1 ¶ Les enfants d’Israël firent encore ce qui déplaît à l’Éternel, après qu’Ehud fut mort.
2 Et l’Éternel les vendit entre les mains de Jabin, roi de Canaan, qui régnait à Hatsor. Le chef de son armée était Sisera, et habitait à Haroscheth-Goïm.
3 Les enfants d’Israël crièrent à l’Éternel, car Jabin avait neuf cents chars de fer, et il opprimait avec violence les enfants d’Israël depuis vingt ans.
4 ¶ Dans ce temps-là, Débora, prophétesse, femme de Lappidoth, était juge en Israël.
Débora, prophétesse. Cette femme pleine de sagesse et influente assuma les fonctions d’un juge, sans toutefois prendre la tête de la campagne militaire. Dieu peut employer avec puissance des femmes, que ce soit pour des tâches civiles, religieuses ou autres. Les prophétesses qu’étaient Hulda (#2R 22: 14) ou les filles de Philippe (#Ac 21:8-9) et la diaconesse Phœbé (#Ro 16: 1) en sont des exemples. Le rôle confié à Débora fait néanmoins figure d’exception dans ce livre, et il semble en partie dû au manque de courage de Barak (versets #Jug 4:8, #Jug 4:14). Dieu réprimanda sa lâcheté en faisant le serment que ce serait une femme qui tuerait Sisera (verset #Jug 4:9).
5 Elle siégeait sous le palmier de Débora, entre Rama et Béthel, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm ; et les enfants d’Israël montaient vers elle pour être jugés.
6 Elle envoya appeler Barak, fils d’Abinoam, de Kédesch-Nephthali, et elle lui dit : N’est-ce pas l’ordre qu’a donné l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël ? Va, dirige-toi sur le mont Thabor, et prends avec toi dix mille hommes des enfants de Nephthali et des enfants de Zabulon ;
7 j’attirerai vers toi, au torrent de Kison, Sisera, chef de l’armée de Jabin, avec ses chars et ses troupes, et je le livrerai entre tes mains.
8 Barak lui dit : Si tu viens avec moi, j’irai ; mais si tu ne viens pas avec moi, je n’irai pas.
9 Elle répondit : J’irai bien avec toi ; mais tu n’auras point de gloire sur la voie où tu marches, car l’Éternel livrera Sisera entre les mains d’une femme. Et Débora se leva, et elle se rendit avec Barak à Kédesch.
10 ¶ Barak convoqua Zabulon et Nephthali à Kédesch ; dix mille hommes marchèrent à sa suite, et Débora partit avec lui.
11 Héber, le Kénien, s’était séparé des Kéniens, des fils de Hobab, beau-père de Moïse, et il avait dressé sa tente jusqu’au chêne de Tsaannaïm, près de Kédesch.
12 On informa Sisera que Barak, fils d’Abinoam, s’était dirigé sur le mont Thabor.
13 Et, depuis Haroscheth-Goïm, Sisera rassembla vers le torrent de Kison tous ses chars, neuf cents chars de fer, et tout le peuple qui était avec lui.
14 Alors Débora dit à Barak : Lève-toi, car voici le jour où l’Éternel livre Sisera entre tes mains. L’Éternel ne marche-t-il pas devant toi ? Et Barak descendit du mont Thabor, ayant dix mille hommes à sa suite.
15 L’Éternel mit en déroute devant Barak, par le tranchant de l’épée, Sisera, tous ses chars et tout le camp. Sisera descendit de son char, et s’enfuit à pied.
16 Barak poursuivit les chars et l’armée jusqu’à Haroscheth-Goïm ; et toute l’armée de Sisera tomba sous le tranchant de l’épée, sans qu’il en restât un seul homme.
17 ¶ Sisera se réfugia à pied dans la tente de Jaël, femme de Héber, le Kénien ; car il y avait paix entre Jabin, roi de Hatsor, et la maison de Héber, le Kénien.
18 Jaël sortit au-devant de Sisera, et lui dit : Entre, mon seigneur, entre chez moi, ne crains point. Il entra chez elle dans la tente, et elle le cacha sous une couverture.
19 Il lui dit : Donne-moi, je te prie, un peu d’eau à boire, car j’ai soif. Elle ouvrit l’outre du lait, lui donna à boire, et le couvrit.

