1 ¶ De David. Je te célèbre de tout mon cœur, Je chante tes louanges en la présence de Dieu.
138:1-8
Les #Ps 138:1-145:2 ont été écrits par David, et ce sont les derniers qui lui soient attribués dans le psautier. Les circonstances de leur rédaction sont inconnues, mais il est possible qu’il les ait composés suite à l’alliance conclue avec lui par Dieu (cf. #2S 7:12-14, #2S 7:16).

en présence de Dieu. Ou « en face des dieux », qui pourrait désigner les rois païens (cf. #Ps 82:1) et/ou les idoles qu’ils vénéraient.
2 Je me prosterne dans ton saint temple, Et je célèbre ton nom, à cause de ta bonté et de ta fidélité, Car ta renommée s’est accrue par l’accomplissement de tes promesses.
saint temple. Désignation du tabernacle, puisque le temple de Salomon n’avait pas encore été construit.
ta renommée s’est accrue … tes promesses. Signifiait probablement que la dernière révélation divine dépassait toute révélation précédente au sujet de Dieu. Cela concorderait avec la prière que David prononça (#2S 7:18-29) après la conclusion de l’alliance (#2S 7:12-14, #2S 7:16).
3 Le jour où je t’ai invoqué, tu m’as exaucé, Tu m’as rassuré, tu as fortifié mon âme.
4 Tous les rois de la terre te loueront, ô Éternel ! En entendant les paroles de ta bouche ;

6 ¶ L’Éternel est élevé : il voit les humbles, Et il reconnaît de loin les orgueilleux.
138:6-7
David se considérait comme « humble » (littéralement « bas ») et désignait ses ennemis comme « orgueilleux » (littéralement « hauts »).
7 Quand je marche au milieu de la détresse, tu me rends la vie, Tu étends ta main sur la colère de mes ennemis, Et ta droite me sauve.
8 L’Éternel agira en ma faveur. Éternel, ta bonté dure toujours, N’abandonne pas les œuvres de tes mains !
agira en ma faveur. Ou « achèvera ce qu’il a commencé pour moi ». Allusion à l’œuvre de Dieu dans la vie de David, en particulier l’alliance davidique (cf. #2S 7:12-14, #2S 7:16).

1 ¶ Of David. I praise thee with all my heart, I sing praises in the presence of God.
138: 1-8
#Ps 138: 1-145: 2 were written by David, and these are the last ones attributed to him in the psalter. The circumstances of their writing are unknown, but it is possible that he composed them after the covenant concluded with him by God (see # 2S 7: 12-14, # 2S 7:16).

In the presence of God. Or "in front of the gods", which could designate the pagan kings (cf #Ps 82: 1) and / or the idols they venerated.
2 I prostrate myself in thy holy temple, and I praise thy name because of thy lovingkindness, and thy faithfulness; for thy fame is increased by the fulfillment of thy promises.
Holy temple. Designation of the tabernacle, since the temple of Solomon had not yet been built.
Your fame has increased ... your promises. Probably meant that the last divine revelation surpassed any previous revelation about God. This would be in keeping with the prayer that David gave (# 2S 7: 18-29) after the conclusion of the covenant (# 2S 7: 12-14, # 2S 7:16).
3 The day that I called upon thee, thou hast heard me; thou hast reassured me, thou hast strengthened my soul.
4 All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O LORD. Hearing the words of thy mouth;
All the kings. In contrast to 2: 1-3, cf. #Ps 68:33; #Ps 72: 11-12; #Ps 96: 1, #Ps 96: 3, #Ps 96: 7-8; #Ps 97: 1; #Ps 98: 4; #Ps 100: 1; #Ps 102: 16; #Ps 148: 11.
5 They shall praise the ways of the LORD, for the glory of the LORD is great.
6 ¶ Jehovah is exalted: he seeth the lowly, and knoweth the proud from afar.
138: 6-7
David considered himself "humble" (literally "low") and pointed to his enemies as "proud" (literally "high").
7 When I walk in the midst of distress, you restore me to life. You stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand saves me.
8 The LORD will act in my favor. O LORD, thy goodness endureth not, forgive not the works of thy hands.
Will act in my favor. Or "will finish what he began for me". Allusion to the work of God in the life of David, especially the Davidic covenant (cf. # 2S 7: 12-14, # 2S 7:16).
