1 ¶ Psaume d’Asaph. Dieu se tient dans l’assemblée de Dieu ; Il juge au milieu des dieux.
82:1-8
Ce psaume, comme les #Ps 2 et 58, porte essentiellement sur les injustices des tyrans. Le psalmiste présente Dieu comme se tenant dans l’assemblée des dirigeants terrestres, à qui il a délégué son autorité, et condamnant leur injustice. Finalement (v. #Ps 82:8), il prie que Dieu lui-même prenne le contrôle direct des affaires du monde.

il juge au milieu des dieux. Certains ont interprété ce psaume comme évoquant les démons et les faux dieux du paganisme. Il vaut mieux comprendre que ces « dieux » sont les autorités humaines, qu’il s’agisse de juges, de rois, de législateurs ou de présidents (cf. #Ex 22:8-9, #Ex 22: 28 ; #Jug 5:8-9). Dieu est le grand juge au-dessus d’eux tous.
2 Jusques à quand jugerez-vous avec iniquité, Et aurez-vous égard à la personne des méchants ? Pause.
jugerez-vous avec iniquité. Dieu accuse les juges humains d’injustices sociales, perpétrées en violation de la loi mosaïque (p. ex. #De 24).
3 Rendez justice au faible et à l’orphelin, Faites droit au malheureux et au pauvre,
4 Sauvez le misérable et l’indigent, Délivrez-les de la main des méchants.

6 ¶ J’avais dit : Vous êtes des dieux, Vous êtes tous des fils du Très-Haut.
J’avais dit. Les rois et juges sont établis, en fin de compte, par décret divin (#Ps 2:6). Dieu investit les chefs humains de son autorité pour qu’ils assurent en son nom la stabilité du monde (cf. #Ro 13:1-7), mais il peut aussi la leur retirer (v. #Ps 82:7).
Vous êtes des dieux. Jésus cite cette phrase en #Jn 10:34, d’une manière qui appuie l’identification de ces « dieux » à des êtres humains. Dans un jeu de mots, il affirme que, si les chefs humains peuvent être appelés « dieux », le Messie peut d’autant plus être appelé « Dieu ».
des fils du Très-Haut. C’est-à-dire des êtres créés par Dieu pour une vie noble.
7 Cependant vous mourrez comme des hommes, Vous tomberez comme un prince quelconque.
mourrez comme des hommes. Bien qu’ils aient été créés à l’image de Dieu, ces hommes restaient des mortels, et ils connaîtraient la mort comme tous les autres.
tomberez comme un prince. Les dirigeants injustes s’exposaient à connaître une mort violente, puisque c’était le sort fréquent des tyrans.
8 Lève-toi, ô Dieu, juge la terre ! Car toutes les nations t’appartiennent.
toutes les nations t’appartiennent. Le psalmiste anticipa, dans sa prière, le moment où Dieu instaurerait son royaume et ferait revenir l’ordre et une justice parfaite dans un monde courbé sous la malédiction du péché.

1 ¶ Psalm of Asaph. God stands in the assembly of God; He judges in the midst of the gods.
82: 1-8
This psalm, like #Ps 2 and 58, focuses on the injustices of tyrants. The psalmist presents God as standing in the assembly of the earthly rulers, to whom he has delegated his authority, and condemning their injustice. Finally (v. #Ps 82: 8), he prays that God Himself will take direct control of the affairs of the world.

The assembly. The scene opens with God and the assembly of world leaders that he has summoned.
He judges in the midst of the gods. Some have interpreted this psalm as evoking the demons and false gods of paganism. It is better to understand that these "gods" are the human authorities, be they judges, kings, legislators or presidents (cf #Ex 22: 8-9, #Ex 22: 28; #Jug 5: 8-9). God is the great judge above all of them.
2 How long shall ye judge with unrighteousness, and respect the person of the wicked? Pause.
Will you judge with iniquity. God accuses human judges of social injustice, perpetrated in violation of the Mosaic law (eg, # 24).
3 Render justice to the weak and the orphan, do justice to the unfortunate and the poor,
4 Save the wretched and needy, Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.
5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding; they walk in darkness; All the foundations of the earth are shaken.
darkness. Evokes both intellectual ignorance and moral baseness.
The foundations of the earth are shaken. When leaders prove unjust, they undermine the moral order established by God that underlies human existence.
6 ¶ I said, You are gods, you are all sons of the Most High.
I said. Kings and judges are established, ultimately, by divine decree (#Ps 2: 6). God invests the human leaders of His authority to ensure the stability of the world in His name (cf. # 13: 1-7), but he can also withdraw them from them (v. # Ps 82: 7).
You are gods. Jesus quotes this phrase in #Jn 10:34, in a way that supports the identification of these "gods" with human beings. In a play on words, he asserts that if human leaders can be called "gods", the Messiah can all the more be called "God".
Of the sons of the Most High. That is, beings created by God for a noble life.
7 Yet you shall die like men, and fall as a prince.
Die like men. Though they were created in the image of God, these men remained mortals, and they would know death like all others.
Will fall like a prince. The unjust leaders were exposed to a violent death, since it was the common fate of tyrants.
8 Arise, O God, judge the earth. For all nations are yours.
All nations belong to you. The psalmist anticipated in his prayer the moment when God would establish his kingdom and bring order and perfect justice back into a world bent under the curse of sin.
