lévite rechercha effectivement le conseil de Dieu avant de donner sa réponse (v. #Jug 18: 6); les Danites auraient dû prier et chercher la volonté de Dieu avant de faire ce voyage ou de consulter un sacrificateur désobéissant comme on consulterait un oracle.
6 Et le prêtre leur répondit : Allez en paix ; le voyage que vous faites est sous le regard de l’Éternel.
7 ¶ Les cinq hommes partirent, et ils arrivèrent à Laïs. Ils virent le peuple qui y était vivant en sécurité à la manière des Sidoniens, tranquille et sans inquiétude ; il n’y avait dans le pays personne qui leur fît le moindre outrage en dominant sur eux ; ils étaient éloignés des Sidoniens, et ils n’avaient pas de liaison avec d’autres hommes.
Laïs. Aussi appelée Léschem (cf. #Jos 19: 47), elle se trouvait dans une région riche, à l’écart.
8 Ils revinrent auprès de leurs frères à Tsorea et Eschthaol, et leurs frères leur dirent: Quelle nouvelle apportez-vous ?
9 Allons ! répondirent-ils, montons contre eux ; car nous avons vu le pays, et voici, il est très bon. Quoi ! vous restez sans rien dire ! Ne soyez point paresseux à vous mettre en marche pour aller prendre possession de ce pays.
10 Quand vous y entrerez, vous arriverez vers un peuple en sécurité. Le pays est vaste, et Dieu l’a livré entre vos mains ; c’est un lieu où rien ne manque de tout ce qui est sur la terre.
11 Six cents hommes de la famille de Dan partirent de Tsorea et d’Eschthaol, munis de leurs armes de guerre.
12 Ils montèrent, et campèrent à Kirjath-Jearim en Juda ; c’est pourquoi ce lieu, qui est derrière Kirjath-Jearim, a été appelé jusqu’à ce jour Machané-Dan.
13 Ils passèrent de là dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, et ils arrivèrent jusqu’à la maison de Mica.
14 ¶ Alors les cinq hommes qui étaient allés pour explorer le pays de Laïs prirent la parole et dirent à leurs frères: Savez-vous qu’il y a dans ces maisons-là un éphod, des théraphim, une image taillée et une image en fonte ? Voyez maintenant ce que vous avez à faire.
18:14-26 Les Danites commirent un péché en volant les idoles de Mica. Ils croyaient sans doute qu’elles étaient la source de la puissance qui leur donnerait le territoire convoité. Jonathan, le Lévite apostat qui avait été au service de Mica comme sacrificateur, se fit l’auteur d’une nouvelle trahison pour devenir le sacrificateur des Danites (vv. #Jug 18:18-20, #Jug 18: 30). Au lieu de s’inquiéter de cette tendance à la défection, ceux-ci crurent en sa puissance spirituelle.
15 Ils s’approchèrent de là, entrèrent dans la maison du jeune Lévite, dans la maison de Mica, et lui demandèrent comment il se portait.
16 Les six cents hommes d’entre les fils de Dan, munis de leurs armes de guerre, se tenaient à l’entrée de la porte.
17 Et les cinq hommes qui étaient allés pour explorer le pays montèrent et entrèrent dans la maison ; ils prirent l’image taillée, l’éphod, les théraphim, et l’image en fonte, pendant que le prêtre était à l’entrée de la porte avec les six cents hommes munis de leurs armes de guerre.
18 Lorsqu’ils furent entrés dans la maison de Mica, et qu’ils eurent pris l’image taillée, l’éphod, les théraphim, et l’image en fonte, le prêtre leur dit : Que faites-vous ?
19 Ils lui répondirent : Tais-toi, mets ta main sur ta bouche, et viens avec nous ; tu nous serviras de père et de prêtre. Vaut-il mieux que tu serves de prêtre à la maison d’un seul homme, ou que tu serves de prêtre à une tribu et à une famille en Israël ?
20 Le prêtre éprouva de la joie dans son cœur ; il prit l’éphod, les théraphim, et l’image taillée, et se joignit à la troupe.
