1 ¶ (3-1) Psaume de David. À l’occasion de sa fuite devant Absalom, son fils. (3-2) O Éternel, que mes ennemis sont nombreux ! Quelle multitude se lève contre moi !
C’est le premier des 73 psaumes qu’un intitulé hébreu attribue à David. Les autres informations données le rattachent à l’épisode de la révolte d’Absalom (#2S 15:1-18: 2), même si, par bien des traits, il concerne plutôt la persécution en général.
3:1-9
Ce psaume mêle les lamentations et les expressions de confiance. Dans un sens général, il offre un modèle de louange, de paix et de prière face aux pressions. David expose trois phénomènes historiques liés entre eux pour communiquer le « secret théologique » qui lui permit de démontrer tant de confiance dans l’adversité.

2 (3-3) Combien qui disent à mon sujet: Plus de salut pour lui auprès de Dieu ! — Pause.
3:3-4
Plus de salut … Mais toi … mon bouclier. Il y a un grand contraste entre les constats du psalmiste et son assurance. L’attitude et la perspective de David incarnent la théologie que Paul résumera en #Ro 8:31. Le #Ps 3 adopte en outre le langage du divin guerrier (cf. #Ex 15 comme arrière-plan).
3 (3-4) Mais toi, ô Éternel ! tu es mon bouclier, Tu es ma gloire, et tu relèves ma tête.
4 ¶ (3-5) De ma voix je crie à l’Éternel, Et il me répond de sa montagne sainte. Pause.
5 (3-6) Je me couche, et je m’endors ; Je me réveille, car l’Éternel est mon soutien.
Je me couche, et je m’endors. Si David pouvait se reposer même au milieu des circonstances les plus éprouvantes, c’était parce qu’il connaissait la protection et le soutien accordés par Dieu à ceux qui lui font confiance.
6 (3-7) Je ne crains pas les myriades de peuples Qui m’assiègent de toutes parts.
7 (3-8) Lève-toi, Éternel ! sauve-moi, mon Dieu ! Car tu frappes à la joue tous mes ennemis, Tu brises les dents des méchants.
Lève-toi, Éternel! C’est le cri de guerre poussé pour inviter Dieu à attaquer l’ennemi et défendre ses soldats (cf. #Ps 68:2 ; #No 10:35).
8 (3-9) Le salut est auprès de l’Éternel : Que ta bénédiction soit sur ton peuple ! — Pause.
Le salut est auprès de l’Éternel. Il s’agit d’une délivrance exhaustive, globale, valable sur le plan temporel autant qu’éternel.

1 ¶ (3-1) Psalm of David. On the occasion of his flight to Absalom, his son. (3-2) O Lord, let my enemies be many. What a multitude is rising against me!
This is the first of the 73 psalms attributed to David by a Hebrew title. The other information given relates it to the episode of the Absalom revolt (# 2S 15: 1-18: 2), although in many ways it relates to persecution in general.
3: 1-9
This psalm mixes lamentations and expressions of confidence. In a general sense, it offers a model of praise, peace and prayer in the face of pressures. David exposes three interrelated historical phenomena to communicate the "theological secret" that allowed him to demonstrate so much confidence in adversity.

2 (3: 3) How many that say to me, No more salvation for him with God! - Pause.
3: 3-4
No more salvation ... But you ... my shield. There is a great contrast between the statements of the psalmist and his assurance. David's attitude and perspective embody the theology that Paul will summarize in #Ro 8:31. The #Ps 3 also adopts the language of the divine warrior (see #Ex 15 as background).
3 (3-4) But thou, O Jehovah! Thou art my shield, Thou art my glory, and thou raiseest my head.
4 ¶ (3-5) With my voice I cried unto the LORD, and he answered me out of his holy mountain. Pause.
5 (3-6) I lie down and fall asleep; I awake, for the LORD is my support.
I go to bed and fall asleep. If David could rest even in the most trying circumstances, it was because he knew God's protection and support for those who trusted him.
6 (3-7) I fear not the myriads of peoples that besiege me on every side.
7 (3-8) Arise, O LORD! Save me, my God! For you smite all my enemies on the cheek, and break the teeth of the wicked.
Arise, O LORD! This is the cry of war pushed to invite God to attack the enemy and defend his soldiers (see #Ps 68: 2; #No 10:35).
8 (3-9) Salvation is with Jehovah: Let thy blessing be upon thy people. - Pause.
Salvation is with the LORD. It is an exhaustive, global delivery, valid on the temporal as well as the eternal level.
