1 ¶ Non pas à nous, Éternel, non pas à nous, Mais à ton nom donne gloire, À cause de ta bonté, à cause de ta fidélité !
115:1-18
Ce psaume de louange semble avoir été conçu pour une exécution antiphonée (avec des répons), car il suit le schéma et la structure suivants:
1° le peuple (vv. #Ps 115:1-8);
2° les sacrificateurs (vv. #Ps 115:9-11);
3° le peuple (vv. #Ps 115:12-13);
4° les sacrificateurs (vv. #Ps 115:14-15);
5° le peuple (vv. #Ps 115:16-18).
Les vv. #Ps 115:4-11 sont très similaires à 135:15-20. On estime généralement que ce psaume a été composé après l’exil (cf. v. #Ps 115:2), et il est possible qu’il ait été chanté lors de la dédicace du deuxième temple (cf. #Esd 6:16).
à ton nom donne gloire. Dieu a déclaré qu’il ne partagerait sa gloire avec personne (#Esa 42:8 ; #Esa 48:11).
2 Pourquoi les nations diraient-elles : Où donc est leur Dieu ?
Où donc est leur Dieu? Cf. #Ps 42:4, #Ps 42:11 ; #Ps 79:10 ; #Joe 2:17 ; #Mi 7:10. Les Juifs n’avaient que mépris pour cette raillerie, fréquente chez les païens.
3 Notre Dieu est au ciel, Il fait tout ce qu’il veut.
Le Dieu d’Israël est vivant et, de son trône élevé dans les cieux, il gouverne la terre.
4 Leurs idoles sont de l’argent et de l’or, Elles sont l’ouvrage de la main des hommes.
115:4-8
Par opposition au Dieu d’Israël, les païens adorent des dieux morts qu’ils ont inventés, façonnés à l’image de créatures déchues (cf. #Esa 44:9-20 ; #Esa 46:5-7 ; #Jér 10:3-16 ; #Ro 1:21-25). L’adorateur d’une idole devient comme son idole: spirituellement sans consistance.
5 Elles ont une bouche et ne parlent point, Elles ont des yeux et ne voient point,
6 Elles ont des oreilles et n’entendent point, Elles ont un nez et ne sentent point,
7 Elles ont des mains et ne touchent point, Des pieds et ne marchent point, Elles ne produisent aucun son dans leur gosier.
8 Ils leur ressemblent, ceux qui les fabriquent, Tous ceux qui se confient en elles.
9 ¶ Israël, confie-toi en l’Éternel ! Il est leur secours et leur bouclier.
115:9-11
Cette admonestation des sacrificateurs en trois vv. (cf. #Ps 118:2-4 ; #Ps 135:19-20) est adressée à trois groupes différents:
1° la nation d’Israël (v. #Ps 115:9);
2° les sacrificateurs lévitiques de la famille d’Aaron (v. #Ps 115:10);
3° les païens convertis au judaïsme (v. #Ps 115:11).
Pour ces trois groupes, Dieu est un « secours » et un « bouclier ».
10 Maison d’Aaron, confie-toi en l’Éternel ! Il est leur secours et leur bouclier.
11 Vous qui craignez l’Éternel, confiez-vous en l’Éternel ! Il est leur secours et leur bouclier.
12 L’Éternel se souvient de nous : il bénira, Il bénira la maison d’Israël, Il bénira la maison d’Aaron,
13 Il bénira ceux qui craignent l’Éternel, les petits et les grands ;
14 L’Éternel vous multipliera ses faveurs, A vous et à vos enfants.
15 Soyez bénis par l’Éternel, Qui a fait les cieux et la terre !
16 Les cieux sont les cieux de l’Éternel, Mais il a donné la terre aux fils de l’homme.
la terre. Cette affirmation implique que seule la planète terre abrite la vie.
17 Ce ne sont pas les morts qui célèbrent l’Éternel, Ce n’est aucun de ceux qui descendent dans le lieu du silence ;
18 Mais nous, nous bénirons l’Éternel, Dès maintenant et à jamais. Louez l’Éternel !
PSALMS 115 : 1 to 18 + NOTES TO JOHN MACARTHUR
1 ¶ Not to us, O LORD, not to us; but to thy name give glory, because of thy mercy, because of thy faithfulness.
115: 1-18
This psalm of praise seems to have been designed for an antiphoned performance (with responses) because it follows the following scheme and structure:
1 ° the people (vv. Ps 115: 1-8);
(2) the priests (vv. Ps 115: 9-11);
(3) the people (vv. Ps 115: 12-13);
(4) the priests (vv. 115: 14-15);
(5) the people (vv. 115: 16-18).
The vv. #Ps 115: 4-11 are very similar to 135: 15-20. It is generally believed that this Psalm was composed after exile (see v. # Ps 115: 2), and it is possible that it was sung at the dedication of the second temple (see #Esd 6:16 ).
To your name gives glory. God declared that he would not share His glory with anyone (Ezra 42: 8; #Esa 48:11).
2 Why should the nations say, Where is their God?
Where is their God? Cf. #Ps 42: 4, #Ps 42:11; #Ps 79:10; #Joe 2:17; #Mi 7:10. The Jews had only contempt for this raillery, frequent among the pagans.
3 Our God is in heaven, He does all that He wills.
The God of Israel is alive, and from his throne elevated in heaven he rules the earth.
4 Their idols are silver and gold; they are the work of the hand of men.
115: 4-8
In contrast to the God of Israel, the pagans worship dead gods they have invented, fashioned like fallen creatures (cf. #Esa 44: 9-20; #Esa 46: 5-7; # Jer 10 : 3-16; #Ro 1: 21-25). The worshiper of an idol becomes like his idol: spiritually without consistence.
5 They have a mouth and do not speak, They have eyes and do not see,
6 They have ears and do not hear, They have a nose and do not feel,
7 They have hands and do not touch, feet do not walk, they produce no sound in their throats.
8 They are like them, those who make them, all who trust in them.
9 ¶ Israel, trust in the LORD. He is their help and their shield.
115: 9-11
This admonition of the priests in three vv. (See #Ps 118: 2-4; #Ps 135: 19-20) is addressed to three different groups:
(1) the nation of Israel (v. #Ps 115: 9);
(2) the Levitical priests of the family of Aaron (v. # Ps 115: 10);
(3) the Gentiles converted to Judaism (v. # Ps 115: 11).
For these three groups, God is a "help" and a "shield".
10 House of Aaron, trust in the LORD. He is their help and their shield.
11 You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD. He is their help and their shield.
12 The LORD remembers us: he shall bless, and bless the house of Israel, and bless the house of Aaron,
13 He will bless those who fear the LORD, both small and great;
14 The LORD will multiply his favors to you and to your children.
15 Be blessed by the LORD, who made the heavens and the earth!
16 The heavens are the heavens of the LORD; but he has given the earth to the sons of man.
Earth. This assertion implies that only the planet earth shelters life.
17 It is not the dead who celebrate the Lord, nor any of them that go down into the place of silence;
18 But we will bless the LORD, from now on and for ever. Praise the Lord!