21 Ils se remirent en route et partirent, en plaçant devant eux les enfants, le bétail et les bagages.
22 Comme ils étaient déjà loin de la maison de Mica, les gens qui habitaient les maisons voisines de celle de Mica se rassemblèrent et poursuivirent les fils de Dan.
23 Ils appelèrent les fils de Dan, qui se retournèrent et dirent à Mica : Qu’as-tu, et que signifie ce rassemblement ?
24 Il répondit : Mes dieux que j’avais faits, vous les avez enlevés avec le prêtre et vous êtes partis : que me reste-t-il ? Comment donc pouvez-vous me dire : Qu’as-tu ?
25 Les fils de Dan lui dirent : Ne fais pas entendre ta voix près de nous ; sinon des hommes irrités se jetteront sur vous, et tu causeras ta perte et celle de ta maison.
26 Et les fils de Dan continuèrent leur route. Mica, voyant qu’ils étaient plus forts que lui, s’en retourna et revint dans sa maison.
27 ¶ Ils enlevèrent ainsi ce qu’avait fait Mica et emmenèrent le prêtre qui était à son service, et ils tombèrent sur Laïs, sur un peuple tranquille et en sécurité ; ils le passèrent au fil de l’épée, et ils brûlèrent la ville.
28 Personne ne la délivra, car elle était éloignée de Sidon, et ses habitants n’avaient pas de liaison avec d’autres hommes : elle était dans la vallée qui s’étend vers Beth-Rehob. Les fils de Dan rebâtirent la ville, et y habitèrent ;
29 ils l’appelèrent Dan, d’après le nom de Dan, leur père, qui était né à Israël ; mais la ville s’appelait auparavant Laïs.
l’appelèrent Dan. Elle se situait à l’extrémité septentrionale de Canaan, d’où l’expression « depuis Dan jusqu’à Beer-Schéba », c’est-à-dire du nord au sud du pays (cf. #Jug 20: 1).
30 Ils dressèrent pour eux l’image taillée ; et Jonathan, fils de Guerschom, fils de Manassé, lui et ses fils, furent prêtres pour la tribu des Danites, jusqu’à l’époque de la captivité du pays.
fils de Manassé. Certains manuscrits portent « fils de Moïse » (#Ex 2:22 ; #Ex 18: 3). Ce service sacerdotal idolâtre se poursuivit jusqu’à « la captivité », terme qui renvoie probablement à la déportation d’Israël par la puissance assyrienne en 722 av. J.-C. (#2R 15: 29 ; #2R 17:1-6), ou alors à la prise par les Philistins de l’arche qui se trouvait à Silo (voir #Jug 18: 31) en #1S 4:11.
31 Ils établirent pour eux l’image taillée qu’avait faite Mica, pendant tout le temps que la maison de Dieu fut à Silo.
la maison de Dieu fut à Silo. L’arche de Dieu était loin d’eux, et ils justifièrent leur idolâtrie par la distance qui les séparait du reste d’Israël. Ils entraînèrent plusieurs générations dans l’idolâtrie.

1 ¶ In those days there was no king in Israel; and the tribe of Dan sought them an inheritance to settle, because until now it was not due to his inheritance among the tribes of Israel.
2 The son of Dan took over all of them, from their families five men of valor, from Zorah and Eshtaol, to explore the country and to examine it. They said to them, Go, search the land. They came to mount Ephraim to the house of Micah, and lodged there.
Dan. Like all the other tribes, the Danites had received a territory, but they were unable to rely on God's power to conquer. They later surrendered accepting defeat and migrated to the north, where they lived in idolatry (#Jug 18).
Dan serves as an example of the idolatry of a whole tribe.
3 When they were near the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young Levite came and said to him, Who brought you here? what are you doing in this place? and what hast thou here?
4 He answered Micah with me so and so, he has hired me, and I am his priest.
5 They said to him, Inquire God, that we may know whether our journey will be successful.
Consult God. The passage does not specify whether the Levite actually sought the counsel of God before giving his answer (v #Jug. 18: 6); the Danites ought pray and seek God's will before this trip or consult a priest disobedient as they consult an oracle.
