1 ¶ Koré, fils de Jitsehar, fils de Kehath, fils de Lévi, se révolta avec Dathan et Abiram, fils d’Eliab, et On, fils de Péleth, tous trois fils de Ruben.
Koré. Lévite de la famille de Kehath. En tant que Kehathite, il était déjà chargé de tâches d’une certaine importance dans le tabernacle (voir #No 4:1-20). Il aspirait cependant à la fonction de sacrificateur (voir v. 10).
16:1-18:32 en #No 16:1-40, Koré (un Lévite), soutenu par certains membres de Ruben et d’autres chefs d’Israël, s’opposa à l’autorité d’Aaron et des sacrificateurs. Leur argument contre Moïse et Aaron était que, s’arrogeant le droit et la responsabilité exclusive de représenter le peuple devant Dieu, ces derniers avaient exagéré. Leur argumentation se fondait sur une promesse de sainteté de toute l’assemblée et de présence de l’Éternel au milieu d’elle (#No 16: 3). Dieu s’occupa de ces rebelles (#No 16:4-40) et confirma son choix d’Aaron (#No 16:41-17:13). Puis il réaffirma les devoirs et droits des sacrificateurs et des Lévites (#No 18:1-32). L’endroit précis où se déroulèrent ces événements n’est pas mentionné.
2 Ils se soulevèrent contre Moïse, avec deux cent cinquante hommes des enfants d’Israël, des principaux de l’assemblée, de ceux que l’on convoquait à l’assemblée, et qui étaient des gens de renom.
3 Ils s’assemblèrent contre Moïse et Aaron, et leur dirent : C’en est assez ! car toute l’assemblée, tous sont saints, et l’Éternel est au milieu d’eux. Pourquoi vous élevez-vous au-dessus de l’assemblée de l’Éternel ?
4 Quand Moïse eut entendu cela, il tomba sur son visage.
5 Il parla à Koré et à toute sa troupe, en disant : Demain, l’Éternel fera connaître qui est à lui et qui est saint, et il le fera approcher de lui ; il fera approcher de lui celui qu’il choisira.
6 Faites ceci. Prenez des brasiers, Koré et toute sa troupe.
7 Demain, mettez-y du feu, et posez-y du parfum devant l’Éternel ; celui que l’Éternel choisira, c’est celui-là qui sera saint. C’en est assez, enfants de Levi !
8 Moïse dit à Koré : Écoutez donc, enfants de Lévi:
enfants de Lévi. Il y avait d’autres Lévites impliqués dans cette rébellion.
9 Est-ce trop peu pour vous que le Dieu d’Israël vous ait choisis dans l’assemblée d’Israël, en vous faisant approcher de lui, afin que vous soyez employés au service du tabernacle de l’Éternel, et que vous vous présentiez devant l’assemblée pour la servir ?
10 Il vous a fait approcher de lui, toi, et tous tes frères, les enfants de Lévi, et vous voulez encore le sacerdoce !
11 C’est à cause de cela que toi et toute ta troupe, vous vous assemblez contre l’Éternel ! car qui est Aaron, pour que vous murmuriez contre lui ?
12 ¶ Moïse envoya appeler Dathan et Abiram, fils d’Eliab. Mais ils dirent : Nous ne monterons pas.
Dathan et Abiram. Ces deux hommes de la tribu de Ruben méprisaient Moïse, lui reprochant d’avoir fait sortir Israël d’Égypte sans réussir à le conduire jusqu’en Canaan. À cause du prétendu échec de Moïse, ils se joignirent à la rébellion de Koré.
13 N’est-ce pas assez que tu nous aies fait sortir d’un pays où coulent le lait et le miel pour nous faire mourir au désert, sans que tu continues à dominer sur nous ?
14 Et ce n’est pas dans un pays où coulent le lait et le miel que tu nous as menés, ce ne sont pas des champs et des vignes que tu nous as donnés en possession. Penses-tu crever les yeux de ces gens ? Nous ne monterons pas.
15 Moïse fut très irrité, et il dit à l’Éternel : N’aie point égard à leur offrande. Je ne leur ai pas même pris un âne, et je n’ai fait de mal à aucun d’eux.
je n’ai fait de mal à aucun d’eux. Le fait que Moïse plaida son innocence devant l’Éternel, déclarant avoir été un serviteur et un chef fidèle, confirme que 12:3 a pu être écrit par lui.