lui donna à boire, et le couvrit. Habituellement, ce geste était le gage de la meilleure protection possible.
20 Il lui dit encore : Tiens-toi à l’entrée de la tente, et si l’on vient t’interroger en disant : Y a-t-il ici quelqu’un ? tu répondras : Non.
21 Jaël, femme de Héber, saisit un pieu de la tente, prit en main le marteau, s’approcha de lui doucement, et lui enfonça dans la tempe le pieu, qui pénétra en terre. Il était profondément endormi et accablé de fatigue ; et il mourut.
un pieu de la tente … le marteau. Le coup audacieux porté par Jaël dans une tente, et non sur un champ de bataille, provoqua l’admiration de Débora et Barak (#Jug 5:24-27). Sa force et son habileté s’étaient sans doute développées au cours de sa vie de nomade, grâce à l’habitude de planter et d’arracher les pieux des tentes.
22 Comme Barak poursuivait Sisera, Jaël sortit à sa rencontre et lui dit : Viens, et je te montrerai l’homme que tu cherches. Il entra chez elle, et voici, Sisera était étendu mort, le pieu dans la tempe.
23 En ce jour, Dieu humilia Jabin, roi de Canaan, devant les enfants d’Israël.
24 Et la main des enfants d’Israël s’appesantit de plus en plus sur Jabin, roi de Canaan, jusqu’à ce qu’ils eussent exterminé Jabin, roi de Canaan.

1 ¶ The children of Israel did evil in the LORD, when Ehud was dead.
2 And the LORD sold them into the hands of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The head of his army was Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.
3 The children of Israel cried to the Lord, for he had nine hundred iron chariots, and he oppressed the Israelites for twenty years.
4 ¶ In that time, Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel.
Deborah, a prophetess. This wise woman and influential assumed the functions of a judge, without taking the head of the military campaign. God can use power with women, whether for civilian tasks, religious or otherwise. The prophets that were Hulda (# 2R 22: 14) or the daughters of Philip (#AC 21: 8-9) and the deaconess Phoebe (#Ro 16: 1) are examples. The role entrusted to Deborah however is an exception in this book, and it seems partly due to the lack of courage of Barak (verses #Jug 4: 8, #Jug 4:14). God rebuked his cowardice by vowing it would be a woman who killed Sisera (#Jug 4 verse 9).
5 And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim; and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.
6 She sent for Barak son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-Naphtali, and said: Is not the order that gave the Lord the God of Israel? Go, runs up to Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun
7 I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, chief of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his troops, and I will deliver into your hands.
8 Barak said to him: If you come with me, I will go; but if you do not come with me, I will not go.
9 She said, I will surely go with you; but you shall have glory point on the path where you walk, for the LORD will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.
10 ¶ Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; ten thousand men after him, and Deborah went with him.
11 Heber the Kenite had separated from the Kenites, and the son of Hobab the father of Moses, and had pitched his tent unto the oak of Zaanannim, near Kedesh.
12 And they told Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone to Mount Tabor.
13 And, from Harosheth of the Gentiles, Sisera gathered together to the river Kishon all his chariots, nine hundred iron chariots, and all the people that were with him.
14 Deborah said to Barak, Up! For this is the day the LORD hath delivered Sisera into your hand. The Lord does he out before thee? And Barak went down from Mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
15 The LORD routed before Barak by the edge of the sword, Sisera, all his chariots and all the camp. Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled on foot.
16 Barak pursued the chariots and army to Harosheth of the Gentiles; and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword, and there was not one man.
17 ¶ And Sisera fled on foot to the tent of Jael, wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.
18 Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. He came to her into the tent, and she covered him with a blanket.
19 He said to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. She opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.

and gave him drink, and covered him. Usually, this gesture was the guarantee of the best possible protection.
20 He said to her, Stand in the door of the tent, and if one has to question you and say: Is there someone here? thou shalt say, No.
21 Jael, Heber's wife took a nail of the tent, took up the hammer, approached him slowly, and stuck him in the temple the stake, which penetrated into the ground. He was fast asleep and weary; and he died.
a tent peg ... the hammer. The bold blow by Jael in a tent, not on a battlefield, provoked the admiration of Deborah and Barak (#Jug 5: 24-27). Its strength and skill were probably developed during his nomadic life, with the habit of planting and pulling piles tents.
22 as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him and said, Come, I will show you the man you seek. He entered it, and behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail was in his temples.
23 In that day God subdued Jabin king of Canaan before the Israelites.
24 And the hand of the children of Israel dwells more on Jabin king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.