6 And the priest said unto them, Go in peace; the journey you make is under the eye of the Lord.
¶ 7 The five men left and came to Laish. They saw the people who were living in security like the Sidonians, quiet and secure; there was nobody in the country that made them any shame in them; they were far from the Sidonians, and they had no link with other men.
Lais. Also called Léschem (cf. #Jos 19: 47), she was in a rich area, away.
8 They came to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?
9 Come! they replied, go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. What! you keep saying nothing! Not slothful you start to take possession of this country.
10 When you go, you will come to a people secure. The country is vast and God has given it into your hands; it is a place where nothing is missing from all that is on earth.
11 Six hundred men of the family of Dan from Zorah and Eshtaol, armed with weapons of war.
12 They went up, and pitched in Kirjathjearim in Judah; that's why this place is behind Kirjathjearim, was called to this day the camp of Dan.
13 And they passed thence to mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.
14 ¶ Then the five men who went to spy out the land of Laish, and said unto their brethren: You know that there is in these houses an ephod, teraphim, a graven image and a picture melting ? Now see what you have to do.
18: 14-26 The Danites committed a sin by stealing the idols of Micah. They believed they were probably the source of the power that would give them the coveted territory. Jonathan, the apostate Levite who had been in Mica service as a priest, became the author of a new betrayal to become the priest of Dan (vv #Jug. 18: 18-20, #Jug 18: 30). Instead of worrying about this trend of desertion, they believed in its spiritual power.
15 They turned aside there, entered the house of the young Levite, the house of Micah, and asked him how he was.
16 The six hundred men of the son of Dan, armed with weapons of war, stood at the entrance of the gate.
17 And the five men who went to spy out the land went up and entered the house; and took the graven image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, while the priest was at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war.
18 When these went into Micah's house, and they had taken the graven image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said unto them, What are you doing?
19 They answered him, silent, put your hand over your mouth, and go with us; be to us a father and a priest. Is it better to be priest unto the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?
20 And the priest joy in his heart; he took the ephod, the teraphim, and the graven image, and joined the troupe.
21 And they turned and departed, and put before them the children, livestock and baggage.
22 As they were already far from the house of Micah, the men who lived in the houses near to Micah assembled and overtook the son of Dan.
23 They called the son of Dan, who turned around and said to Micah, What ails you, and what does this gathering?
24 He answered my gods which I made, and you have taken away the priest, and are gone: what do I have left? So how can you tell me: What did you?
25 The son of Dan said to him: Do not make your voice heard among us, lest angry fellows fall on you, and you lose your life and that of your house.
26 And the son of Dan went their way. Micah saw that they were too strong for him, turned and went back into her house.
27 ¶ And they took what Micah had made and the priest which was in his service, and they came upon Laish, to a people quiet and secure; they went to the edge of the sword, and burnt the city.
28 no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with any man; and it was in the valley that extends to Beth Rehob. The son of Dan rebuilt the city, and dwelt therein;
29 they called it Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born in Israel; but the city was Laish.
called him Dan. It was located at the northern extremity of Canaan, hence the expression "from Dan to Beersheba", that is to say, from north to south (see #Jug 20: 1) .
30 They set up the graven image; and Jonathan, son of Gershom, son of Manasseh, he and his son were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the country.
son of Manasseh. Some manuscripts have "son of Moses" (2:22 #Ex; #Ex 18: 3). This priestly service idolatrous continued until "the captivity", a term which probably refers to the deportation of Israel by the Assyrian power in 722 BC. BC (# 2R 15: 29; # 2R 17: 1-6), and then taking the Philistines of the ark, which was in Shiloh (see #Jug 18: 31) 1S # 4 : 11.
31 And they set up the graven image which he made Mica, during the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
God's house was in Shiloh. The ark of God was far from them, and they justified their idolatry by the distance that separated them from the rest of Israel. They trained several generations into idolatry.