16 Moïse dit à Koré : Toi et toute ta troupe, trouvez-vous demain devant l’Éternel, toi et eux, avec Aaron.
16:16-35 Dieu jugea les rebelles en les mettant à mort.
17 Prenez chacun votre brasier, mettez-y du parfum, et présentez devant l’Éternel chacun votre brasier : il y aura deux cent cinquante brasiers ; toi et Aaron, vous prendrez aussi chacun votre brasier.
18 Ils prirent chacun leur brasier, y mirent du feu et y posèrent du parfum, et ils se tinrent à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation, avec Moïse et Aaron.
19 Et Koré convoqua toute l’assemblée contre Moïse et Aaron, à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation. Alors la gloire de l’Éternel apparut à toute l’assemblée.
20 Et l’Éternel parla à Moïse et à Aaron, et dit:
21 Séparez-vous du milieu de cette assemblée, et je les consumerai en un seul instant.
L’Éternel répondit à l’intercession de Moïse en demandant au peuple de s’éloigner des tentes des rebelles pour qu’eux seuls soient jugés.
22 Ils tombèrent sur leur visage, et dirent : O Dieu, Dieu des esprits de toute chair ! un seul homme a péché, et tu t’irriterais contre toute l’assemblée ?
Dieu des esprits de toute chair. Cette expression n’apparaît qu’ici et en #No 27:16. Moïse demanda instamment au Dieu omniscient, qui connaît le cœur de chacun, de juger ceux qui avaient péché, et eux seuls.
23 ¶ L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:
24 Parle à l’assemblée, et dis : Retirez-vous de toutes parts loin de la demeure de Koré, de Dathan et d’Abiram.
25 Moïse se leva, et alla vers Dathan et Abiram ; et les anciens d’Israël le suivirent.
26 Il parla à l’assemblée, et dit: Éloignez-vous des tentes de ces méchants hommes, et ne touchez à rien de ce qui leur appartient, de peur que vous ne périssiez en même temps qu’ils seront punis pour tous leurs péchés.
27 Ils se retirèrent de toutes parts loin de la demeure de Koré, de Dathan et d’Abiram. Dathan et Abiram sortirent, et se tinrent à l’entrée de leurs tentes, avec leurs femmes, leurs fils et leurs petits-enfants.
28 Moïse dit : A ceci vous connaîtrez que l’Éternel m’a envoyé pour faire toutes ces choses, et que je n’agis pas de moi-même.
29 Si ces gens meurent comme tous les hommes meurent, s’ils subissent le sort commun à tous les hommes, ce n’est pas l’Éternel qui m’a envoyé ;
30 mais si l’Éternel fait une chose inouïe, si la terre ouvre sa bouche pour les engloutir avec tout ce qui leur appartient, et qu’ils descendent vivants dans le séjour des morts, vous saurez alors que ces gens ont méprisé l’Éternel.
une chose inouïe. Cette ouverture surnaturelle de la terre pour engloutir les rebelles était un signe de la colère de Dieu et de la légitimité de Moïse et d’Aaron.
31 Comme il achevait de prononcer toutes ces paroles, la terre qui était sous eux se fendit.
32 La terre ouvrit sa bouche, et les engloutit, eux et leurs maisons, avec tous les gens de Koré et tous leurs biens.
leurs Maisons. #No 26:11 précise que leurs enfants furent épargnés.
33 Ils descendirent vivants dans le séjour des morts, eux et tout ce qui leur appartenait ; la terre les recouvrit, et ils disparurent au milieu de l’assemblée.
34 Tout Israël, qui était autour d’eux, s’enfuit à leur cri ; car ils disaient : Fuyons, de peur que la terre ne nous engloutisse !
35 ¶ Un feu sortit d’auprès de l’Éternel, et consuma les deux cent cinquante hommes qui offraient le parfum.
36 L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:
37 Dis à Eléazar, fils du sacrificateur Aaron, de retirer de l’incendie les brasiers et d’en répandre au loin le feu, car ils sont sanctifiés.
38 Avec les brasiers de ces gens qui ont péché au péril de leur vie, que l’on fasse des lames étendues dont on couvrira l’autel. Puisqu’ils ont été présentés devant l’Éternel et qu’ils sont sanctifiés, ils serviront de souvenir aux enfants d’Israël.
39 Le sacrificateur Eléazar prit les brasiers d’airain qu’avaient présentés les victimes de l’incendie, et il en fit des lames pour couvrir l’autel.
