1 ¶ Lorsque la muraille fut rebâtie et que j’eus posé les battants des portes, on établit dans leurs fonctions les portiers, les chantres et les Lévites.
2 Je donnai mes ordres à Hanani, mon frère, et à Hanania, chef de la citadelle de Jérusalem, homme supérieur au grand nombre par sa fidélité et par sa crainte de Dieu.

3 Je leur dis : Les portes de Jérusalem ne s’ouvriront pas avant que la chaleur du soleil soit venue, et l’on fermera les battants aux verrous en votre présence ; les habitants de Jérusalem feront la garde, chacun à son poste devant sa maison.
Dans le Proche-Orient ancien, on ouvrait généralement les portes de la ville à l’aube, et on les refermait au soleil couchant. Néhémie donna des ordres différents, compte tenu de l’attitude hostile des voisins: les portes ne devaient pas être ouvertes avant que tout le monde soit debout et actif; lorsqu’elles étaient fermées, des sentinelles devaient monter la garde sur les tours de guet, et chacun devant sa propre maison (v. #Né 7:4).
4 La ville était spacieuse et grande, mais peu peuplée, et les maisons n’étaient pas bâties.
5 ¶ Mon Dieu me mit au cœur d’assembler les grands, les magistrats et le peuple, pour en faire le dénombrement. Je trouvai un registre généalogique de ceux qui étaient montés les premiers, et j’y vis écrit ce qui suit.
Mon Dieu me mit au cœur. Tout au long du livre, Néhémie affirma que Dieu était à l’œuvre, dans toutes les circonstances (cf. #Né 2:8, #Né 2:18 ; #Né 6:16).

Je trouvai un registre. Néhémie découvrit un registre établi par Esdras à Babylone avant le départ du premier groupe d’exilés. C’était la liste des personnes revenues à Jérusalem sous la conduite de Zorobabel.
6 Voici ceux de la province qui revinrent de l’exil, ceux que Nébucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, avait emmenés captifs, et qui retournèrent à Jérusalem et en Juda, chacun dans sa ville.

Néhémie dressa à son tour la liste de ceux qui étaient revenus les premiers à Jérusalem, avec Zorobabel, en 538 av. J.-C. . Les légères différences peuvent s’expliquer par le fait qu’Esdras avait nommé ceux qui avaient l’intention de partir, tandis que Néhémie citait ceux qui étaient effectivement arrivés. D’autres explications sont aussi possibles.

70 Plusieurs des chefs de famille firent des dons pour l’œuvre. Le gouverneur donna au trésor mille dariques d’or, cinquante coupes, cinq cent trente tuniques sacerdotales.

Le septième mois. C’est-à-dire le mois de Tisri (septembre/octobre), en 445 av. J.-C., moins d’une semaine après l’achèvement de la muraille (cf. #Né 6:15). La fête des tabernacles commençait généralement le quinzième jour du mois (cf. #Né 6:14 avec #Lé 23:33-44), mais ici elle commença le deuxième (cf. #Né 8:13), et toute la nation y fut invitée. En général, la fête des trompettes se célébrait le premier jour du mois (cf. #Lé 23:23-25).

1 ¶ And when the wall was rebuilt, and I set the doors of the gate, the doorkeepers, the singers, and the Levites were appointed.
2 And I gave my orders unto Hanani my brother, and to Hananiah, the captain of the citadel of Jerusalem, a man superior to many by his faithfulness and his fear of God.

3 And I said unto them, The gates of Jerusalem shall not be opened till the heat of the sun shall come, and the shutters shall be shut in thy presence; The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall keep watch, each one at his post in front of his house.
In the ancient Near East, the gates of the city were generally opened at dawn, and they were closed at the setting sun. Nehemiah gave different orders, considering the hostile attitude of the neighbors: the doors should not be opened before everyone was standing and active; When they were closed, sentinels were to stand guard over the watchtowers, and each one before his own house (see Bishop 7: 4).
4 The city was spacious and large, but sparsely populated, and the houses were not built.
5 ¶ My God put me in the midst of gathering the great men, the rulers, and the people, to number them. I found a genealogical register of those who had first ascended, and I saw therein written the following.
My God put me in my heart. Throughout the book, Nehemiah affirmed that God was at work in all circumstances (see # 2: 8, # 2:18; # 6:16).
7: 5b-6
I found a register. Nehemiah discovered a register established by Ezra in Babylon before the departure of the first group of exiles. It was the list of people who had returned to Jerusalem under the leadership of Zorobabel.
6 These were the men of the province who returned from exile, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive, and returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each one in his own city.

66 The whole congregation was forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty persons,
67 without counting their servants and maidservants, numbering seven thousand three hundred and thirty-seven. Among them were two hundred and forty-five singers and singers.

The seventh month. That is to say, the month of Tisri (September / October), in 445 BC. Less than a week after the completion of the wall (cf. Born 6:15). The Feast of Tabernacles usually began on the fifteenth day of the month (cf # # 6:14 with # Leah 23: 33-44), but here it began the second (cf # Bb 8:13), and the whole nation Was invited. In general, the feast of trumpets was celebrated on the first day of the month (cf # Le 23: 23-25).
