1 ¶ (20-1) Au chef des chantres. Psaume de David. (20-2) Que l’Éternel t’exauce au jour de la détresse, Que le nom du Dieu de Jacob te protège !
20:1-10
Les #Ps 20 et 21 présentent deux événements guerriers: le #Ps 20, une cérémonie avant la bataille, le #Ps 21 la célébration de la victoire après la bataille. Dans le cadre d’un régime théocratique, il s’agissait de guerres saintes dont la chaîne de commandement était la suivante: l’Éternel était le commandant en chef, le roi oint le général (son subordonné), et le peuple les soldats. Toutes les saintes convocations, autant avant qu’après les batailles, donnaient lieu à des prières et des louanges collectives adressées à Dieu, car c’était lui qui offrait la victoire par l’intermédiaire du général-roi. Le #Ps 20, qui anticipe une campagne militaire, commémore une cérémonie en trois étapes, célébrée régulièrement par le peuple en présence du divin commandant en chef au nom du roi-général.

2 (20-3) Que du sanctuaire il t’envoie du secours, Que de Sion il te soutienne !
du sanctuaire … de Sion. Allusion au lieu de la présence symbolique de Dieu: l’arche, récupérée par David et installée dans un tabernacle sur la montagne de Sion. Le souhait du peuple était que le Seigneur lui-même soutienne, épaule et aide son général-roi en lui offrant sa puissante présence tout au long de la campagne militaire.
3 (20-4) Qu’il se souvienne de toutes tes offrandes, Et qu’il agrée tes holocaustes ! — Pause.
4 (20-5) Qu’il te donne ce que ton cœur désire, Et qu’il accomplisse tous tes desseins !
5 (20-6) Nous nous réjouirons de ton salut, Nous lèverons l’étendard au nom de notre Dieu ; L’Éternel exaucera tous tes vœux.
ton salut. Ici, le salut divin correspond à une victoire au combat.
6 ¶ (20-7) Je sais déjà que l’Éternel sauve son oint ; Il l’exaucera des cieux, de sa sainte demeure, Par le secours puissant de sa droite.
7 (20-8) Ceux-ci s’appuient sur leurs chars, ceux-là sur leurs chevaux ; Nous, nous invoquons le nom de l’Éternel, notre Dieu.
Ceux-ci s’appuient. La confiance, la fierté et la louange ne doivent pas se tromper d’objet, mais être placées en Dieu lui-même (cf. p. ex. #Ps 33:16-17 ; #Lé 26:7-8 ; #De 17: 16 ; #De 20:1-4 ; #Esa 31:1-3 ; #Jér 9:23-24 ; #Za 4:6).
8 (20-9) Eux, ils plient, et ils tombent ; Nous, nous tenons ferme, et restons debout.
9 (20-10) Éternel, sauve le roi ! Qu’il nous exauce, quand nous l’invoquons !
Ce v. pourrait aussi être traduit: « Éternel, accorde la victoire au roi! Réponds-nous quand nous t’invoquons! »

1 ¶ (20-1) To the chief singer. Psalm of David. (20-2) Let the LORD answer thee in the day of trouble: let the name of the God of Jacob protect thee.
20: 1-10
#Ps 20 and 21 present two warrior events: #Ps 20, a ceremony before the battle, #Ps 21 celebrating victory after the battle. Within the framework of a theocratic regime, these were holy wars whose chain of command was as follows: the Lord was the commander-in-chief, the king anointed the general (his subordinate), and the people the soldiers. All the holy convocations, both before and after the battles, gave rise to prayers and collective praises addressed to God, for it was he who offered victory through the intermediary of the general-king. #Ps 20, which anticipates a military campaign, commemorates a three-stage ceremony, regularly celebrated by the people in the presence of the divine Commander-in-Chief in the name of the King-General.

2 (20-3) May he send you help from the sanctuary, and support you from Zion!
The sanctuary ... of Zion. Allusion instead of the symbolic presence of God: the ark, recovered by David and installed in a tabernacle on Mount Zion. The wish of the people was that the Lord himself should support, shoulder and help his general-king by offering him his powerful presence throughout the military campaign.
3 (20-4) Let him remember all your offerings, and accept your burnt offerings. - Pause.
4 (20-5) Let him give you what your heart desires, and fulfill all your purposes.
5 (20-6) We will rejoice in your salvation, We will raise the standard in the name of our God; The LORD will hear all your vows.
Your salvation. Here, divine salvation corresponds to a victory in combat.
6 ¶ (20-7) I know that the LORD saves his anointed; He will hear him from the heavens, from his holy dwelling, by the powerful help of his right hand.
7 (20-8) These rely on their chariots, those on their horses; We call upon the name of the LORD our God.
These are supported. Confidence, pride and praise must not be deceived, but be placed in God Himself (see, for example, #Ps 33: 16-17; # Le 26: 7-8; 17: 16, # 20: 1-4, #Esa 31: 1-3, # Jer 9: 23-24, #Za 4: 6).
8 (20-9) They fold, and they fall; We stand firm and remain standing.
9 (20-10) LORD, save the king! Let him hear us, when we call upon him!
This v. Could also be translated: "Lord, grant victory to the king! Answer us when we call! "