40 C’est un souvenir pour les enfants d’Israël, afin qu’aucun étranger à la race d’Aaron ne s’approche pour offrir du parfum devant l’Éternel et ne soit comme Koré et comme sa troupe, selon ce que l’Éternel avait déclaré par Moïse.
16:36-40 Les 250 chefs d’Israël avaient amené des brasiers remplis de feu devant l’Éternel (vv. #No 16:17-18). Ces brasiers étaient saints, puisqu’ils avaient été utilisés dans le tabernacle. Par conséquent, Eléazar reçut l’ordre de les façonner de manière à recouvrir l’autel et à rappeler à tous que Dieu avait choisi Aaron et ses descendants pour le sacerdoce.
41 ¶ Dès le lendemain, toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël murmura contre Moïse et Aaron, en disant : Vous avez fait mourir le peuple de l’Éternel.
16:41-50 Au lieu d’amener le peuple à la repentance, la colère de l’Éternel ne fit que susciter de nouvelles plaintes. Les Israélites tenaient Moïse et Aaron pour responsables des nombreuses morts, alors que leur intervention avait plutôt sauvé l’ensemble du peuple de la destruction.
42 Comme l’assemblée se formait contre Moïse et Aaron, et comme ils tournaient les regards vers la tente d’assignation, voici, la nuée la couvrit, et la gloire de l’Éternel apparut.
43 Moïse et Aaron arrivèrent devant la tente d’assignation.
44 Et l’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit:
45 Retirez-vous du milieu de cette assemblée, et je les consumerai en un instant. Ils tombèrent sur leur visage ;
46 et Moïse dit à Aaron : Prends le brasier, mets-y du feu de dessus l’autel, poses-y du parfum, va promptement vers l’assemblée, et fais pour eux l’expiation ; car la colère de l’Éternel a éclaté, la plaie a commencé.
parfum. C’était un symbole de la prière. Aaron intercéda dans la prière, et la plaie s’arrêta (v. #No 16: 48).
47 Aaron prit le brasier, comme Moïse avait dit, et courut au milieu de l’assemblée ; et voici, la plaie avait commencé parmi le peuple. Il offrit le parfum, et il fit l’expiation pour le peuple.
48 Il se plaça entre les morts et les vivants, et la plaie fut arrêtée.
49 Il y eut quatorze mille sept cents personnes qui moururent de cette plaie, outre ceux qui étaient morts à cause de Koré.

50 Aaron retourna auprès de Moïse, à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation. La plaie était arrêtée.

¶ 1 Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the son of Eliab, and On, son of Peleth, son of Reuben.
Korah. Levite of the family of Kohath. As Kehathite, he was already in charge of tasks of some importance in the tabernacle (see #No 4: 1-20). However priest aspired to function (see v. 10).
16: 1-18: 32 #No 16: 1-40, Korah (a Levite), supported by some members of Ruben and other leaders of Israel, opposed the authority of Aaron and the priests . Their argument against Moses and Aaron was that, assuming the right and sole responsibility to represent the people before God, they had exaggerated. Their argument was based on a holy promise of all the assembly and presence of the Lord in her midst (#No 16: 3). God took care of these rebels (#No 16: 4-40) and confirmed its choice of Aaron (#No 16: 41-17: 13). Then he reaffirmed the duties and rights of the priests and Levites (#No 18: 1-32). The exact place where these events unfolded was not mentioned.
2 And they rose up against Moses, with two hundred and fifty men of the children of Israel, the leaders of the community, of those we in the congregation, who were men of renown.
3 They assembled against Moses and Aaron, and said unto them, It is enough; seeing all the congregation are holy, every, and the Lord is among them. Why you exalt yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?
4 When Moses heard it, he fell on his face.
5 he spoke to Korah and all his company, saying, Tomorrow the LORD will show who is his and who is holy, and it will approach him; he will approach him one he will choose.
6 Do this. Take censers, Korah, and all his company.
7 Tomorrow put fire therein, and put incense in them before the LORD; whom the Lord chooses is the one who is holy. Enough, children Levi!
8 Moses said to Korah, Hear now, ye sons of Levi:
Levites. There were other Levites involved in this rebellion.
9 Is it too little for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near him, so you do the service of the tabernacle of the Lord and you stand before the congregation to serve?
10 He made you approach him, thou, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi, and ye the priesthood!
11 It is because of this that you and all your company are gathered together against the Lord! what is Aaron, that you murmur against him?
12 ¶ And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the son of Eliab. But they said, We will not come.
Dathan and Abiram. These two men of the tribe of Reuben despised Moses, reproaching him for having brought Israel out of Egypt but failed to drive it until Canaan. Because the alleged failure of Moses, they joined the rebellion of Korah.
13 Is it not enough that you have brought us out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself prince over us?
14 And it is not in a land flowing with milk and honey thou hast done, these are not fields and vineyards that you have given us in possession. Do you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come.
15 Moses was very angry, and said to the Lord: Respect not thou their offering. I do not have them taken one ass, and I have done wrong to any of them.
I did not hurt any of them. The fact that Moses pleaded his innocence before the Lord, saying he was a servant and a faithful leader, confirms that 12: 3 has been written by him.
16 Moses said to Korah, You and all your company find yourself before the Lord tomorrow, you and they, and Aaron.
16: 16-35 God judged the rebels by putting them to death.
17 And take every man his censer, put incense in them, and present before Jehovah every man his censer: there will be two hundred and fifty censers; you and Aaron, each of you will also censer.
18 They each took his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.
19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. And the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation.
20 And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
21 Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.
And he said to the intercession of Moses asking the people to move away from the tents of the rebels only they are tried.
22 They fell on their faces and said, O God, God of the spirits of all flesh! one man has sinned, and thou be angry against you all the congregation?
God of the spirits of all flesh. This expression appears here and #No 27:16. Moses earnestly asked the omniscient God, who knows everyone's heart, to judge those who had sinned, and only them.
¶ 23 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
24 Speak to the congregation, saying: Withdraw from all sides away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.
25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.
26 He spoke to the congregation, saying, Get away from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing that belongs to them, lest you perish while they will be punished for their sins .
27 They withdrew from all sides away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrance of their tents, with their wives, their son and their grandchildren.
28 And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these things, and I have not done them of myself.
29 If these people die as all men die if they suffer the fate common to all men, it is not the Lord who sent me;
30 But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth and swallow them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, then you will know that these men have provoked the Lord .
a new thing. This supernatural opening of the earth to swallow the rebels was a sign of God's wrath and legitimacy of Moses and Aaron.
31 As he finished speaking all these words, the ground under them split apart.
32 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their houses, and all the people of Korah and all their goods.
Their houses. #no 26:11 states that their children were spared.
33 They went down alive into Sheol, they and all that belonged to them; the earth covered them and they perished from among the assembly.
34 All Israel that were around them fled at their cry; for they said, Lest the earth swallow us!
35 ¶ A fire went out from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.
36 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
37 Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, to remove the censers from the fire and scatter off the fire, for they are hallowed.
38 With the censers of these men who have sinned at the peril of their lives, we make extensive blades whose altar we cover. Since they were presented before the LORD and they are sanctified, they will remember the children of Israel.
39 And Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers which had been presented to the victims of the fire, and he made blades to cover the altar.
40 It is a memorial for the children of Israel, that no stranger to the seed of Aaron, come near to offer incense before the Lord and be not as Korah, and as his company; as the Lord had said through Moses.
16: 36-40 The 250 leaders of Israel had brought censers filled with fire before the Lord (vv #No. 16: 17-18). These fires were holy because they were used in the tabernacle. Therefore, Eleazar was ordered to shape so as to cover the altar and to remind everyone that God chose Aaron and his descendants for the priesthood.
41 ¶ The next day all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying: You have killed the people of Jehovah.
16: 41-50 Instead of bringing the people to repentance, anger of the LORD did no more than create new complaints. The Israelites Moses and Aaron held responsible for numerous deaths, so that their intervention had instead saved all the people from destruction.
42 As the meeting was forming against Moses and Aaron, that they looked toward the tent of meeting, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.
43 Moses and Aaron came before the tabernacle of the congregation.
44 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
45 Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. They fell on their faces;
46 And Moses said to Aaron, Take the censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, poses on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them; for the wrath of the LORD broke out, the wound began.
perfume. It was a symbol of prayer. Aaron interceded in prayer, and the plague was stayed (v #No. 16: 48).
47 Aaron took as Moses had said, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and behold, the plague had begun among the people. He put on incense, and made atonement for the people.
48 And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stayed.
49 There were fourteen thousand seven hundred people died in the plague, in addition to those who died because of Korah.

50 Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting. The plague was stayed.
